Below is what I posted last night on cmj.com when obner was down.

In recent developments, go here to see some pics I took at the show posted on Wilcobase...it's great to see my name online connected with Wilco in some way, even though the pics are nothing special.

Sick.

That's one of the most ridiculous shows of theirs I've ever seen. Jeff was pumped to play in front of the huge crowd at the Merriweather Post Pavilion, home of such Phish giants as 8/8/98.

It was probably a contender for best show I've ever seen them played, and there were major bustouts - i.e. Kamera, Monday, Misunderstood (a personal one for me as I hadn't seen it since my first show.)

As usual, Spiders was a sick closer. Everything was just so intense, so driven and so good. They are playing so fluidly, adding the perfect flourishes to everything and just gelling amazingly.

Not quite as good as 9/22/04 or 10/18/02, but definitely up there. Check these guys out if you haven't yet...fucking sick.

6/26/05 - Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia, MD

Shows began at 8:43pm

I : Handshake Drugs, Company In My Back, ?Airline to Heaven?, Shot In The Arm, I am trying to break your heart, War on War, Hell is Chrome, Hummingbird, At Least That's What You Said, Sunken Treasure, Kamera, Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm Always In Love, Reservations, Spiders

E 1 : Misunderstood, Jesus etc., Kingpin, Late Greats

E 2 : Monday, Outta Site Outta Mind, I'm a Wheel, Something in the Air, I Shall Be Released

I'm only not sure about Airline to Heaven...it was definitely either a Woody, Uncle Tupelo, or new song...but I should really now it anyway.

i had lawn tickets...as soon as i got inside i found two pav seats on the ground and we used those to stub down lots of people...the pav was empty during the roots but filled up by the time wilco got going.

it was one of my best groundscores ever...two free pav seats. we were in row Q, which was very damn close for free.

The Airline To Heaven song is from the second Mermaid Avenue, I believe, and is just about the only song I really dug from that disc. Inexplicably, I am the only person I've talked to who seems to think the first one is pure gold and the second one is forgettable.

I agree. I thought the first one was solid but was never really grabbed by anything in Volume II.

Holy CRAP! This is like discovering you were adopted! Seriously, nobody ever agrees with me on that... (tear rolls down cheek)

I tried for Months to get into that disc, but I couldn't do it.

Glad I can be a comfort. Same for me. I had the first one and loved California Stars and several other songs but when it came to the second one I was like, "this is Wilco so I should love this!" Didn't happen, though. I've been meaning to revisit it for some time but just never got around to it. Given the fact that I always saw it discounted at CD stores and in used bins I figured everyone felt this way.

Hey look, a club is forming.

I think the first one is a gem. I may be terribly wrong, for I don't know the intricate behind the scenes details, but the first seems like the work of Billy Bragg, who is probably more in line with Woody Guthrie and the way his music feels, even when made more modern.

The second sounds like Bennett and Tweedy locked Billy Bragg in a closet while they wanked around with over-instrumentation and create Summerteeth II.

I do like "My Flying Saucer" a whole lot though.

I vote for "terribly wrong." Bragg has a bigger presence on Vol1 than on Vol2, but I don't hear him on a lot Vol1 at all. Puuure Tweedy.

"Remember the Mountain Bed"
"Secrets of the Sea"
"Someday Some Morning Sometime"

Are all great songs off Vol 2 in addition to "Airline to Heaven," regardless if they more or less sound like pure Wilco songs. I tend to not like the Bragg stuff, actually. I find merit in both volumes.

These are the 2 I came to like after choking down about 10 more listens over the years. They are definately ok, but that first volume just kills you from the get-go.

seconded.

Natalie Merchant is vastly overrated, and her continuing indie popularity baffles me. Awful tone of voice, bizarre pronunciations, just awkward.

i';m on the same boat with loving the first and finding the second weak.
