I dont know...but I discovered p:ano and clap your hands through random suggestions. Just wanted to see others' discoveries out there, since this is pretty much my entire exposure to most music discoveries.

Im not huge into dance/house/electronic, but I liked vitalic, so stuff like that would be welcome, for a start.

Ry Cooder, Chavez Ravine.

It's not dance/house/electronic, but it's damn good. And random.

It's about Chavez Ravine (duh), an area of East Los Angeles that was in need of some serious renovations and reconstruction during and following the New Deal. Several locals stepped it up, but they became wrapped up in politics, money and baseball.

Though, some activists were thrown in jail for refusing to testify in the House Committee on Un-American Activities, a truly homegrown effort was put forth to completely revitalize the community. Before they could get the project on the tracks, big politics and bigger money came through with their bulldozers and O'Malley built Dodgers Stadium on Chavez Ravine.

Mix into this already interesting story the everyday human events that a community sees, the interplay of young guys and gals and the interworkings of a multi-racial community and it's a fun ride.

As Harry said before, the album does a phenomenal job of putting you in a time and place. The imagery is so vivid not only in setting but also emotion, and the arrangements complement the stories and characters that swoop in and out of the narrative.

It's almost like listening to a movie, and it's very well done.

You've never heard anything like it. And it's great.

Dammit. I just went back and wrote that review because I didn't mean to leave you hanging. Maybe someone else will get into it, I guess. Ha.

Go to your nearest Borders and/or Tower -- grab the latest issue of Wire, should come a free CD -- Wire Tapper 13.

EDIT: In the USA -- over there, they've already moved on to the next issue.

Wire is the new CMJ/NMM.

We could host an Obnerfest every fall and introduce new great bands like Death From Above A Paper Airplane Cut.

suggestion that hasn't been talked up much:

Danny Cohen - We're All Gunna Die

Touchpoints are Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Guided By Voices and Pavement, but his voice and lyrics are distinctly his. The album is both fragile and twisted. LooGAR would probably call it "downmongering" or something.

Colder - 'Heat'

Image
French one man electronica act with awesome techno-postpunk-dub-krautrock sound. Like what Joy Div's 'She's Lost Control' would sound like if reimagined today and replacing Ian Curtis with a Parisian.

It's not out yet (leaked though) so the only review around is this one

Is this anything like the last Colder release?

Somewhat similar stylistically. But better, more varied.

Question: is the Mike Elizondo who plays bass on ten of the tracks the same Mike Elizondo who did the live instruments on Dre's 2001, and has since become Aftermath's in-house go-to guy? ('Go-to', because if you read the liner-notes of Get Rich or Die Tryin', it's not Fifty nor Dre nor an artist whose work is sampled that gets the lead song-writing credit, but Mike Elizondo instead.)

Not to worry EF, I was hoping for some more information that would push me over the edge so I would buy it.

Gracias
