Was sick last night.
Forgot to put the car in the garage.
Forgot to lock it.
Forgot I had two huge CD cases of about 500 cds on the floor in the back seat.
They're gone.
On my way now to file a police report.
A third of my CDs gone.
Not happy.

Like an idiot, I just tossed both cases in the back when I went to visit a friend a couple of days ago and didn't get them back into the house yet.

And of course they're most of what I've bought or got as comps over the past two years.

I hope to hell I get them back. If I don't, maybe it's the Big Jeesuz's way of telling me to find a new hobby.

Not cool. How good is your insurance agent? When we moved from NYC to Chicago, some bastard at the moving company absconded with "A" through "R" of my CD library. I had to compile a list of what was stolen, but eventually got a check for $6K.

Thank god there's no market for stolen vinyl anymore.

Hope you get your stuff back, that really sucks.

Also, when compiling your list, if you have OOP stuff, check for the going rate on eBay. I got them to value at $75 each of my early Jazz Butcher CD's. Try to document everything, and for retail value of the stuff that's still in print, go to the most expensive chainstore you can find, cite it as your source for value, and list the $18 bucks per copy. They'll argue the replacement value, but it's difficult to overcome a real life price sticker.

Be sure to pad your claim so it covers your insurance deductible. You had 3 huge cases in the car, right?

In the interim, can we help you out with burnt copies/mixes?

When I made the move from NY to Atlanta I shipped all my (empty) jewel cases.

Then, over the course of two trips, I used one of those cases that holds 250 CD's and carried it on the plane with me. My wife was joking that I was going to handcuff the case to my wrist.

<<<<<Very paranoid.

Wow. Ouch.

I hope you can cash in on the insurance money. Just out of curiousity, would you hit the auto insurance, or home? I know my CDs are on my homeowners policy... would that matter when filing a claim?

You know, unfortunately, if this happened to me I too would feel the need to buy back everything I had lost at the expense of buying no new music until I had

Call local used cd stores and have them on the alert for your stuff.

Look at the bright side, at least you still have 1000 left.

So sorry to hear this... my thoughts are with you, and I hope you're able to recover them, regardless of method.

The insurance part hadn't occurred to me. I'm pretty disorganized about cataloguing, but I might be able to figure something out.

Local police say a neighbor saw a teenager getting out of my car at about midnight last night. Possibly someone will get snatched. That makes me feel better.

Oh.

God.

Police just called me.

A kid's dad just showed up at the police station, with his kid in tow.

The dad found my CD's in his kid's room this morning.

He's 11.

11 frickin' years old.

I can't prosecute an 11 year old.

His sister is in my daughter's class.

I'll see what I can work out for getting the kid community service or something.

Damn.

Juvie hall, baby.

Glad you're getting your stuff back. Glad the kid's dad did the stand-up thing.

Lock your damned car, next time

If you press the issue, do the cops have to impound your stuff to hold as evidence?

I think most people would accept free cd's.

I love a happy ending!
