About a week ago I saw part of a concert on PBS. Didn't catch the name of the group but they played an Americana folky kind of song that I really liked called "Quicksilver Blues". Anyone know who this might be? On stage was just a guy with a guitar and a girl with her violin and both of them sang. They looked like they were both in their 30's maybe?

Anyone? Help me Obner.

Hmmmm. That's not it unfortunately. This band had to be somewhat well known to be featured on PBS I'm thinking...

i'd try checking here. apparently, PBS has different programming depending on where you're located.

Yep. Been there and waded through a bunch of programs but couldn't find it.

Dammit, Janet. This is really bothering me now.

Nope. Not them either.

Was it on Austin City Limits or some other program?

Okay. I think it might be Nickle Creek.

Anyone familiar with their songs? In particular one with "Quicksilver Blues" repeating through the chorus?

Nickel Creek are a very good new-grass folk family group (brother/sister/dad) who were unfairly pigeonholed as young country pop for a short time. They're much more roots and appalachian-based than country pop and quite impressive. Plaintive but not hokey, atmospheric but not broody. Very good musicians.

Hanson were unfairly branded in pop. Nickel Creek were unfairly branded in country, but have managed to get past that.

See, that's the problem. I didn't catch the name of the show. It looks like it might be Soundstage but I'm not sure. there were only two of them up on stage though...

Man this sucks.

On the program the guy was wearing a hat. Is that Nickle Creek in the photo?

I just downloaded a very nice song by them called When You Come Back Down but now I'm thinking that the song I heard is not them though.

Do you know who's been recently featured on Austin City Limits recently?

(searching now)

Most recently, ACL had The Jayhawks & Gillian Welch. But I think it was a rerun from 2002.

Yeah, for all I know it could've been a rerun.

Christ, how many concert programs does PBS have anyways?

Okay. I'm listening to some Gillian Welch now.

I think its her. Maybe. She does have a song called Elvis Presley Blues. Does she play the fiddle?

Yes and Yes to your questions.

And if you don't have any Welch, you'll quickly become a fan. She's one of the best there is.

Looks like I have good taste then, no?

I'm now reasonably certain that the song I heard was the haunting, bluegrass-flavored White Freightliner Blues by Gillian Welch.

Thanks fellow Obnetricians. I salute you.
