I had downloaded MP3BR Normalizer a while back, but looks like my 30 day trial subscription has expired. Anybody got a line on an equally good free normalizer?

makes the average volume of a bunch of tracks the same, so your mix doesn't get suddenly really quiet or really loud because the songs were mixed differently.

if you normalized it down to, like, zero.

I have used mp3gain on approximately 18000 tracks, and it doesnt alter the intrinsic properties of a track, the way musicmatch does, for instance, it simply creates a 'tag' that alters the volume and can be removed, if desired. You can make all your songs louder or less loud in order to cut distortion. It is free and I would highly recommend it.

So this is really just a smart compressor?

I use foobar's replaygain functionality which accomplishes the same thing. Burrrn is a CD-burning app that uses the same techniques without any of the files. It's nice because you can have reading at a track level (for mixes) or at album level (if burning a whole CD).

No. What this does is add tags to your mp3s telling you're mp3 player at what volume to play them.

I always thought MP3Gain and Replay Gain were two different methods trying to accomplish the same thing. Is MP3Gain just an implementation of Replay Gain, compatible with players that support Replay Gain?

Hey, Patrick, what is your preferred target volume? I've found the default of 89 to be too low for my liking, and have since gone with 92. However, I still think I might be a bit lower than ideal.

sorry if these are stupid questions, but...say i have 1500 songs on my mp3 player. i use this sw to set a number for every song on there so they all play at the same level?

why are beatles albums so quiet???? julia followed by trail of dead's relative ways is just jarring!

Holy shit, I need this!

I am running this program and it will probably go all night.

The normalizer in iTunes blows!

Mp3gain changes the levels for each frame of an mp3, so that no matter what mp3 player/program you use the volume is normalized. It's also completely reversible without any loss of quality.

Replaygain adds a tag containing level information, but it is only supported by certain players (iPod is not one of them).

I used to use mp3gain, and highly recommend it, but now that my iRiver supports replaygain I'm using that, especially because it can be turned on and off easily.

this has taken over an hour to just add my 18,000 mp3's in my mp3 folder over my 54kbs wireless network

I haven't even started equalizing them...

OK, I'm all done, and it works great.

Word to users.
Turn off the sound adjustment setting on your iPod and it works. I think I had set the ipod to automatically adjust the volume of the tracks, and it failed miserably. After using this software and having not changed the setting it made all the songs sound like garbage in addition to having to continuously adjust the volume, but after turning off the setting it works pretty dang good!
