SIMPLE MINDS
The First Five Albums 1979 - 1982

Surely no reasoned human being could possible argue that Simple Minds were anything other than some crappy eighties chart band? Breakfast Club soundtracks, pompous stadium tunes and Jim Kerr, (once rather amusingly described in Melody Maker as "more overblown than a hairdresser in high wind") prancing around in leather trousers. Truly ghastly.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm a reasoned human being or not, but I present this mix as the case for the defence. You see before Simple Minds caught the overrought mid-eighties suck, they had actually been a proper band. Starting off as one of Glasgow first punk bands, Johnny And The Self-Abusers, by 1979 they had swapped punk for a rather sophisticated, Euro-centric post punk.

Their first album, 1979's 'Life In A Day', was something of a write off being the sound of a band unsure of what to do after the death knell of punk. However, by 'Reel To Real Cacophony' - released later that year - they showed some promise, an arty mixed bag that melded dub influences, Siouxise & The Banshee's, Krafwerk and European avant-garde.

'Reel To Real Cacophony' was followed by their greatest achievement, 1980's 'Empires and Dance', particularily the great run of tracks on Side Two from 'Capital City' to bona fide post punk classic 'Thirty Frames A Second'. From then on Simple Mind's music became less strange and more pop orientated but they were still capable of turning out some great tracks (listen to the excellent 'Theme For Great Cities' for proof).

The great commercial breakthrough came with 'Promised You A Miracle' and it's encombant album 'New Gold Dreams 81-82-83-84'. A watershed in the bands output, they would subsequently aim for a more mainstream audience from then on in.

Tracklisting:

1. Factory
2. Veldt
3. Naked Eye
4. Premonition
5. Capital City
6. I Travel
7. Constantinople Line
8. Twist/Run/Repulsion
9. Thirty Frames A Second
10. Theme For Great Cities
11. The American
12. Sweat In Bullet
13. Big Sleep
14. Somebody Up There Likes You
15. Someone, Somewhere In Summer Time
16. Promised You A Miracle
17. New Gold Dream 81-82-83-84

I'm a wee bit disappointed they are .wma files BUT other than that, this is a brilliant mix Darrin. Of course, I came to it already a fan of early Simple Minds and agreeing completely with your didactic text that prefaced the mix.

I haven't listened to the early stuff in so long as I've got it on vinyl -- this brings back a lot of memories (life before a mortgage and my staggering neuroses) -- cheers mate!
