Did you recently pick a cowboy up on craigslist or something? I've never heard you talk about any of these artists.

Well, I'll take it as a compliment that you forsake your ready-to-be-panned International/Showtunes mix and embraced my country genre idea that you previously knew about it. Imitation is the best kind of flattery. At least you just didn't copy and paste my tracklisting from my review thread.

You're so funny.

If you look closely, my mix is not a country mix, genius. I don't like country music.

My mix is mostly rockabilly with some honky tonk and delta blues-folk, so get your facts straight before you accuse me of flattering you. ;) And don't assume I made this mix after you posted yours. I made 5 mixes in total with 5 different themes weeks ago.

Oh, and I just looked at your tracklist...lol...we have no artists in common and yours is a pure country mix. So again, bite me.

Loogar is offering a special discount on his reading comprehension class. We do have on artist in common...Sir Douglas Quintet = Doug Sahm

This is country buddy. Everysong on my mix has at least some element of Honky Tonk in it.

Buck Owens
Jimmie Rodgers
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Lefty Frizzell

But they are different time periods of country, so I'm not hating.

This mix was really a surprise for me. Granted, I don't know OPA that well or his musical tastes, but this was not anything like I was expecting. But, when I saw the track listing, I was really glad he went the direction he did. A lot of it was new to me. Here's the track by track rundown:

01. "Cakewalk Into Town" by Taj Mahal
This is enjoyable enough, but not something I will seek out to buy.

02. "Honey Don't" by Wanda Jackson
Fantastic stuff. I had heard different versions of this song, but not Wanda's. This is great, great, great.

03. "I Got A Tiger By The Tail" by Buck Owens
One of the few songs on this mix I already had. Classic. Buck Owens had such a great sound, and this reminded me that I really need to get more of his music.

04. "Wang Dang Doodle" by Howlin' Wolf
I respect Howlin' Wolf and the influence he had on many artists, but this is just not my thing.

05. "In The Jailhouse Now" by Jimmie Rodgers
I enjoy this a lot, especially the vocals and harmonies in this one. I like the raw, early country sound this has.

06. "Rye Whiskey" by Rising Sons
I'm not a fan of this style of music, nor of the vocal style on this. Next.

07. "It Ain't Nobody's Business" by Mississippi John Hurt
I enjoy the folkiness of this tune, when I expected it to be very bluesy. We hear this sound a lot in current artists like Smog and Iron & Wine. Nice track.

08. "Snake In The House" by The Del McCoury Band
Standing alone, I might like this song, but it seems very twangy to me after listening to the first 7 tracks of this mix. It's alright, but doesn't stand out to me.

09. "Cupid Boogie" by Johnny Otis & Little Esther Phillips
Meh.

10. "The Hearse" by The Astronauts
This is more like it. While it's not the best surf rock song I've ever heard, and it's quite an abrupt change of pace, but a good song.

11. "Blackberry Boogie" by Tennessee Ernie Ford
This song is fine (even if it's not about email), but it will never be a favorite of mine.

12. "Lawdy What A Gal" by Merle Travis
This is a bit cutesy but what saves it for me is the arrangement. I like all the instruments used and it's a fun song.

13. "Lipstick, Powder & Paint" by Big Joe Turner
Enjoyable.

14. "Dooley" by The Dillards
Pretty twangy again, but I do like this one.

15. "Guitar Boogie" by T-Bone Walker
This is alright, but not outstanding. It doesn't seem to go anyplace.

16. "Smoking Cigarettes And Drinking Coffee" by Lefty Frizzell
I've never heard this (to my knowledge) but feel like I should have. This is probably the best new find for me on this mix, and if I were to jump on the 0-5 rating scale bandwagon, it'd be a 5.

17. "Mama Don't Allow No Music" by Doc Watson
This is a fun song to sing along to and to clap to with my baby daughter, but it won't go on my wish list.

18. "Forty Days" by Ronnie Hawkins
Another classic.

19. "Stormy Weather" by The Spaniels
Another somewhat abrupt change from a rock song to a more smooth track, which is a bit of a let down, but the song is okay.

20. "She's Something Else" by Eddie Cochran
The pace ramps back up here with a fave of mine.

21. "So Come On" by Les Fleur De Lys
Another big style change (at least to these ears), but this song really works for me and is a nice discovery for me. It has a psychedelic vibe and doesn't seem to fit in really well with the rest of the songs.

22. "Honky Tonk Man" by Johnny Horton
Back to the rock basics again. A very good song.

23. "She's About A Mover" by The Sir Douglas Quintet
Another fun one that closes out the mix admirably.

Overall, I'm glad you did this mix instead of a "standard" indie rock mix. I wonder about the sequencing in some spots, but I really enjoyed this and found a few artists I need to explore further. Thanks.

I Spent My Whole Day Stealing Chickens, Mama, From the Rich Folk's Yard

1."Cakewalk Into Town" by Taj Mahal
Who does the whistle solo anymore? Trombone bass is a nice touch too.
7/10

2. "Honey Don't" by Wanda Jackson
I’ve heard this song before in a different form sung by a male singer. I think I might like this version better.
6.5/10

3. "I Got A Tiger By The Tail" by Buck Owens
My fav traditional country track on this mix.
8.5/10

4. "Wang Dang Doodle" by Howlin' Wolf
Bluesy, but I’m not sure what kind. It’s not bad but I’ve been mostly indifferent to it from the beginning.
5.5/10

5. "In The Jailhouse Now" by Jimmie Rodgers
Quite a switch. Back to the older country-based sound. Wry delivery of an otherwise serious topic.
7/10

6. "Rye Whiskey" by Rising Sons
I kind of like this. One of the more upbeat blues-based tracks with cool slide guitar.
7.5/10

7. "It Ain't Nobody's Business" by Mississippi John Hurt
Good song, with a simplistic folkier approach.
7/10

8. "Snake In The House" by The Del McCoury Band
This one cracks me up a little. “There’s a snake in the house. Get it out.” Another one of my favs. The twangier tracks on this mix seem to be more appealing to me for some reason. Perhaps I’m more Tejas than I suspected.
8/10

9. "Cupid Boogie" by Johnny Otis & Little Esther Phillips
Not really into this but the male singer/female singer exchange helps a bit. It’s “I’ve Got a Man” or “Promiscuous” for the 1950s. :)
6/10

10. "The Hearse" by The Astronauts
Nice surf-y track. Sounded really good the first time…got less interesting with each spin.
7/10

11. "Blackberry Boogie" by Tennessee Ernie Ford
A 2 ½ minute song on the adventures of pickin’ blackberries. Neat.
6.5/10

12. "Lawdy What A Gal" by Merle Travis
This is the kind of thing I’d expect to hear while watching Our Gang...The Little Rascals…whatever the show was called. I like the “I can’t stand two time traitors raised on beans and taters” line.
7/10

13. "Lipstick, Powder & Paint" by Big Joe Turner
One of the tougher vocal deliveries of the rockabilly/blues based tracks here. Cool sax solo.
7.5/10

14. "Dooley" by The Dillards
This one is fun…and over pretty quick. That whole “you sure play purty” comment at the end never fails to make me smile.
8.5/10

15. "Guitar Boogie" by T-Bone Walker
I always thought this guy had more of a blues sound. This is fine but it sounds more like rockabilly to me.
6/10

16. "Smoking Cigarettes And Drinking Coffee" by Lefty Frizzell
The voice makes me think of a twangier Roy Orbison. I dig.
7.5/10

17. "Mama Don't Allow No Music" by Doc Watson
I suspect mama might be a real bitch. But I like the continuous breakdown of the instruments that “mama don’t want being played around here.” It’s almost twice the length of the other tracks on this mix too.
8.5/10

18. "Forty Days" by Ronnie Hawkins
More rockabilly…picks up the pace a bit as far as tempo is concerned.
6/10

19. "Stormy Weather" by The Spaniels
It’s OK. At least it’s not “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight”. I’m not big on doo wop.
6/10

20. "She's Something Else" by Eddie Cochran
A jammier rockabilly track. I kept expecting him to incorporate the word “ass” in the rhyme scheme. Folks weren’t quite ready for that back then I guess.
8/10

21. "So Come On" by Les Fleur De Lys
This sticks out a bit but I like it. Druggy late 60s rock.
8.5/10

22. "Honky Tonk Man" by Johnny Horton
Catchy, danceable, honky tonk sandwiched between 2 grittier rock songs.
6.5/10

23. "She's About A Mover" by The Sir Douglas Quintet
Man those are some loud shakers. I listened to some other samples of these guys out of curiosity and they seem kind of diverse stylistically.
8/10

Thanks OPA! Sorry for the delay. I must admit, this mix was unfamiliar territory for me more so than the other mixes, but it was enjoyable. And 4 tracks made it onto my personal monthly mixes so far. This gets my nomination for best mix title.

Hey Kit, thanks so much for reviewing my mix. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I must admit, I had a lot of fun making it. It was probably one of my favorite mixes to make.
