Hey can you tell me more about Dreamcatcher. I saw a little blurb in the Books live thread, but I just wanted to know if you had more info. I'm thinking about buying their EP and like the description I have heard pf them so far.

Worst movie I've ever seen... and that includes a few selections of the Lifetime movie-of-the-week variety...

Oh oh oh!!! I fucking love Dreamcatcher. I'm curious about this EP you're talking about because I was just talking to Blake of the band the other night, and as far as I know from what he told me, only a couple cassette releases, and a super-limited live CDR exist. I have one of the cassettes, the one that was released on Pink Triforce tapes, and it's fucking awesome.

This band makes music that I wished to hear for a long time. Noisy, abrasive, chaotic but metrically ordered, even funky and melodic. It can be sexy and agressive, and it can be lazy and standoffish. Dynamic, basically. Every time I've seen them live has been interesting. And they're such a nascent outfit that I anticipate much better things to come in time.

Are you in Quebec? They're playing a loft show in Griffintown in Montreal this Sunday.

Looking more closely, its the cdr. It's available at the Alien8 webstore. Here's the store: http://www.alien8recordings.com/store/

Here is the description that made me curious:
Alien8 Wrote:
Dreamcatcher are a Montreal based duo comprised of Blake Hargreaves and Katherine Kline and together they blend loops with an arsenal of home spun electronics. The band has quickly become one of the crowned jewels of the Montreal experimental/noise scene. Their sound can be most easily described as a gentle Wolf Eyes or a hip hop project obsessed with Throbbing Gristle. Recently the band was invited to perform live on the local university radio station CKUT 90.3 as part of their annual funding drive. The performance was fantastic and the recording of the performance turned out great as well. At this point the band had only issued two limited edition cassettes, so we approached them with the idea of releasing the live performance on cdr in a limited edition of 88 copies. The band were given 25 copies which they managed to sell out during a weekend mini tour with Et Sans, Japanther and USA is a Monster. The remainder will be available via alien8 recordings mail order and can be found at various shops in the Montreal area. This cdr is packaged in our typical cardstock jacket, although slightly thinner than usual. The images are glued on by hand and there is some use of silver spray paint. Overall very diy, but neat. Recommended.

And no, I'm not in Quebec. QC stands for the Queen City (Charlotte, NC) which is where I live.

If they stay true to the "edition of 88", which I think they are, good luck getting your hands on this. Montreal shops are out of it, at least I can't find it. I know that they will be doing some stuff with Alien8 in the future. And their next release will probably be on wax, no more of this cassette shit, the kitsch appeal of which doesn't get me in the slightest. Well, slightly.

Yea I'm gonna order it asap, so maybe I will be able to get my hands on a copy. We'll see. In any case, I'm going to keep my eyes (and ears) open for their stuff to come in the future.

Thanks for your input.

Well I just put in an order for it and the new Kiss Me Deadly ep from the Alien8 store. If you want it, I'd suggest putting in an order. It's $8 CAD plus shipping.

Finally giving it a listen, and damn this shit is good, J. The 4 songs are one long track on my cdr, but I am about 21:00 in and they have settled into a nice groove backbone while fucking shit up on top of it. I'm sure my roommate in the other room is all wtf as to what I am listening to. Can't wait to hear when they release something properly.

Can anybody YSI a Dreamcatcher song?

YSI link PM'd.

Doppleganger thankfully put that up for me. It fucking made my morning. This CD-R is kilometres better than the Pink Triforce tape that I have. The fidelity is obviously way better, but the performance alone is 100% richer, with a speedy version of "Ribbet" towards the piece's end. I love this shit.

"Nimbus" is coming out on CD through www.ohnono.com and LP through www.fluorescentfriends.org shortly.

Thanks!

Well...

It's pretty cool. Most of it reminded me of Excepter, but my favorite part was the Throbbing Gristle beat + jet engine thing.

I'll have to give it more listens to get a better feel for it and decide whether or not I'd want to buy any future releases.

I don't know Excepter nor much about Gristle, admittedly. I'd never insinuate that what Dreamcatcher is doing is breaking ground, but I really like it, and want to understand more and more of where it comes from. Anything you can suggest or pass along, Drinky or other, would be greatly greatly appreciated. This is where my interests lie these days.

Well, sometime later I could send you both Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Exceptor - KA although I wouldn't really push either one as necessarily being better listens than Dreamcatcher. They're just things that I heard first.

Throbbing Gristle is "important" and all, and it's a pretty cool album. But a lot like the Cabaret Voltaire stuff I've heard, it's really repetitive, and some of it hasn't dated too well. It's definitely worth hearing, though, and I'll try to YSI it to you over the weekend if you want.

Excepter is nice, but I generally get kinda bored with it.

I'm currently trying to decide if I like the promo copy I picked up of the new (?) Mouthus album. It has some pretty difficult moments of retarded-Jandek-on-crack guitar, but it's also got a lot of nice, unusual ambient textures. I'll get back to you if I decide it's worth it.

Listening to the new CD "Nimbus" right now for the first time. Also looks like I'm going to be writing some grant applications for Dreamcatcher, and my boss is going to publish them. Their release party is Friday at an awesome loft space. I'm looking forward.

Drinky, I'd be glad to receive anything that you want to send me, be it Gristle or Excepter or Mouthus (who I'm seeing with Lightning Bolt, USAISAMONSTER, Dreamcatcher Goa! ,+++ at a mill in Ontario Labour Day weekend), and would gladly return the favour. Let us share.

I saw Fursaxa, Christina Carter of the Charalambides, and Zaimph at the aforementioned loft this week, and it was wonderful. I could set you up with some Zaimph if you're into it.
