When Tom Jones covers rock songs I believe he actual follows the music to some extent and probably even likes a lot of the artists. Anka, not so much.

I wish people would stop covering this song.

I like the version of Black Hole Sun better.

Yeah, didn't the Mike Flowers Pops do a lounge version ten years ago?

This will always be the best "cover":

Smells Like Nirvana
by Al Yankovic

What is this song all about?
Can't figure any lyrics out
How do the words to it go?
I wish you'd tell me, I don't know
Don't know, don't know, don't know, oh no
Don't know, don't know, don't know...

Now I'm mumblin' and I'm screamin'
And I don't know what I'm singin'
Crank the volume, ears are bleedin'
I still don't know what I'm singin'
We're so loud and incoherent
Boy, this oughta bug your parents
Yeah

It's unintel-ligible
I just can't get it through my skull
It's hard to bargle nawdle zouss
With all these marbles in my mouth
Don't know, don't know, don't know, oh no
Don't know, don't know, don't know...

Well, we don't sound like Madonna
Here we are now, we're Nirvana
Sing distinctly? We don't wanna
Buy our album, we're Nirvana
A garage band from Seattle
Well, it sure beats raising cattle
Yeah

And I forgot the next verse
Oh well, I guess it pays to rehearse
The lyric sheet's so hard to find
What are the words? Oh, nevermind
Don't know, don't know, don't know, oh no
Don't know, don't know, don't know...

Well, I'm yellin' and we're playin'
But I don't know what I'm sayin'
What's the message I'm conveyin'?
Can you tell me what I'm sayin'?
So have you got some idea?
Didn't think so -- Well, I'll see ya
Sayonara, sayonara
Ayonawa, odinawa
Odinaya, yodinaya
Yaddayadda, yaaahyaaah
Ayaaaaaah!

Tori Amos' version of this was decent.

I like the Bad Plus version of this, as well.

I saw Anka perform "Teen Spirit" on Letterman a few days ago and thought it was typical Anka, meaning completely devoid of emotion, melody, and subtlety. If Anka's picture doesn't immediately pop up when you google the word "hack" then something is seriously wrong with this world.

Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme did a big band cover of "Black Hole Sun" and they (arguably) shredded the Soundgarden original, making its bleak emotional center even more overt. Anka should've taken some lessons.

the title of this album is enough for me to not like it. it is an assault on taste.

Yeah, I saw this on Letterman and thought "Tori Amos already did a big genre shift version of this song. And it was better."

There's other songs on the album I'd be more interested to hear but at the end of the day it's still Paul Anka. If I were to go to the trouble of downloading a full covers album, I'd go find the new Richard Cheese.
