1. public image ltd - "the order of death" - okay as a first song.
2. doa - "war" - haha, this is totally ridiculous.
3. wall of voodoo - "mexican radio" - wow. i haven't heard this song in years.
4. echo & the bunnymen - "bring on the dancing horses" (extended) - this is maybe my favorite echo & the bunnymen song. (this extended version thing isn't great, but it'll do.)
5. dead milkmen - "bitchin' camaro" - you'd think dead milkmen would know that it's "down the shore" instead of "down at the shore." i suppose this is typical of them.
6. the cure - "killing an arab" - eh, this is alright.
7. sigue sigue sputnik - "love missile f1-11" - i still see this video on vh1 classic occasionally. and, of course, i'm always reminded of ferris bueller's day off when i see it. this isn't a great song, but is it really supposed to be?
8. the vandals - "urban struggle" - this is all right. i mean, it's the vandals. and anything that mimics great old western scores is a-ok in my book.
9. the lazy cowgirls - "rock of gibraltar" - i neither like nor dislike this song. i'd probably tap my foot if i heard it out, but i probably wouldn't choose to listen to it now.
10. the jesus & mary chain - "never understand" - i've always liked this song until the end.
11. the ramones - "i want you around" - i vaguely remember it from rock'n'roll high school - not one of my favorites by them.
12. siouxsie & the banshees - "cities in dust" - yes! this is one of my favorite siouxsie songs, along with "love in a void" and "hong kong garden."
13. guadalcanal diary - "trail of tears" - uh... is this barenaked ladies? okay, nevermind. i've never heard this song before. i like it.
14. the neighborhoods - "no place like home" - this is fine. again, i wouldn't hang the dj for playing it, but i probably wouldn't play it myself.
15. the models - "big on love" - i really like this chorus a lot.
16. the smiths - "frankly, mr. shankly" - sometimes i think i'm the only person who doesn't like the smiths.
17. new order - "this time of night" - even though i've either never heard or haven't heard this in many years, it's unmistakenly new order and, hence, i like it. it goes a little long, but many of their songs do. it still never gets boring.
18. psychedelic furs - "president gas" - this started all right, but has been dragging for too long.
19. let's active - "waters part" - i'm not crazy about this song.
20. tones on tail - "christian says" - this is okay. it's pretty angry, isn't it?
21. the plimsouls - "inch by inch" - even though this wasn't the original closer, i think it works pretty well as a mix closer as the song closes out. i was initially disappointed because this replaced the best plimsouls song, but it fits.

i liked the concept of renovating an old mix almost twenty years later. and because it's not exactly the same mix, it gets a pass at spots where the segues are odd because of substitutions and whatnot. i didn't go into this mix expecting to really learn about any new bands, but my interest was renewed in a couple like guadalcanal diary and the models. overall, i liked it. and it's always nice to hear some favorites.

dnorwood - 35 on 1986

I feel like rating these songs numerically is pretty pointless given the concept for the mix, but I guess I'll do it anyway for the sake of consistency.

1. Public Image Ltd - The Order of Death. Hey, this is vaguely familar. I was only 6 in 1986, but I kinda remember Miami Vice. Never imagined that a PiL song would have been played on there, but I'm really not familiar with later-period PiL. It does sound kinda mainstream '80s and a little cheesy, but not bad. 3/5
2. DOA - War. Hahaha. 3/5
3. Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio. I had no idea who did this song or where I've heard it. 3/5
4. Echo and the Bunnymen - Bring on the Dancing Horses (extended). This song seems familiar, too, but it's not on any Bunnymen stuff I have. It's OK, and the lyrics are typically silly. 3/5
5. Dead Milkmen - Bitchin' Camaro. Hm. Guess I had to be there. 2/5
6. The Cure - Killing an Arab. I wanna know why this wasn't tacked onto any of those double disc reissues. 4/5
7. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11. Heh. 2/5
8. The Vandals - Urban Struggles. Kinda cool. 3/5
9. The Lazy Cowgirls - Rock of Gibraltar. Eh. 2/5
10. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Never Understand. Love that feedback. Has this ever been remastered? 4/5
11. Ramones - I Want You Around. Not one of my favorite Ramones songs. Played as it is, I kinda feel like you should've left "Blitzkrieg Bop" here. 3/5
12. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust. Damn, this is a vague childhood flashback. I didn't know this is what Siouxsie sounded like. Huh. Pretty silly. 2/5
13. Guadalcanal Diary - Trail of Tears. Yeah, this does sound like Barenaked Ladies-type alterna-pop. Nah. 2/5
14. The Neighborhoods - No Place Like Home. Pretty good, I guess. 3/5
15. Models - Big on Love. Nah, not even for the kitsch factor. 2/5
16. The Smiths - Frankly Mr. Shankly. I'm not a Morrissey fan. This one's alright, though. 3/5
17. New Order - This Time of Night. Now this sounds like it could have been popularized by Miami Vice. The lyrics definitely don't help. Might be sacrilege to say so, but… 2/5
18. Psychedelic Furs - President Gas. Haha. Nah. 2/5
19. Let's Active - Waters Part. I don't think I've heard these guys before, but I've seen the name a lot. This isn't hitting me. 2/5
20. Tones on Tail - Christian Says. God, I dunno if I'm just getting cranky because I'm at home working and writing mix reviews on a Saturday night or what, but the charm is wearing off here. 2/5
21. The Plimsouls - Inch by Inch. Well, that was fun, but I'm kinda glad it's over. 2/5

Overall:
Flow - 4/5. Good idea. You wouldn't want to hear any mixes I made as a teenager (not sure if I made any).
Surprises - 3/5. Well, no surprises in terms of new discoveries for me to check out (though I'm long overdue to get some JAMC), but there's a lot of shit on here I haven't heard in forever. Some hilarious stuff, too.
Song Quality - 2.5/5

Final Score - 3/5

Definitely going to have to revisit some of these. Thanks!

Ha, you guys are funny... I never heard the Barenaked/Guadalcanal connection, but you're right! thanks for listening and your thoughts. I didn't think I'd open up any real new avenues for folks with this one, but I thought it was a kitschy idea.

Oh, and Z? My husband LOATHES the Smiths and Morrissey.

1. public image ltd - "the order of death" 3* This works really well as an opener, and an interesting track to carve out of that album.
2. doa - "war" 3* DOA is what high school and beer were all about
3. wall of voodoo - "mexican radio" 4* suffers horrendously from over-play, still great though.
4. echo & the bunnymen - "bring on the dancing horses" (extended) 2* My least favorite Echo song--this is for the Bunnymen what the Pretty in Pink re-mix is for the Furs.
5. dead milkmen - "bitchin' camaro" 4* Classic. "Crystal Shit" played our high school at about the time this came out.
6. the cure - "killing an arab" 3* one of my least un-favorite Cure songs. Not a fan.
7. sigue sigue sputnik - "love missile f1-11" 1* Deserves every bit of scorn Denim laid on it--file next to Sly Fox.
8. the vandals - "urban struggle" 5* Awwww yeaah. Totally dig the GB&U intro.
9. the lazy cowgirls - "rock of gibraltar" 4* Excellent.
10. the jesus & mary chain - "never understand" 2* Never a fan. My sister dug 'em a lot, but then again she really likes Siouxie, the Cure and The Smiths.
11. the ramones - "i want you around" 2* The tender love song is definitely not their forte
12. siouxsie & the banshees - "cities in dust" 3* Again, not a huge fan
13. guadalcanal diary - "trail of tears" 3* I put this record on my Listmania. I usually choose Watusi Rodeo for mixes, but this one fits this mix really well.
14. the neighborhoods - "no place like home" 5* Half of one of the best singles ever to emanate from the city of Boston, and the best track on the mix. For those who are interested, this is available on the "Mass Ave." Boston DIY comp, which is easily the best of the DIY series.
15. the models - "big on love" 2* The keyboards are a bit too prominent, but on the whole it's not bad
16. the smiths - "frankly, mr. shankly" 2* Frankly Mr. Morrissey, aww forget it. Mom said if you can't say anything nice, post it on a message board. I really detest The Smiths.
17. new order - "this time of night" 2* I'm probably in the minority in thinking their debut was the best thing they ever did. This is one of those tracks that leave me perplexed that this band used to be Joy Division.
18. psychedelic furs - "president gas" 3* Forever Now is an over-looked classic, and the last of the Furs' great albums. Much love for the Butlers and company.
19. let's active - "waters part" 4* Always loved the guitars on this track. Let's Active definitely got better as they matured--compare this to the stuff on "afoot" and it blows the earlier ep to pieces.
20. tones on tail - "christian says" 3* My copy is on blue vinyl--nyah nyah.
21. the plimsouls - "inch by inch" 3* Solid

This mix was a lot of fun--some surprisingly deep tracks for an eighties comp, and not too many of the predictable "hit" bands. This is one I'll keep in the car for steady rotation. Thanks!

My first review of the exchanges. I would have had this up a couple of days ago if the board had been around this weekend.

1. The Order of Death - PIL 3/5

Didn't watch much Miami Vice, but I do like PIL even if this isn't one of my favorites from them

2. WAR - DOA 2/5

Dana is a punk rocker...Dana is a punk rocker now... I like it more than the original but that's not saying much

3. Mexican Radio - Wall of Voodoo 2.5/5 I still own this myself but haven't listened to it in years. Hasn't aged that well to my ears, just a novelty song

4. Bring on the Dancing Horses 4/5 Probably my least favorite Echo song but still a 4. Echo & the Bunnymen were in extremely high rotation on the billy g stereo in the 80's. I like 'em just as much now as I did then

5. Bitchin' Camaro - Dead Milkmen 3.5/5This album is so much better than anything else they ever did. Probably only my fifth favorite song on this album and I played it to death in high school.

6. Killing an Arab - The Cure 4.5/5

Great tune...another big 80's band for me.

7. Love Missile F1-11 - Sigue Sigue Sputnik 2/5 remember the name from 120 minutes but I don't remember their music at all. Not really a fan of this one, but its not that bad either

8. Urban Struggle - The Vandals 3/5

I don't remember them. Not bad, but I'm not really going to seek them out either. Possibly being kind with a 3 but I can recall a much worse song I used to own with the "I want to be a cowboy" lyric.

9. Rock of Gibraltar - The Lazy Cowgirls 4/5

I like this. I don't know them. Are they worth checking out or are they one "hit" wonders? And from a song with "I want to be a cowboy" to a song by the lazy cowgirls. Nice transition, 15 year old dana!

10. Never Understand - JAMC 3/5

Love some of their stuff, but this is just ok

11. I Want You Around - Ramones 4.5/5

Great great band. And I disagree with Billz, they thrive with this type of material. Very underrated for their gift for melodic pop

12. Cities in Dust - Soiuxsie and the Banshees 4.5/5

Great song...I just wish they could have maintained this level of qual over a full album. I love many of their songs but their studio albums bore me...one of few bands I'll endorse a singles album for.

13. Trail of Tears - Guadalcanal Diary 4/5

I used to own this. I traded it in not because I didn't like it but because I very rarely ever played it. Probably a mistake in retrospect because I like this more than I remembered.

14. No Place Like Home - The Neighborhoods 3.5/5

I have the Mass Ave comp but almost didn't recognize this. I listen to it far less than any of the others from that DIY series. I suspect I'd like the song more if it were sped up a little and the backup vox were lifted higher in the mix.

15. Big on Love - The Models 1.5/5

I'm not big on this song. Exactly the sort of 80's music that hasn't aged well

16. Frankly, Mr. Shankly - The Smiths 4/5 Not one of the smiths' best songs imo but I'm sure I featured this on a mix at one time or other two. I'm a big fan of 'em...always liked the line "I want to live and I want to love. I want to catch something that I can be ashamed of"

17. This Time of Night - New Order 2/5 I wish you had included Love Vigilantes...overplayed or not that's a great tune...this is pretty mediocre. I'm not a big new order fan though so [insert shoulder shrug]

18. President Gas - The Psychedelic Furs 4.5/5 Probably my favorite song on the mix. Younger generations discovering 80's bands for the first time don't seem to really appreciate them. I love them though at least their stuff up through and including Mirror Moves.

19. Talking to Me - Let's Active 4/5

I was very late to discovering them, only latching onto the Mitch Easter bandwagon around the time of "Every Dog Has Its Day" As much as I really liked that album I never did go back and pick up any older work from them...I guess I didn't have as big a music budget then. Where's the best place to start in their catalog?

20. Christian Says - Tones on Tail 3/5

I was a huge Love and Rockets fan but I never picked up any Tones on Tail. I like this fine but don't feel like I was really missing out much either.

21. Inch By Inch - The Plimsouls 4/5

Interesting pick from a great album...I've probably included half of this album on different mixes through out the years but am not sure if I ever included this one...not that its not a worthy selection

Nice mix...I enjoyed this trip down memory lane and a few things new to me that I might seek out.

Thanks for the reviews, guys... as I said in the enclosed page-long dissertation sent with the cd, I'm surprised I put this together too. Most of it was culled from recordings off the radio (complete with a youthful sounding dj popping in at the end to do a song/artist ID), and then others I just pulled off existing albums I had.

Ha, don't know if I'd consider myself a punk rocker back in the day, but my circle of friends were definitely into this, and as a result so was I. I wore a lot of black though... I do remember my mom lamenting that... "You look like you're going to a funeral!"

As for heavy selection, I was into that at the time... I guess I still am to a certain extent. I lived in suburbia, didn't always have access to a car, so I spent a lot of my teenage years, shut up in my bedroom, listening to records. Plus I had an older sister who brought home a lot of cool stuff from college that I glommed onto immediately.

billy, I'd start with "Cypress" for Let's Active. I think that's their best. The album starts off with a rocking number called "Easy Does," and about midway through, is one of my favorite songs "Crows on a Phone Line. " I remember sitting in my room listening to that, being really introspective. Next, I'd just go chronologically, and seek "Big Plans for Everybody" which had the song that I initially had on the cassette tape. I also have "Every Dog Has Its Day" and managed to see them on that tour. At that point, the two women who started the band with Mitch had left. I remember being really surprised that a lot of people weren't at the show, but me and my friends got to stand right next to the stage, and had a blast. I agree with Billz on "Afoot," it's good, but very amateurish. At the very least, it gave a sense of what mastery was to come later. I'm telling ya, I loved Mitch. It was a real shame when we moved to Winston-Salem, and I'd talk to locals about him, and they'd never heard of him. Or maybe I was just asking the wrong people.

This was a great idea for a mix - makes me want to totally rip off your idea. I was *cough26cough* in '86, and had some proto-Obnersnob attitudes about a lot of these bands at the time. Turns out I still do.

1. Public Image Ltd - The Order of Death
It makes sense that this would've been used on Miami Vice. Very dramatic and atmospheric, full of both dread and big drums and, ultimately, something of an empty gesture. Kinda the pastel blazer in PIL's wardrobe.
2. DOA - War
Now this takes me back. I remember this was released on the War On 45 8 song mini album. I think a friend of mine bought it the same day as the debut by Culture Club of all things.
3. Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio
It has always struck me as strange that this song became any kind of hit. It's so quirky that it probably would've been better, for everything except Stan Ridgeway's bank account, if it had just turned into one of those "lost" classics that could be resurrected on the soundtrack of some present day flick like Garden State.
4. Echo and the Bunnymen - Bring on the Dancing Horses (extended)
Yeh. I was already too old and way too much of a music and film snob to see any merit in John Hughes movies. The production on this song is the SOUND of those movies. A wash of mellow melody and those big echoing drums. Still, this is one of the better latter-day Echo & The Bunnymen singles (and, sheesh, it turns out that my concept of time in relation to bands has become fairly ridiculous - I really do consider 1986 or whatever it was to be "latter-day" Echo ).
5. Dead Milkmen - Bitchin' Camaro
I thought this was pretty funny at the time, but that extended improv opening doesn't even approach comedy anymore. I wonder how songs like "Serrated Edge" and "Big Lizard In My Backyard" have stood the test of time?
6. The Cure - Killing an Arab
I guess Robert Smith wanted everyone to know he read Albert Camus. I wish he would've come up with a melody for this song instead of the ersatz sitar approximation. Probably my least favorite song on the Boys Don't Cry release.
7. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11
Oddly enough, this is the first time I've ever heard Sigue Sigue Sputnik. I read a lot about them at the time - this was the band formed by Generation X's Tony James, after all, and I liked Generation X enough. But I remember in an interview, James said that he hired his bandmates based solely on the fact they were skinny. "You can teach someone to play an instrument," he said. "But you can't teach them to be skinny."
8. The Vandals - Urban Struggles
Another first for me. What year was this? Sounds a lot like a bunch of the cowpunk stuff I was grooving to - Tex and the Horseheads, Screamin' Sirens, etal. - kinda surprises me I never bought a Vandals album.
9. The Lazy Cowgirls - Rock of Gibraltar
I really like the Cowgirls but I can see how others would find it pretty blase. They're sort of a glorified bar band that refuses to play any requests and attacks everything at the same tempo and volume. But that's kinda their strength as well. Best served with liquor, in other words.
10. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Never Understand
Goddammit, did people ever look at you funny when you threw this on the turntable back in '86. Sounds like a dentist's drill boring into enamel while somewhere in the distance an Engelbert Humperdink song is playing. Dunno why it works, but it works.
11. Ramones - I Want You Around
Within the Ramones I've always preferred Joey's romanticism to Johnny or Dee Dee's more aggressive bamalama - and this is a song that I always seem to forget about - so this is a great addition to the mix.
12. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust
I gave up on Siouxsie and the Banshees after The Scream, when it became clear they weren't going to follow the dirty punk direction of songs like "Carcass" and instead were gonna be a bunch of semi-professional hacks. This is nothing egregiously bad, but just doesn't interest me anymore these days then it did back then.
13. Guadalcanal Diary - Trail of Tears
I can hear why everyone is comparing this to the Barenaked Ladies, but that just proves the Barenaked Ladies aren't totally rotten. Good, dramatic jangle-fests are always welcome.
14. The Neighborhoods - No Place Like Home
I'm a newbie to the Neighborhoods, and they remind me of a whole bunch of 2nd tier "alternative" 80s bands. That is, they're good enough to have been somebody's favorite band, but overall it's kind of a "had to be there" sorta thang. But I might still become a convert.
15. Models - Big on Love
Are these the Aussie Models (who put out the Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Foxtrot album) or a different set of Models entirely? Doesn't sound like the Aussies, but it DOES sound like that Noo Wave dancing with the arms flapping from side to side, Courtenay Cox style.
16. The Smiths - Frankly Mr. Shankly
I really wanted to like the Smiths back in '83. The reviews of the time made it sound so good (ie: Rolling Stone emphasized the "literate lyrics and razor sharp riffs"). The reviews failed to point out that Morrissey's voice sounded like a calf with its hind leg caught in barbed wire.
17. New Order - This Time of Night
Another one for the Siouxsie/Echo & the Bunnymen/Models noo wave dance set. Not my thing back in the day. Still not my thing.
18. Psychedelic Furs - President Gas
I liked Richard Butler's voice, which always struck me as a refinement on Johnny Rotten's yowl. But after their debut, they seemed to get incrementally worse with every release. "Danger" was a good track off this album, as I recall.
19. Let's Active - Waters Part
This is my favorite Let's Active song, so good stuff on including it on the mix! I went through my Mitch Easter phase around the same time as my Don Dixon phase - figuring eventually both of them would put out something undeniably classic. My, as they say, bad - neither of them ever seemed to pull it all together. Good producers, though.
20. Tones on Tail - Christian Says
I remember disliking Tones On Tail when they first appeared, lumping them in with all the other trend-hopping Brit bands of the day - but I've come around to appreciate them. You'd think I'd subsequently learn a lesson about knee-jerk prejudices coloring my perception - and maybe I have (but I'm keeping that a secret). Goddamn that drum sound anyway.
21. The Plimsouls - Inch by Inch
I was playing some Plimsouls to my wife the other day, and telling her how back in '83 I got in a HUGE argument with a short-term girlfriend because she insisted that the Plimsouls were punk. She became a psychologist. If I ever meet her again I'm gonna start that argument up right where we left off, as if no time at all had elapsed, and see if she can find that mental affliction in her textbooks.

GREAT MIX! Like I said, I love the concept - and out of the 21 tracks I own NONE of them on CD. That's good as gold, Jerry, GOLD.

cool, t'anks Rads for the review... to respond:

Dead Milkmen- yes, very dated now, but to my teenage mind, I thought it was a hilarious commentary. The only other song from their back catalog that would totally fit the time is "Instant Dance Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)."

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - this particular track isn't the version I had on the cassette... I couldn't find it. Like they've clearly edited out the bit about the "mondo chino giving head." Also, the voice samples are different... the quotes are from "Blade Runner" and "Scarface" I think, but the one on the cassette are clearly the actors' voices -- this one sounds like someone else is reciting it. And they left one BR quote out... "I'd rather be a killer than a victim."

Vandals - not sure, as I never owned the album it came from.

Jesus and Mary Chain - actually I do remember putting that record on for the first time and thinking, "Wow, this is NOISY!" But I liked it.

Ramones - I remember my big sis taking me to see 'Rock n Roll Highschool' when I was visiting her at college (I was 9 or 10), and this particular track always struck me.

The Neighborhoods song was a last resort... I couldn't find the track I wanted, which I think is much better.

Models - yes, same Aussie band. I think this was the last proper album they made before calling it quits.

(your comment about Morrissey's voice made me snort, and is in fact, true)

After putting this together, I went out and bought all the Let's Active cd's. Some songs hold up well, others do not. Funny you should mention Don Dixon, as my big sis was also into him around the same time.

I've got the Tones on Tail 'Everything' cd at home. It's quite nice for background music and was pretty experimental (I thought) at the time. Yeah, drum machines = bad.

The Plimsouls - your ex probably saw 'Valley Girl' one too many times and automatically assumed they were punk because Nic Cage was SO PUNK in that movie. I really need to revisit that album soon, as I don't remember a bad track on it.

"Rain" is one of my favorite mood/ambient pieces.

Well, this is an interesting concept. It gives me an idea of what modern rock radio sounded like when I was celebrating my first birthday. There were only a couple songs off here that I already knew, a handful more off your original mix.

1. PIL - The Order of Death
Interesting but the entire thing sounds like it should be an intro for a song. Like, you're waiting for the song to begin but it doesn't. It just keeps repeating itself over and over.

2. DOA - War
I've never really liked DOA. This cover isn't bad, though. I wouldn't mind listening to it occasionally. If I was driving around with some guy friends, we would probably get real into this.

3. Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican Radio
I know of this song. It's pretty kitschy. I can't see this being spun for much more than novelty.

4. Echo & The Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses
This was a song I knew going in and the first one on here I really like. Echo and co. are one band I definitely need to start picking up the remasters from.

5. Dead Milkmen - Bitchin' Camaro
Wtf. Next.

6. The Cure - Killing An Arab
Already liked this one too. Not my favorite Cure song, but a good one.

7. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11
So '80s. Next.

8. The Vandals - Urban Struggle
"I want to be a cowboy." Oh no. This is not a good sign. Well, it's not as bad as I expected. Still. When I listened to the Vandals, I listened to stuff better than this.

9. The Lazy Cowgirls - Rock Of Gibraltar
I don't know. If it was mixed better, I might like it more. I don't mind it. I'm pretty much in the middle with a slight leaning to liking it.

10. The Jesus And Mary Chain - Never Understand
Damn. It's not good when even the JAMC track lets me down.

11. Ramones - I Want You Around
Pretty much can't go wrong with these boys. Second only to 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' in terms of "perfect for a mixtape for a person you have a crush on".

12. Siouxsie & The Banshees - Cities In Dust
This is familiar. Not bad.

13. Guadalcanal Diary - Trail Of Tears
This sounds a lot more modern than anything else on the disc. This is the first song that I like that I didn't know before.

14. The Neighborhoods - No Place Like Home
Ehhhh.

15. Models - Big On Love
I... I don't know.

16. The Smiths - Frankly Mr. Shankly
The first song I heard after 'How Soon Is Now?' on the radio every time they did a top new rock countdown. My friend sent this to me. I laughed the first few times I heard it. I don't know why. Maybe it disarmed me so much that I felt like I had to put up a shield against it. But regardless, I love this song now. I love all their songs now. Fuck, it's The Smiths. End of discussion.

17. New Order - This Time Of Night
The synths or whatever in the background makes my skin crawl.

18. Psychedelic Furs - President Gas
I didn't know Bowie fronted the Furs.

19. Let's Active - Waters Part
This is okay, I guess.

20. Tones On Tail - Christian Says
Oh, it's one of those Devo/B-52's-like group.

21. The Plimsouls - Inch By Inch
That "day by day" part kind of ruins it for me.

Well, unfortunately, this isn't really my bag. A lot of it sounds really dated. If I had heard any song off that in a different context, I still could've named it as being from the '80s. And it felt really long too. 77 minutes is pretty long to begin with, but it felt like an hour and a half.

Still, it's an interesting experiment. I don't make mixes for myself but, based on journal entries and other things, I should be able to do a similar thing in fifteen years and look back at what I listened to in grade 11. Then I can shake my head in disapproval.

I'm sorry it wasn't your thing, dog... maybe it's a case of "guess you had to be there." I feel the same way about a lot of the music kids listen to today, however, just so you know... this wasn't typical teenage fare in my day. Most of these bands were not played on regular mainstream radio. Actually Tones on Tail is an off-shoot of Bauhaus/Love and Rockets, so I don't hear a b-52s/devo connection at all.

Thanks for the review anyway!

i'm not sure how beneficial my mix reviews are, as they're simple and purely based on opinion, but here goes another one.

1. public image ltd - "the order of death" - *** miami vice. yes.
2. doa - "war" - **
3. wall of voodoo - "mexican radio" - ***
4. echo & the bunnymen - "bring on the dancing horses" (extended) - *** i never really listened to them, but i totally hear their influence in british sea power. i like stuff that makes me realize i should really explore older music.
5. dead milkmen - "bitchin' camaro" - * i imagine i would have found this fun back then, but it just sounds a little silly now.
6. the cure - "killing an arab" - ***
7. sigue sigue sputnik - "love missile f1-11" - ** the beat gets a little tiresome
8. the vandals - "urban struggle" - *** this is fun.
9. the lazy cowgirls - "rock of gibraltar" - *** i like it, it just sounds like this might have been an mp3 that was compressed too much. maybe that's just how it sounds.
10. the jesus & mary chain - "never understand" - ** i think i'm just not a fan of noise like that (the drill sound)
11. the ramones - "i want you around" - ***
12. siouxsie & the banshees - "cities in dust" - **** like drinky, this totally gave me a childhood flashback. i like this a lot.
13. guadalcanal diary - "trail of tears" - *** nice. this doesn't sound as dated as some of the others.
14. the neighborhoods - "no place like home" - ***
15. the models - "big on love" - *
16. the smiths - "frankly, mr. shankly" - *** i never heard a lot of smiths stuff. sounds good.
17. new order - "this time of night" - **
18. psychedelic furs - "president gas" - ** tracks are starting to blend a little for me here.
19. let's active - "waters part" - ***
20. tones on tail - "christian says" - *
21. the plimsouls - "inch by inch" - ***

i bought that 80s box set "left of the dial" which i dont listen too enough. that and your mix reminds me there was some good stuff in the 80s. i was 9 in '86. so i'm not familiar with all of these. thanks for the mix!

soreal, I have the Left of the Dial box set too. I got it as a Christmas gift a few years ago, and listened to it nonstop for about a month. Lots of great tunes on that collection. And yes, it was totally indicative of the stuff my friends and I were listening to back then, not the usual schlock you find on 80s comps (although I will not deny that I did listen to Madonna, INXS, and their ilk back then). Hell, I still admit to listening to Duran Duran in present day.

Fresh, I have not heard the Authority Zero version of "Mexican Radio." I agree with whoever said it earlier... that song is so weird and quirky, I'm surprised it ever became well known at all. Be glad I didn't put Stan Ridgway's "Camouflage" on there instead. :shudders: Although I do remember liking "Drive She Said."

Thanks for the reviews... I'm actually kinda surprised at the number of folks who do NOT like the Let's Active song. It's like... sacreligious to hear you all say that! ;)

"Camouflage" isn't *that* bad--it's a different take on Big Joe & Phantom 309. There's really nothing on the entire "Big Heat" album that I dislike.

side one:
1. "The Order of Death" - PiL
Believe it or not, the only other PiL song I ever recall hearing is that "I could be wrong, I could be right" song, and then this one is all "This is what you want, this is what you get." Johnny Rotten seems to be a fan of that type of lyrical structure. I really like the synths on this one. On the Miami Vice spectrum, I'd rank this well above "You Belong to the City," but still below "Smuggler's Blues." It's nice to know Glenn Frey didn't have a total monopoly on that show's soundtrack. Of course, speaking of former Eagles, the vocals are fairly reminiscent of Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" ("Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down.").

2. "War" - DOA
Refreshing take on the rather tired (especially in this climate) Edwin Starr classic. I'm with you on the jowels thing, Dana ("Say it again!").

3. "Mexican Radio" - wall of VoodooNot long after my hometown cable provider got MTV, I remember staying up watching all night on the weekends in hope of seeing this video -- mainly to see the guy emerge from the pot of beans. This was probably my favorite song for a good 9-month stretch back in High School. Few lines will ever top the repeatability of "I wish I was in Tijiuana, eating barbecued iguana." Definitely a Top 10 song of the entire '80s.

4. "Bring on the Dancing Horses (extended)" - Echo and The Bunnymen
Some things sound uniquely '80s, yet still manage to transcend that era. Um, this ain't one of 'em. Still, it's a fun listen for nostalgia purposes.

5. "Bitchin' Camaro" - Dead Milkmen
I got a bitchin' Camaro as a high school graduation present. It was an '81 Z28 with t-tops. I also love places that let 16-year-olds drink...well, at least I did when I WAS 16. The Doors bit is kinda funny.

6. "Killing an Arab" - The Cure
I'm kind of surprised Stephen Colbert didn't play this in the background during the White House Correspondent's Dinner. On second thought, he's probably more of a "Rock the Casbah" kind of guy. I'm not the world's biggest cure fan, but I like this better than most of their stuff.

7. "Love Missile F1-11" - Sigue Sigue Sputnik
The Clockwork Orange clip is a great way to open this. I think I remember this from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Or maybe it was from Morgan Stewart's Coming Home. I'm pretty sure it wasn't in Parker Lewis Can't Lose. I know for a fact it wasn't in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon.

8. "Urban Struggle" - The Vandals
This is pretty catchy. Reminds me a little bit of Primus, but not quite that bizarre. I like it.

9. "Rock of Gibraltar" - The Lazy Cowgirls
Wait a minute...these aren't GIRLS! FALSE ADVERTISING!!! (haha) I really dig the bass on this track. This is very danceable.

10. "Never Understand" - The Jesus and Mary Chain
Some JAMC works for me, some doesn't. I'm not sure why, because their songs pretty much all have the same M.O. Anyway, for whatever reason, this one doesn't really grab me.

11. "I Want You Around" - Ramones
Not really much to say, other than Ramones = solid. Always.

12. "Cities in Dust" - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Most of their stuff I'm not crazy about, but this I like. So, Sioux me!

13. "Trail in Tears" - Guadalcanal Diary
Great stuff! Outside of "Mexican Radio," probably my favorite track on the mix so far. Fantastic jangly guitar sound here!

side two:
14. "No Place Like Home" - The Neighborhoods
This probably would have fit in really well on the Valley Girl soundtrack. I mean that as a compliment.

15. "Big on Love" - Models
This probably would have fit in really well on the St. Elmo's Fire soundtrack. I DON'T mean that as a compliment.

16. "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" - The Smiths
There are two types of Obnish -- those who think The Smiths should be worshipped and revered like gods, and those who think they're whiney fops in desperate need of Prozac. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category. That being said, this song is actually pretty good. Maybe billy g is right, and my contingent has been painting Moz and Co. with too broad a brush. Should I really investigate their back catalog? "More good, Mrs. Norwood?"

17. "This Time of Night" - New Order
So much as seeing the NAME "New Order" make me cringe, as "Bizarre Love Triangle" was the bane of my existence back in college. Of course, I still wasn't quite ready to let go of Van Halen, so perhaps I was to blame. Then again, after listening to this, I'm considering picking up a used copy of 5150.

18. "President Gas" - Psychedelic Furs
They should do a remake about Dubya, and call it "President Ethanol." Man, that guitar actually sounds a lot like Pat Travers. Yeah, "Snortin' Whiskey and Drinkin' Cocaine" Pat Travers. That's right, "Boom, Boom OUT GO THE LIGHTS!" Pat Travers. Anyway, Richard Butler had one of the coolest voices of the '80s. I really like this track.

19. "Waters Part" - Let's Active
What was their huge hit? I remember them having at least one really big one, and also remember when Mitch Easter was BMOC. Didn't he have something to do with "Praying Mantis" by Don Dixon? I used to really love that song. This one's really good, too. They were an Athens band, right? I.R.S., and all that?

20. "Christian Says" - Tones on Tail
Isn't this the band with the extremely risque album art that Rami was posting about a short while back? Those electronic drums are awful...yuck! Is this kind of the precursor to Nine Inch Nails and all that industrial stuff that was so big for a while in the early '90s? That's not really my bag, baby.

21. "Inch by Inch" - The Plimsouls
I made a Valley Girl soundtrack reference earlier, and if that soundtrack made anyone, it was The Plimsouls. They really were huge for a while, because of "A Million Miles Away," but I guess in retrospect they never blew up as big as they should have. They were really good. This song isn't the best thing I've heard by them, but still pretty solid.

I really enjoyed that trip down memory lane, Dana! A few of the tracks don't hold up as well here in the '00s, but it was still fun to listen to everything here. It was like being transported back to the high school and college days. And for that, this mix deserves nothing less than a B+.

Funny that, as the song "Rise" you are referring to you is based upon an old Irish blessing, "May the road rise to meet you."

Yes, you are correct... Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Tinderbox is actually a very solid album. Oh, I know there are purists here that would be like, "Hell, no... Hong Kong Garden is where it's at." I like both, but this album was terrific in the mid-80s.

I will take it as such! :)

I'll be the first to admit that The Smiths do NOT appeal to everyone. My husband loathes them. He also loathes the Cure (I think it has something to do with the crybaby singing voice). So with that said, it's up to you, man. I think many of the tracks that made the Smiths popular are not necessarily the best songs, as is typical of a lot of bands who get radio airplay. I would definitely check out Louder than Bombs.

Hey, I remember Pat Travers, and I can hear that too. Interesting. Never thought about it before! Yeah, when listening to this track, I thought it was very apropos for the times.

He did work with Don Dixon, and I also remember "Praying Mantis." Their huge hit would be.... er.... "Every Word Means No?" That's off their first EP. Let's Active were from Winston-Salem, NC.

I don't know which risque album art you speak of. Tones on Tail was basically Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus, and Glen Campling on bass. So yeah, I guess they were the precursor to NIN, but I attribute that more to Bauhaus. You should check out their albums "Everything!" and it will give you a better sampling. Hey, at least I didn't put dance club hit "Go!" on there. (btw, did you know Bauhaus is opening for NIN on tour this year???? Sacreligious, imo).

The whole "Everywhere at Once" album is remarkably catchy. I used to have it on vinyl. I don't think they ever made a cd pressing of it though.

Thanks for the review!

Louder than Bombs ranks near the bottom of their catalog imo, just above Rank and S/T. I do think everyone should listen to "Hatful of Hollow" before completely dismissing the Smiths though. That album is mostly very upbeat and in fact a good bit of it rocks fairly hard. It was also a top 20 listmania album for me.

1. public image ltd - "the order of death" - Oddly enough, this was the most played song on my iTunes for about 8 or so months. I had a "couch guest" that was beyond obessed with this song. In fact, I once posted a thread on either CMJ or obner trying to figure out who wrote it and where I could find it. The CD was OOP but it appeared on the Blair Witch soundtrack. Quite menacing and repetitive, but I like it. 4/5

2. doa - "war" - This just seems unnecessary. Never heard this version. Sounds real machismo but in a cheesey way. 1/5

3. wall of voodoo - "mexican radio" - This song always made me think of Dance Hall Days for some reason. It's one of the better moments in 80s radio. 3.5/5

4. echo & the bunnymen - "bring on the dancing horses" - Can't knock Echo & the Bunnymen. They rarely did anything wrong pre-1990. 4/5

5. dead milkmen - "bitchin' camaro" - Never heard this before. Strikes me as being an ersatz lounge workout until punk rears its head. Sounds like they are saying "pigeon Camaro." 2/5

6. the cure - "killing an arab" - I only recently heard this song a couple of years ago but have grown to like it, even though it is quite short. 3/5

7. sigue sigue sputnik - "love missile f1-11" - This just seems like somebody ad libbing vox and samples over a repetitve synth and drum machine loop for the most part. Sure it would have sounded cool in 1982. 2/5

8. the vandals - "urban struggle" - Rowdy and cowpunk-ish. I'm fine with it. 3/5

9. the lazy cowgirls - "rock of gibraltar" - Never heard this before either. Aggressive like The Vandals' track. It's likeable, but nothing that's making me run to allmusic and find out what they are all about. 3/5

10. the jesus & mary chain - "never understand" - I don't like Psychocandy as much as most J&MC fans do. In this case, this track appears to have no distinct kick drum (not on my car stereo anyways). Still the layers of feedback are pretty freakin cool. 3/5

11. the ramones - "i want you around" - Ramones are hit or miss for me. I tend to like their faster paced songs. This is fine though. 3/5

12. siouxsie & the banshees - "cities in dust" - Classic! One of my fav Siouxsie songs. 5/5

13. guadalcanal diary - "trail of tears" - I've never heard this band. Reminds me a bit of "The One I Love" by REM. A definite jangly/indie feel. 3.5/5

14. the neighborhoods - "no place like home" - Upbeat...simple chords... Hand claps are a nice touch. It's something I can listen to and enjoy but if I were to listen to something like this regularly, I tend to prefer more updated production values. 3/5

15. the models - "big on love" - Catchy, but resistibly so. This is the type of generic 80s sound meant to be locked in a time capsule never to return. 2/5

16. the smiths - "frankly, mr. shankly" - Not one of my fav Smiths songs, but I always liked the lyrics. 3/5

17. new order - "this time of night" - Not as familiar with this one. Corny gratuitous electronic hand claps, but it's NewOrder so I'll let them get away with it. I really need to check out more of their earlier stuff. 3.5/5

18. psychedelic furs - "president gas" - I almost thought I was listening to Bowie. This is cool. I bought a Psychedelic Furs "best of" a while back but never listened to it. Maybe I should. 4/5

19. let's active - "waters part" - I've seen this name before but don't recall ever hearing them. I can imagine myself really liking this. I'll definitely come back to this one. 3.5/5

20. tones on tail - "christian says" - There's Bauhaus, then there's Love & Rockets, then there's Tones on Tail. It's not bad, but I'm not big on the snare. 3/5

21. the plimsouls - "inch by inch" - More of the new wave meets prog rock thing. Catchy song. 3.5/5

This was a good stroll through 80s music of the college rock variety. My musical landscape in the 80s did not consist of very much, so this helped me play catch up so to speak on the more obscure stuff. And I gotta revisit Psychedelic Furs and earlier NewOrder for sure... Thanks dnorwood!

Yeah, some of the songs are painfully 80s (and haven't weathered well), but I was trying to be true to the original, which at the time, my little teenage self thought was pretty hip. OK, maybe not the Sigue Sigue Sputnik song... that was more of a novelty thing. And believe it or not, that song came out in 1986, not 1982. Just be glad I didn't include Age of Chance's cover of "Kiss" or something from the Information Society. ;)

I've got most of Let's Active's back catalog, so give me a holler if you're looking for something in particular.

Guadalcanal = REM's One I Love AND Barenaked Ladies? Interesting.

Thanks for the review, Naked.
