He always seemed like he'd be the most approachable of all the original Enterprise crew. I'm guessing this is hitting Darrin almost as hard as John Peel's untimely demise...

Brian Bendis tells a great story about how he helped organize some nrrrdcon in Cleveland once and he and a pal ended up sharing a table wit him at lunch. Of course, all the nerds and nerdlings walking by would shout crap at him along the lines of beaming them up, how the sheilds won't hold, etc... this happened all day.
so after awhile, Bendis says to him "I have to say I really am amazed how well you put up with all these guys yelling crap at you all day". At which point Doohan looked at them and said "oh, I don't". and they noticed that he was constantly muttering responses under his breath like "whatever, you stupid bastard" and "you to hell, you dumb shit"

i'm paraphrasing, but it was a funny story.

He was lucky to get this far...

"During World War II, he participated in the invasion of Juno Beach on D-Day as a captain with the Royal Canadian Artillery. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest."
