Longhorn's new name: Windows Vista

This morning Microsoft announced the marketing name for Longhorn: Windows Vista. After the advent of Windows XP, it has been expected that the consumer OS products coming out of Redmond would turn away from the Date=Name approach (e.g., Windows 2006), and Windows Vista is the best they could come up with.

I have to say, it's not very catchy, is it? And is that Veesta, or Vihsta? According to the guy in the cowboy hat in the launch video, it's vihsta.

The name clearly attempts to evoke the idea of great views, of panoramic landscapes such as those you could fly though after installing Windows XP. Perhaps the Pro version will be called Vista 20/20 vision?

In related news, Beta 1 will be available August 3rd. Beta 2 is tentatively scheduled for early 2006.
