A broken heart is par for the course for a true Cubs fan.
So it looks like the season is over.
Whew!
You know, all that winning over the past few years has really worn me out.
It'll be good to go back to just expecting crap and just dying little by little over the course of the year, instead of experiencing that major heartbreak at the end, only to be set up for a "Maybe Next Year" that you actually BELIEVE.

Shit.

Can you tell I've been a Cubs fan for my whole life?
Kinda sucks, but there is a comfort to it, too.

To be fair I think Woods and Prior will be fine. They can't come off the DL and be in post season form. Derek Lee will be back also.

I don't have a lot of sympathy though because for the last month and a half the Braves have had more money on DL than they have had on the field. They also have openly STARTED 5 rookies a bunch of times.

Still have a half a season to go though and goddamn Nationals just keep winning. NL East is gonna be fun to watch.

it seems like there's always a 'first' against the cubs, i.e. Horatio Ramirez' "first ever complete game shutout." etc, etc etc

prior will be fine. i'm still not convinced wood will be. dlee is hurt, and it's gotten a bit worse (of course!). he might as well not play the ASG. i've never seen a team that struggles so much against rookie and/or no-name pitchers. our starters get sent out in 5 innings, where as cubs hitters fuck up and let the opposing pitcher go 7+. they are terribly impatient, swinging at first pitches all the fucking time.

i liked dusty baker, but it's as if he's trying to get fired. his lineups baffle me at times. when hairston was leading off recently he got on base 6 out of 10 times. he had the 3rd highest on base percentage of NL leadoff hitters. but he likes to batt kpatt and neifi perez 1-2 (or vice versa). these two assholes have the two lowest on base percentage of leadoff guys in the league. neifi did a great job in the beginning of the season filling in for nomar, but really it was a matter of time before neifi perez would wake up and realize that he's neifi perez. dlee could have 80-90 rbi's right now if he just had motherfuckers who'd get on base for him.

and what's with his goddamn allegiance to jose macias

The Nationals are not good. I like me some Frank Robinson, and I believe he's really getting all he can out his players, but they really are not good. The Orioles, while finally crashing back to earth after over performing all year, are a good bit better than D.C.

and every time the cubs seem to be on a roll (the west coast trip vs. the padres and dodgers where they went 6-1), they just give it all back (and then some) losing games they never should lose. all this talk of trading kpatt, but really, who the fuck would the cubs get for him? dude is awful. OH BUT HE'S GOT POTENTIAL

Trust me. Seeing them in person is painful, as if being in RFK wasn't bad enough. Now they have some guys hurt, which ain't gonna help.

Kerry Wood, post-surgery, is a tremendously overrated pitcher. He's essentialy a .500 pitcher who can't keep his pitchcount under control and doesn't know how to throw a baseball without eventually snapping his elbow off.

He will not be fine. His best years are clearly far in the rear-view mirror.

The Cubs are in free-fall right now and they need to get rid of Baker. He's been pretty horrible as a manager.

Uh, they just got back Vidro, their only all-star last year, who was out for 2 months, and everyone left on the DL is either DTD or is coming off the 15 day within 5 days. Are you sure you know which team you're talking about here?

The Nats are a pretty damn good team who's gotten some scrappy play from some fairly good ballplayers. I'm convinced they will make the playoffs in a generally god-awful NL.

Admit it.
You're uncomfortable with the White Sox in the driver's seat right now. Just as I was with the Cubbies in 2003.

Hopefully the Sox won't snap your heart in 2 the way the Cubs did to us.

this whole post is correct.
however, i am interested with how Wood will be with this new pitching style that is supposed to be better on his arm. but I think the damage is more than done. who the fuck knows, i'm sick of worrying about it.

I think Wood's only career optioin left is as a closer.

In 2000, I was uncomfortable as hell because we were getting career years out of mediocre guys like Jose Valentin, Herbert Perry, James Baldwin, Mike Sirotka, Jim Parque, a then-still-green Carlos Lee, and Cal Eldred while he was healthy. It was one of the most overacheiving teams I've ever seen, and I wasn't surprised when they only went 3 over in the second half, backed into the division and wound up not winning a playoff game.

This team isn't overacheiving at all, except for Dye and Garland. The scary thing is, if anything, most guys are clearly UNDERacheiving. Rowand's numbers are lite. Podsednik's average isn't even within 25 points of his career high, and his power numbers are way down. Konerko and Thomas are crushing homers, but their averages suck. Iguchi is doing about what you would've expected. Uribe is having a totally mediocre season. Crede is stinking up the joint again, except for the occasional homer. Buehrle is doing what you'd expect, and so is Garcia. The bullpen has been better than expected in some spots (Hermanson, Cotts, Politte) but worse in others (Marte, Shingo, Vizcaino).

I honestly expect this team to go very deep in the playoffs.

that's true. my only hope is that a different role would bring a different mentality and different results. the dude is simply not durable enough to be a starter.

Keep up the good work. That shit team in DC has given up more runs than they've scored on the season.
