I used to listen to Too long in the Wasteland, his first album, but never went further than that. Sometimes I think he's a great songwriter and sometimes his delivery just bores me. Any opinions on his later work?

I agree with your assessment --- I've seen him a few times. Nice music to have a beer, but it does get a little mundane after a while.

I heard a song called, I think, "Dry River" on XM the other day that was achingly beautiful. The type of serious drinking by yourself music that I love.

Any other opinions?

I used to have and love that album way back when it first came out. Not sure why I never picked up any of his other stuff. I sure would enjoy listening to "Talkin' at the Texaco" right about now.

A radio station in Chicago constantly played his song "We Can't Make It Here" which was... not a great song. I've never heard anything else.

He's one of those guys who proves it's not enough to simply be good at what you do, because he's good and I still don't care.

I've liked what I've heard in small doses, but have never pursued any of his catalog because (as mentioned above) it's a little samey/mundane.

*bump*

Jason Isbell's Lightning Rod Records is releasing a couple of his records coming up here at the end of January/beginning of February. "Live in Aught-Three" and "Childish Things". The live record will be a 2LP with cd insert, while "Childish Things" is just on cd.
