I have the 9 CD Stax/Volt singles box (all their A sides and others from when they were associated with Atlantic)- the liner notes briefly tell the story and it is an interesting one.. Im horrible with track titles, but I can check and perhaps condense the 9 CDs into one mix for you.. if you want
Thanks for the offer but I'm leaning towards picking up more single artist albums. I actually do own a fair amount of Stax albums including stuff by
William Bell, Isaac Hayes, the Dramatics, Shirley Brown, Booker T & the MG's, the Staple Singers, Otis Redding, the Bar Kays, and Johnny Taylor.
All of the performances on the Wattstax DVD were so good though that I'm sure I'm missing some great ones.
I'm leaning towards the two Mavis Staples solo albums and a Rance Allen as next Stax pickups but I was wondering if anyone recommended something else that I don't own.
There were pretty big feature stories on Stax and Wattstax in the Winter edition of Wax Poetics, and a story in Mojo on Mavis Staples. And I just saw Wattstax so I'm already pretty familiar with the stax story at a high level. I'm just looking to dig deeper. The author of Soulsville, Rob Bowman wrote the liner notes to that Stax box by the way.
