some music is so good and inspiring that i have to turn it off because i want to pick up the guitar and play.

this often happens with Dylan and Wilco, and just now happened with Ghostface (which is what made me think to make the thread, because it's cool that a rapper would make me want to write better indie rock songs)

anyone else have this "problem"

Mine has been a few songs in particular, as in that Ambulance Ltd song (away from my pc, forget name) about "honey I don't think you do..." Sorry. But yeah, that one still gets me, so much so that I generally have to plug in the headphones and grab a guitar, turn it up to SO loud, and then play/sing along in top-dork fashion. The attraction with the headphones is that, with nobody else home, even I cannot truly hear myself, which is a plus. The fantasy is complete.

I don't play anything, but simple things like Billy Bragg's Talking With The Tax Man About Poetry and Neil Young's Harvest make me consider it.

I have the opposite problem -- sometimes I hear something so good and imaginative, that I would never think of it. Especially when it is underground and should be huge (like Matt Elliott). It makes me want to give up making music. But then I get over it.

i get that reaction too.

listening to Otis Redding or Prince or James Brown, it's so far removed from anything i could ever hope to create that it makes me wat to give up. but then i get over it.

(by the way, i realize that obner is a penis joke . . . thus my "joke")
