I ask you...

- Do you have little threads constantly hanging from your clothing?
- Do you bite through the hang tags on things you buy?
- Do you clean your fingernails with your keys?
- Do you struggle to open the packaging of everything you buy?

I cannot imagine going through life not being able to quickly and cleanly slice anything at a moment's notice. There is not a day that goes by where I don't use a pocket knife. Not for knife fights or defense or anything goofy like that, just for practical needs. I continually wonder (often aloud) how people get along without one. I cannot count the number of times my wife has said "you have your knife?" and borrowed it for something in the last 4 years. Everytime I fly somewhere, I contsantly miss it.

- Do you struggle to open the packaging of everything you buy? Nope, I have this key chain thing that usually will break tape, and if not I use a kitchen knife.

When I was a liquor store cooler monkey, I used to carry a pocket knife everywhere. Doesn't work so well with the current job.

I keep a utility razor blade or two in my wallet most of the time.

Luckily, I've never had it on me when "Nights In White Satin" polluted my radio.

I wear a folder on the right pocket everywhere except for weddings and interviews with high-ranking school officials. I have one in black for darker outfits and one in silver for everything else.

Edit: But not this weekend's wedding... I might need it.

Two things I was taught by grandfather -
No polite man should be without:
1) a pocket knife
2) a lighter (even if you don't smoke)

I do none of these. I already got enough shit in my pockets.

Forgot I had my Swiss Army knife that I had for over a decade in my bag at the airport. Confiscated at security. Haven't bought a new one yet.

I've thought about carrying a pocket knife but I really don't run into very many situations where I need one.

I do carry a bottle opener and use it frequently. It's on my key chain.

9/11 changed the way I live my life as far as knives go. For years, I carried a semi-large Gerber on my belt at all times. It was always there, and not something I even consciously thought about. After the first 2 post-9/11 trips to the airport, and ensuing hassles, I quit carrying it. Switched off to a small swiss army knife that I remember is with me more easily than the bigger belt knife. Shit in my pocket is very evident to me. But, yeah, I'd never be able to open a new cd in the car right after buyng it without a blade.

These are clipped onto the brim of my pocket, so they don't annoy me by slinging around amongst the pocket proper. They're also not too large, so as not to appear terribly threatening. I did, however, have to hide mine before the Shins show in Milwaukee, which had, for some reason, tighter security than the airport. There's a wall alongside the Rave, and it's just the perfect place to stash stuff. To wit: my knife shared space with about 4 disposable cameras and several flasks, and was still all there afterwards.

I got to a cafe a few hours ago, ordered a pre-made croissanwich, and was *unable* to open the bitch without assistance. It prompted a post.

I have extensible fingernails for that -- can almost always open a new CD, even with freshly clipped nails.

Take that, cats!

i make a note of it and cut it with scissors when home. not like i'm howard hughes anal and it bugs me every second once i know abou tit.

i usually don't wear clothing immediately after i buy it. usually take it home and use a scissors.

i use other fingernails. seems handy and logical.

For the instance where i buy a cd and want to listen to it on the way home, i'll use a fingernail down the "folding slit" of the cd wrapping. A bigger package, like a taped box, i'd use a key.

also have a bottle opener on my keychain, so i'm set. i don't even see the need for an amber alert here.

Here's a CD-opening tip: while you're still in the store just run the right hand end of the CD along the counter's edge at the check-out stand. The plastic wrap slits open perfectly, plus you get to demonstrate in a grand visual style to the retailer that they wrap these fuckers too well.

I have one that I keep in my room...I've used it many times while at home, but never needed it elsewhere...so I never take it with me

plus I would definitely be one of the goofballs who tries to take it on a plane or something

Yup, considering my gum wrapper set off the metal detector in Cinci. *sigh*

I have a small, keychain Swiss Army knife (yeah, the Victronox).
And I often wonder how the hell I got on in the days before I got it.

I use the scissors every day.
I use the knife several times a week.
I even used the tweezers once or twice.
Lost the toothpick and I could care less.

People never really buy these things for girls when you're growing up.

Maybe I'll just have to buy myself one. I think I'd probably end up using it quite a lot.... considering I'm "little miss fix-it".

The other thing I could really use is a mini mag light.
Musicians and DJs should never be without one...and they're cool too.

I bought one of the Swiss Army key chains that Todd was talking about for my ex-girlfriend and she has since replaced it twice. She uses it all the time. They are about $25 and it comes with a small knife, scissors, and a pen on it. I have one also. Extremely handy. I recommend getting one but like was previously mentioned you have to take it off your keychain when going on a plane.

Pocket knives remind me of old men. My dad, who was an old guy, used to use his all the time. I wonder what happened to it.
