I was all excited, seeing reviews about this film/documentary, but 20 minutes in i realised it's just an annoying piece of shit doc about a self-indulgent fag who likes to film himself. It's not art, it's not interesting, and it's not revealing.

I want my hour and 30 minutes back.

I didn't really like it very much either.

I mean, I feel bad for the guy and his mom, but something about that movie just wasn't right. The dude never seemed genuine at all when he was on camera. Also something about playing up all the unfortunate events that have happened to yourself and members of your family so you make a movie and say "Look how fucked up my life is!" just doesn't sit right with me.

that's exactly it. i didn't feel he was genuine at all. it was more of a film saying "look how fucked up and gay i am". yeah, that's great, but you're still not very interesting, and either is your story.

i also think that his mom made up the stories of abuse from his grandmother. after all, she was nuts.

Yes, in this age of Will and Grace and Queer Eye's, people often forget that simple absolute:

Gay does not automatically mean funny or interesting.

Course Dalen, it might help if your posts were clear the first time around instead of peppered with references to "fags and negroes."

You always have a valid point to make, but sometimes you begin by sounding like a lily-white, slighty racist, vaguely homophobic cunt who protects his narrow mindedness by accusing people of having no sense of humor.

There's nothing "brung" about that. That's just lame.

Haven't seen the film though, so maybe it's chock full of fag. ;)

look dude, i honestly don't care how i come off, and my first post was pretty clear. clear enough to be a proper review of the film actually. i'd love for you to watch it sometime and tell me if i'm wrong.

also, i don't think i've ever used the word negro. ever. black guy yes, negro no. i don't tip toe man, and sometimes that might come off racist. truth is, i'll be the first to make fun of anyone and anything [if the Senator doesn't do it first]. if it offends you, that sucks.

i'm hardly racist, but i am outspoken.
:D

Wasn't offended. Have never been offended by anything you've ever posted. I used the word lame, though.

Just sayin' it's often better to let people know you think 50 Cents sucks because he sucks, not because he's a black artist who sucks.

Obviously you've never actually used the word negro, but you have used the word monkey at least five times. I know there are white monkeys the way you use the concept, but that doesn't equal outspoken. It equals dickweed statement.

And you're not really a dickweed, I don't think.

can you say ellen degeneres?

i have not seen tarnation so i can't comment on it specifically but in general i'm pretty bored with the tell-all autobiographies filling the shelves of bookstores today by anyone who was ever spanked by their parents or did a few lines of coke. it's dull self serving crap.

the same is true in documentary films but there are some wonderful exceptions. one of my favorites is nathaniel kahn's documentary my architect about his father louis kahn. in the film he searches to learn more about his father and explores l.k.'s work. it is truly wonderful and never turns sappy or self indulgent.

an aside: yeah, i could do without the self indulgent fag comment but don't kid yourself into thinking that the people on this board who don't use the word fag aren't homophobic. or sexist. or racist. it rears its head in many subtle forms. and i will never claim to be above such behavior myself at times.

Everyone has forms of prejudices. Just some of them are going to get pointed out sometimes more than others.

i'm much more cautious of people who don't even realize they are (fill-in-the-blank)-ist. while i don't like it, at least with a person who is outspoken about their prejudices you know where you stand. of course, it doesn't make it that less scary.

we're humans.
we fuck up.
a lot.
it's really about learning and moving on.

ok, instead of fag should i have used "gay guy" or "homesexual gentleman"?

where is the line between stating the truth about someone and being a homophobe or racist? i think many people are too scared to tell it like it is, and hide it as Ayah stated.

I prefer Slack Jawed Faggot or Kansas City Faggot.

This from a dude who was kissing make friends dead on the mouth last night, just to make them uncomfortable.

Nah, the thread was fine. I was just pointing out that some people are going to THINK you mean more than you mean when you use words like fag and monkey. If that's not an issue that troubles you at all, that's fine.

I know there are plenty of message boards where if your sense of humor ISN'T rooted in inflammatory words and phrases then you're considered a wet blanket twerp. So this board's pretty mild, actually.

Also sometimes, "like it is" is rooted in a straight, white, republican mindset. Hardly "like it is" beyond that mindset.

As long as you don't mind being called crackah ass crackah or straightass hatefucker , no problem with the "like it is" concept.

yes. it's a bit more courteous. less abrasive. not as incendiary. just a suggestion.

gay guy/fag, jewish guy/kike, black guy/nigger....not really telling it like it is. just rude. abrasive. incendiary.

i'd like to teach the world to sing...
