Ed note: I graduated from high school in 1986. Some of the songs I didn’t know about til later when I moved to the USA a couple of years after graduation. Some of It I was already rocking while I was in middle school in Houston

1.public image ltd - "the order of death" – This is indeed so mid eighties, and it sets you up for what’s to come. All in all, it IS one of PIL’s Better songs, and its got all the tell-tale 80’s war-mongering(there’s DAT word) ominousity <--neologism? Anyway, I was immediately excited by this mix… an excellent idea.

2. doa - "war" – HEHEHE, I love a crazy cover, and this one has all the elements that make Me First and The Gimme Gimmes possible today. Bounce around your bedroom, everyone!

3. wall of voodoo - "mexican radio" – No words can describe what a fag I was for WOV in Junior High, suffice to say, I had “distorted doors to nowhere in the desert” drawn on every grocery sack book cover in my Jansport.

4. echo & the bunnymen - "bring on the dancing horses" (extended) – Good song, great memory associations, natch, but what the hell (in retrospect) was the deal with extended mixes in the 80’s. Extended mixes::80’s:Remixes::00’s?

5.dead milkmen - "bitchin' camaro" – I am forever in your debt for sending this mix if only for this song, a lost archive of how silly music is often the best. Dopey song, but one must love it.

6. the cure - "killing an arab" –Never my favorite Cure tune, but it’s a time capsule, right?.

7. sigue sigue sputnik - "love missile f1-11" – Ok, so when we were rocking this song back then, did I notice any kind of drug reference? NO. But now it seems that this song maybe has both a simultaneous drug & sex thing I just didn’t get before. Then, maybe it’s all pointless chatter, as it seems to also suggest that we blow everyone up, too. This song makes me need a mountain dew in order to make it to end. Anyone, anyone…bueller? Nice.

8. the vandals - "urban struggle" – Chalk it up to my heavy Wall of Voodoo influences at the time, but I was into all things Marricone, so this was in the collection of “cow-punk” played at max volume in my cabeza. Nugget #2---Thanks again. “I can’t help it if I’s born late! yeeeeeeehaw”

9. the lazy cowgirls - "rock of gibraltar" – I don’t think I ever heard this one, maybe its forgettable, fits well here, though. Like one of the songs on a soundtrack that gets relegated to the credits.

10. the jesus & mary chain - "never understand" – Never heavy into the J/MC, missed it, plus I was more electro than rock, decent tune, makes me want to listen to mazzy star, mostly.

11. the ramones - "i want you around" – my dad was a big ramones fan, so naturally I hated them with a passion, being 16-17years old. Only mildy enjoy hearing them now. I am a product of my parents, no?

12. siouxsie & the banshees - "cities in dust" – Dear journal, I hate my parents, I want them to die. I am grounded all because I forgot to take out the trash and I can’t go see Billy Idol at Astroworld and I really wanted to go because Sherri Marks is going, and I know she’s going to make out with Brad instead of me. This sucks, I want to burn down Astroworld. Nugget #3. I still love Souxie (Ok, my dad was cool, he had all of the Banshee’s stuff)

13. guadalcanal diary - "trail of tears" The second Athens band (after B-52’s) that I knew of. Seconds before REM. Nice

14. the neighborhoods - "no place like home" This one I never heard, nice, but mostly serves now as a reminder of a specific sound.

15. the models - "big on love" Oh, man, this makes me groan, I hope you don’t mind if we move on. I gotta say, though, the Video for this song is etched onto my cerebellum in every detail….and I have never even heard the song!

16. the smiths - "frankly, mr. shankly" Ahh, the smiths, I did indeed love the Smiths, I had buttons all over my camo army jacket to prove it.

17. new order - "this time of night" – New order is one of those bands I learned about when I got to college in Austin, so mostly listening to it now makes endorphins crawl up my spine and my skin get tight, I’m breathing fast listening to this right now, now I need some black lights and a wad of chewing gum. This song makes me want some black mock turtlenecks. OH, but ecstasy was tremendously awesome, no?

18. psychedelic furs - "president gas" man, in retrospect, Psychedelic Furs songs, go on for days, Its like junkie spoken word.

19. let's active - "waters part" This song actually sounds contemporary still. It’s a good tune. Good joke to slip it into a College Radio format and generate new buzz. Great riffs. Strong lyrics.

20. tones on tail - "christian says" Oh, I love this stuff, early club tunes for the angry youth. Front 242, Ministry…bring it on! PIB’s! Look at the size of my silver buckle set against my all black outfit! And castanets, where have all the castanets gone!

21. the plimsouls - "inch by inch" I love the Plimsouls, and anyone that knows something other than the one on Valley Girl is OK in my book, I listened to this album back to back for months. They remind me a bit of the Hooters now, and that’s Ok, too. I’d listen to Nervous Night right now.

This was a cool mix, and again, an A for originality in the category, pulling out the oldies for the Obnies was by far one of the cooler moves! Thanks for the memories, Dana. I give it Nine Mock Turtlenecks and a Coors Light tall boy.
