I mean, he's got a style, and it's entertaining but it just drips and reeks and oozes Sublime.
difference is, his voice doesn't suck and his songs aren't as melodically or pop-oriented. i don't think he sounds like sublime at all.
whoa whoa whoa...his voice doesn't suck? i think you're being a bit hard on brad there. the attractive thing about brad's vocal style was its versatility. in that regard, he was very kiedis-ish. he could go from the screaming punk of "hope" to the airy ballad of "rivers of babylon" from one second to the next.
sublime's self titled album was definitely more "pop-oriented" but some of the tracks were still very off the wall, and looking further back into sublime's (admittedly small) catalog, you see a complete disregard for pop sounds.
ah, but much like a. keidis, i think that his voice was really pumped up, tried to make it bigger than it actually was with inflections and filler. the dude could carry a tune, i argue that not. more in that i think that m.'s voice is stronger and carries better.
sublime had some off the wall tunes, sure, but still melody-driven, while i think that more of m.'s songs center around some of his rhymes and the rhythm. imo.
yeah it definitely is more "rhymy and rhythmy" or hip-hoppy or whatever you want to call it. his voice is more of an instrument rather than a lyrical or melodic centerpiece.

i'll agree with that, and that's how it was at first. that's how they hid the fact that anthony's voice really wasn't that good on the first batch of chili pepper's albums and how brad tried to hide that fact. but listen to the chilis nowadays...anthony's voice has come a long way and i'd call him a really good singer now. i think a lot of that has to do with the confidence he gained in his singing by "pumping it up and trying to make it bigger with inflections and filler."
i think that if brad had had the time to grow into his voice like anthony did similar things would have happened.
in that respect, matisyahu is way ahead of both of them.
