1. counting crows - einstein on the beach for an eggman
2. everclear - so much for the afterglow
3. garbage - vow
4. smashing pumpkins - disarm
5. bush - bubbles
6. silverchair - stoned
7. cake - the distance
8. filter - hey man, nice shot
9. cranberries - dreams
10. foo fighters - alone + easy target
11. veruca salt - seether
12. toadies - backslider
13. soundgarden - my wave / black hole sun (?)
14. presidents of the united states of america - lump
15. live -
16. sublime -
17. sponge -
18. lemonheads -
19.
20.

the theme obviously is 90's "mainstream alternative rock". the trick is i'm (not so successfully) avoiding artists that i've used on other mixes, and using only artists i would consider a "guilty pleasure" - so in other words no Nirvana or Weezer et al.

need to fill in some slots...so far i'm working with

NO: shitty shit like candlebox, blind melon, deep blue something, blues traveler, urge overkill, goo goo dolls, pearl jam, 4 non blondes and shit like that.

YES: shitty shit like collective soul, soul asylum, cracker, pearl jam, pornos for pyros, and shit like that.

any and all help is appreciated. you've all done it before - start confessing!

I like the Toadies.

I would also nominate
Therapy? :: "Screamager"
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Maybe "Toxic Toast" or "Pictures to Prove It".
Less Than Jake :: "Never Going Back to New Jersey"
Local H :: "Bound for the Floor".

It's a little below radar, but Triple Fast Action, "Revved Up" rocks.

Also, Soundgarden but no Pearl Jam, whattabout Temple of the Dog?

i'm becoming rather uncomfortable with denoting "guilty pleasures" when the smashing pumpkins are considered as such. are you serious?

i'd put "lightning crashes" or "i alone" as the live song. maybe "into your arms" for the lemonheads. "plowed" has got to be the sponge song. (i have it on a tape in my car and it probably gets more comments than anything else right now - "i totally remember this! who is it?")

and how about kerbdog?

Sponge "Wax Ecstatic"
Loud Lucy "Down Baby"
Sweetwater "Superstar"
Black Grape "Shake Your Money"
Izzy Stradlin & the Ju Ju Hounds "Shuffle It All"
Sammy "Neptune Ave. (Ortho Hi-Rise)"

Although, the only one of the above I'd feel guilty about liking is Loud Lucy.

well i like SP but i have to find a place for them on a mix so i might as well put them on here. also, in reference to all the other bands being called shitty in one or both catagories, really what i'm looking for is that song that i have not heard yet that i can put on my mix. i guess i forgot to mention that i'm not looking for the band's "hit" (although in some cases the one "hit" was indeed their best song) just a popular band that has a good song in them. i've heard talk of cracker and collective soul as being decent groups, and i've heard from both sides about pearl jam...there's gotta be at least one gem from those acts somewhere in there.

also, if Alice In Chains ever had a good song, someone please tell me what is was.

thanks people you all rock

Bands from your list I wouldn't personally call guilty pleasures cuz I like 'em just fine:

3. garbage
4. smashing pumpkins
7. cake
9. cranberries
10. foo fighters
11. veruca salt
12. toadies
13. soundgarden
14. presidents of the united states of america
18. lemonheads

They all started outside the mainstream, anyway, not that I care much about such things.

'Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth' belongs on any list of big dumb 90s singles you love.

For the love of fucking god put that song on the mix it is fanfukntastic. really catchy power pop. the band got signed to a major in the 90's post grunge round up because they're from seattle. Then they got ignored and sorta fizzled but that album is awesome. I'm gonna play it tonight.

More bands I don't feel the need to confess about. Don't have a problem with any of them. Just don't listen to them as much as some others.

I see where you're going with this. It's bands that were actually decent-to-rather-good who get the nose-turned-up from prototypical (and somewhat mythical, I hope to God) indie snobs.

Basically, you don't feel guilty at all because you know you like the songs but other people might assume you SHOULD feel guilty. The guilt is amused pretense.

Yeah, that's cool.

Thing is, there's only four or five people who do backlash bullshit, either here or on CMJ. And that's really their problem.

I always liked "Got Me Wrong" from the Clerks soundtrack. "I'll Stay Away" is a good one too. I was a sucker for "Would?" when I was 17.

Backlash away.

Cause I also like "Love, Hate Love," "Man In A Box," "We Die Young," "Angry Chair," "Would?," "Rotten Apple," "Whale & Wasp," "I Stay Away," "Don't Follow," "Brother," "Right Turn," "Again," "Over Now," and some others that aren't springing to mind at the moment...
