Former Republican Senator and ordained Episcopal minister, John Danforth gave an extraordinarily enlightening interview to NPR yesterday. He chastized the current administration and Neo-cons, in general for becoming nothing more than a tool of the Christian Right.

He answered the tough questions (including reconciling his pro-life position w/ support for stem cell research) eloquently and intelligently.

I never would have voted for the man, as he was too conservative in his views, but the interview showed that he was a man that truly does think about what is best for the COUNTRY, whether or not it jibes with his personal views. (i.e. - a "DISTINCT divide" between church & state... from an ordained minnister!!!) And he is, therefore, a man for whom I have nothing but respect.

Incredibly enlightening.

EDIT: Direct Link

He's been pretty vocal for awhile now - I saw him on some TV news show about a week ago saying this stuff.

And I tip my hat to the man. Like you, there's probably a LOT of stuff I'd disagree with him on - but I give him a ton of credit for coming out so strong on this topic.

i found these quotes interesting . . .

"You can support the troops but not the president" --Tom Delay

"[The] President...is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation's armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy." -- Rick Santorum

"American foreign policy is now one huge big mystery. Simply put, the administration is trying to lead the world with a feel-good foreign policy." -- Tom Delay

"If we are going to commit American troops, we must be certain they have a clear mission, an achievable goal and an exit strategy." -- Karen Hughes

"Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?" -- Sean Hannity

"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is." -- Governor George W. Bush

has the right gone left?

no, these quotes were all directed at Clinton.
