Any fans here?
I've never really thought about giving him a listen, but a review of his new album that i read in this Sunday's Sun-Times piqued my interest.

They described him as "traditional country with elements of honky-tonk and western swing," and stated that he "has never released a bad album."

I wanna know more.
Sounds like good shit!

I'm not familiar with this material, but he's probably the only modern mainstream country artist I'm remotely interested in.

That's a fair description. Some of those traditional takes can sound awfully Nasheville polished, but for the most part he is as described.

Nothing, no one song of his will out do "Amarillo by Morning." I think that's off his debut. Great song that bears all the genuine meaning of what he has been described as all along.

Amarillo by Morning is a great song. Really one of my favorites ever. You've pretty much nailed George Strait correctly. Most of the time the Nashville polish is too much for me but he has some serious gems.

Seeing him live is like watching paint dry.

Strait went to the same college as me (though many years earlier), and actually lived in my hometown for quite some time. In fact, his daughter died in a car owned by a childhood friend of mine, though he wasn't driving (he was in the back seat, I think). Sad story, really.

I used to go to a dive bar in college and drink lots of $0.33 Pabst blue ribbon drafts and sing along drunkenly to his "All My Exs live in Texas" on the jukebox.

I never thought to ever try another George Strait song. Its the only one I know. I'm guessing that there's a lot of more essential country artists that you don't own stuff buy. Lefty Frizzell for instance. I'd buy something else.

So if my roommate borrowed 50 Hits by George Strait from a friend and has yet to return it, it sounds like I should rip it to my computer for at least a few songs. Yes?

Also check out "George Set Me Strait" by Moonshine Willy on the Bloodshot Records 100th release comp. Funny ass song.

I don't own any G. Strait, but he is far from terrible.
