Lauren Bacall isn't shy about telling people what defines a worthy thespian. After establishing last year that she doesn't think Nicole Kidman deserves to be a called a "legend," the veteran actress told Time Magazine, "When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise."
She accuses Cruise of exploiting his tabloid-fodder love life to promote his movie career. "His whole behavior is so shocking," she says. "It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's a sickness."

I love when celebrities trash each other. :D

My roommate bought this on vinyl this weekend.

I've had the pleasure of meeting and tormenting Bertie Higgins twice. He's a fucking hack of the highest order. Visit his website sometime. Gar, indeed.

I agree for the most part with what she has to say about Cruise, but Nicole Kidman isn't all that ugly, a pretty good actress [above most by today's standards], and has acted fairly classy and tight lipped as far as exploiting her life and relationships.

For instance, if you stack Kidman up to Sorvino or Paltrow, her contemporaries, she's a shoe in.

Hollywood is just not that elitist thespian club anymore. It has been dumbed down over the years. I think this is what Bacall is really saying and she's right.

From what I've read Bacall has stated time and time again that her comments were taken out of context by the idiots in the media.

She was merely stating that Kidman was too young to be considered a legend, that legend status in Hollywood means you sure as hell should be in your 50's by now and produced a significant body of work.

And I agree with Seafoam, Hollywood is full shit of these days. Too many indisposables running around it. That's one of the reasons why quality of films is crap nowadays.

I wonder why Lauren Bacall would say you have to be old to be a legend....

Hm. No, I can't think of anything.

Ok smartypants.

But in all seriousness, when you think of acting legends you think of Monroe, Grant, Stewart, Bergman,Peck,Gardner, etc etc.

One can't work up a body of work by age 38 enough to be considered a legend. And Kidman sure as hell hasn't.

but has anyone ever called tom cruise a great actor? a serviceable one, maybe, perhaps one or two noteworthy performances, but i thought that the fact in his corner was that his films routinely made serious bank.

You've got actors
You've got movie stars
Occasionally, you have an actor that also happens to be a movie star

If her career ends today, no way is Kidman a legend. That being said, I don't think Bacall can be considered a legend either. At 38, Kidman has only made 8 fewer films than Bacall, and she's quite good in many of them. I haven't read or heard the Bacall interview, but she's not really got a significant leg to stand on if she's comparing herself to Kidman at this point.

like it or not, Tom Cruise is not only a bigger star than Lauren Bacall, he's WAY bigger.

As someone pointed out Bacall's comment was taken out of context. Nevertheless, if she(Bacall) is considered a legend it has more to do with her relationship with Bogart rather than her own career.

I don't see any evidence that Bacall is claiming herself as a legend. Both Kidman and Bacall are stunningly beautiful women and fine actresses, but neither could be accurately termed a "legend" - for better or worse, that term is reserved for people whose life (and career) has been shaped by a fortuitous entangling of talent, charisma, lies, myth, and happenstance.
