Was reading a recent Magnet and which featured a track listing of a mix tape they made:

(1) O homem de gravata florida - Jorge Ben
(2) Pai Grande - Milton Nascimento
(3) Old Europe - Robert Wyatt
(4) I Wonder if I care as Much - The Everly Brothers
(5) The Dolphins - Tim Buckley
(6) Angels of Ashes - Scott Walker
(7) Tanjo Iwai - Yamazaki Hako
(8) Watashi No Hana - Tomokawa Kazuki

Its a very interesting and diverse mix....I don't know the japanese artists and really can't say I'm that familiar with the non-hits of the Everly Brothers but like all the others. The Jorge Ben song is one of my favorites and a billy g mix staple.

They were in Galaxie 500 in the late 80's and apparently make psyche pop/folk music now. Their "The Earth is Blue" album apparently includes covers of songs by George Harrison & Caetano Veloso.

Seems right up my alley. I can't say I've heard any of their post Galaxie 500 work. Anyone familiar with it?

not too far off from Galaxie, though a little more upbeat (the 500 always puts me to sleep). They tend to go for slightly strange tunings. They did some stuff with a Japanese avant/noise artist a few years ago (Ghost? I'm pretty sure that's the name) that's pretty out there. don't have much more than that though.

I have More Sad Hits, D & N with Ghost, and The Earth Is Blue and love all them. Any of them would be a reasonable place to start, I think. The new one (The Earth Is Blue) is a subtle progression musically from previous ones.

The one with Japanese experimental band Ghost is a sonic treasure. Slow-temp psych-folk songs that build momentum with layered textures until they explode with Ghost's electric instruments filling up the soundstage. Particularly impressive on a good stereo.

Doubt many folks here are familiar with Tom Rapp, but D&N are very big fans of his (the influence is readily heard in their music), and were heavily involved in getting him back into the studio a few years ago afer a ~30 year absence.
