<FIRST Ryan Adams chucks a hissy fit at Splendour In The Grass last weekend.

Now in another diva moment, former Smashing Pumpkins supremo Billy Corgan has stormed off stage in a huff.
"Why won't you let me live in the now, why do you want to make me live in the past?" Corgan shouted back to the fan who screamed for "more Smashing Pumpkins songs" at his Melbourne gig this week.

The indie-rock legend then threw down his microphone and walked off the stage.>

Rollins was the best at these type of responses. "Excuse me? Did you say 'Six Pack?' You didn't have any hair on your dick when it was first out; why should I play it for you now?" That or the you're-really-annoying-me-but-I'm-going-to-close-my-eyes,-take-a-deep-breath,-and-pretend-you-don't-exist treatment to the groups of skinheads yelling for 'TV Party.'

EDIT: I would really like an understanding of why people think the Bryan/Ryan Adams joke is still funny or original. Is it just to get a rise out of him? Lame.

If I wrote a killer song that people still wanted to hear 10 or 15 years later, I'd play it for them. Yea, it might get old and I might want to play some new song I'd just wrote instead, but c'mon! ITS A FUCKING SONG, AND YOU ARE A MUSICIAN. You're not curing AIDS or putting men on Mars. Do what Dylan does, and change the tempo, key, or playing style if you wish. Make it interesting again, or simply suffer through it. But simmer down, prima donnas!

The first time I saw the Pumpkins they played "Silverfuck" for an encore. After the slow part and right at the exact second when he was about to hit his distortion pedal and kick in the crescendo/coda, he stopped, took off his guitar and said "You don't deserve it"

punk rock, dude.

Edit: I think me and the Cap'n may be talking about the same show.....

Yep, classic Billy. Somebody threw an empty water bottle on stage when I saw him last (long ago) and he went nuts. I remember being surprised.

And if you don't know already that you CANNOT have an intelligent dialog like "why can't you let me live in the Now?" with a friggin fan during a show, then you're never going to figure it out I guess.

I wish I could adopt this same behavior in my everyday world.

Yep, that's my opinion in a nutshell. Billy Corgan's current atttitude is the very definition of pretentious. "Please let me live in the present..." Right Billy, like 2 weeks before your 'solo' debut comes out you're trying to put the Pumpkins back together and you get pissed when someone yells out for one of their songs? I think the best thing he could have done was to do a fucked up reworked version instead of walking off. I don't think he's cool enough to do a Rollins or a Dylan.

Why the fuck would you go to a Billy Corganshow to hear a bunch of Smashing Pumpkins songs anyway. And why would you be a jackass and consistantly yell out to play said songs. Poor choice of where to spend your money IMO.

I wouldn't have walked off, but maybe if it were me I would have said in the mic, "Would you like you money back now, so you don't have to sit through my solo stuff and ruin everyone elses good time."

It's a cryin shame Billy can't just say things like that. His life would've been 400x easier over the last 15 years if he could.

edit: V. Playhouse.... "4 and a half percent -I KNEW that!"

Fair point RE: being jackass and yelling them consistenly. As an example, though, when Sting plays Police songs (which are often a highlight) it sets a precedent/expectation for this kind of thing. I'm sure other solo artists have done this as well.

Oh I hear ya man. I've seen Sting a couple of times and LOVE it when he plays the old Police stuff. But I also love his solo stuff as well, probably more (But that's another thread).

But if Corgan comes through my town, I'm not gonna go see him cause I have no interest in his solo stuff. If I want Pumpkins, tuff shit, they're gone. If they come back, that's when I'll check it out.

I love from the MTV video awards years ago, when Billy and the Pumpkins did a fast, distorted, corrupted version of 'Disarm'. that ruled.

Yeah, I was basically hugging the stage between him and D'Arcy, but that shit left me and my 18 year old mouth hanging wide open. But fuck it, the show was GREAT up to that point and I got to stand there and stare at Jimmy just absolutely ABUSE his drums all night. Good show, bad ending (tasted a bit bilous)

yup. He was pissy the only other time I saw them, too, about 6 months before that. Real good for 99% of the show, then somebody threw something, and we got a tantrum.

I understand, I've been hit square in the forehead with a semi-crushed (and unfortunately semi-empty) beer can mid-song before... you get REAL pissed, real fast. But shit's gonna happen. Handling it the wrong way encourages douchbags to replicate it.
