That article is missing the one thing that would've cleared the whole mess up: a picture of the band.

Fat? Maybe.

Ugly? Hell yes.

I think they're a little overly sensitive if they walked of the stage because of this quote: "What do you get when you put two brothers and sisters in a band? A big fat melting pot of talent."

I suppose the word "fat" could have been intentionally aimed at the size of a couple of the members of the band but it's also possible he didn't mean it that way.

It's fairly easy to imagine this as a group of four sensitive, overweight people who are maybe a little too easily offended... he didn't say "here come four fatasses who play songs." But I don't know anything about them, so maybe not.
