I want to implement this ASAP because right now we're adding tons of albums without this info. Basically I want to include a bunch of genre checkboxes to the Add Album page so that we can start categorizing top 10 lists, etc. by genre. We should have a pretty comprehensive list without breaking everything down infinitely. What genres should we use?

We could do by decade I guess, or by year.

The idea would be that with enough categories, different albums could be categorized in several without causing much conflict. Also, my thought was that anyone could edit an album's categories, so the person who ads the album isn't the sole arbiter of what lists it shows up on.

well, that does make it a lot more agreeable than watching the "what counts as trip-hop" megabattle start up for the umpteenth time.

i'm just gonna list everything as emo and leave it at that.

some genres that definitely make sense to include:
classic rock
oldies (pre-'65?)
hip-hop
blues
soul
dance
pop
International? (splitting up the different countries is stupid, but then so is mixing polka and ska. also, the term world music is stupid)
metal/hardcore

I think yearly groupings make the most sense. Otherwise, it's purely subjective and probably going to stir up some debate that would just take away from the original idea

Well, we will be able to group by all of the above, so it's not an issue of mutual exclusion. If you thought the genres were all wrong, you could just not click that view.

I have the following...

Rock
Dance & Electronica
Hip Hop & Rap
Jazz
Country
