1. Van Hunt - If I Take You Home (Upon...) - never heard this or heard of this. Much different opening than the other mixes I've heard so far which is good. Makes me want to make sweet sweet love. 3/5.
2. Chic - Good Times - I believe they play this in a TravelInn commercial or something like that which is an instant point deduction. I mean it has a nice beat but this isn't really my thing as it doesn't make me want to make sweet sweet love. 2/5.
3. Bill Withers - Use Me - never heard this either...I'm sensing a trend. I like the song title and lyrics on this one. Less of a disco feel than the last song which is positive. I'm kind of back to the love making. 3/5.
4. Roxy Music - Take a Chance With Me - I like Roxy Music even though the production sure doesn't hold up all that well. This song sure takes a long time to get going. But, I like it. 3/5.
5. Nirvana - Love Buzz - never heard this one. Nice opening bass. This is a really great song - Nirvana should have done more shit like this. 4/5.
6. The Jam - Start! - never really listened to The Jam at all even though obner drools all over them most of the time. I don't get it. This is ok I guess but don't see reason for all the hype. 2/5.
7. Count Five - Psychotic Reaction - never heard this or of this. Harmonica...good sign. I like the way this starts. Makes me tap my foot (out of rhythm). Sounds like something from a Wes Anderson movie soundtrack. Very nice. 4/5.
8. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy - not much to say about this. 5/5.
9. Dead Kennedys - Police Truck - never listened to this band at all. I like beating up drunks, though. I've never been a big punk guy but this is listenable. 2/5.
10. Killing Joke - Eighties - I'm pretty sure I've heard this somewhere but not sure where. Not too bad. 2/5.
11. Bad Brains - I Against I - again, another band I've never really listened to. Damn this is fast. Its making me dizzy. Make it stop. 1/5.
12. Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr - stigmata martyr eh... Just based on the song title I could guess what this would sound like. Not my cup o' tea. This mix is going off the rails. 1/5.
13. Fugazi - Bad Mouth - I've always been a Fugazi naysayer but hey this isnt terrible. Not good either. 2/5.
14. Depeche Mode - Useless I've always kind of liked DM but never bought any of their albums. I always thought those DM fans were just weird. But hey, the mix is back on the rails. I like this pretty well. 2+/5.
15. Sinead O'Connor - Red Football - never heard this song but I like it. Awesome voice. This is what I'm talking about. I should probably get some Sine-Aid. 4/5.
16. Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire - So there was a Concrete Blond song on someone else's mix. I like this one better. Nice lyrics too...I feel like drinking. 4/5.
17. Blondie - I Know But I Don't Know - Man, there are so few songs on this mix that I've ever heard which is cool. This is a good song. 3/5.
18. Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille - I've heard this somewhere. It's not the kind of thng I'd listen to again. I can see why people might like it. I'm not those people. 1/5.
19. The B-52's - Lava - cool song. A Krakatoa reference is always nice. Pretty subtle ejaculation metaphor. 3/5.
20. Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City - these guys are yelling at me. nice lyrics - again make me want to drink...and screw. I like the guitars - good pick. Need more shit like this. 3/5.
21. Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion - damnit...one song too many. 1/5.

cd 2

22. R.E.M. - Camera - A great choice and nice way to start off the mix. Not one of my absolute favorite REM songs, but great nonetheless. 4/5.
23. Andrew Hyra and Kristian Bush - I Don't Know Much - Never heard or heard of this. Its ok and I'm generally a sucker for this type of thing but I'm not really feeling this plus it goes on a little too long. 2/5.
24. Let's Active - Crows on a Phone Line - another new one. I like this one a little less than the last one. 2/5.
25. Luka Bloom - The Acoustic Motorbike - interesting. I think he just said something about a dolphin. I can see why you like this - i guess its about bicycling. You really took this theme to heart. 2/5.
26. U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart - well, well, a U2 sighting. I thought about putting a U2 song on my mix, perhaps something off of Unforgettable Fire, maybe something else, but didn't do it. I think you chose a good one - not too well known but still good. I've always liked this tune. 4/5.
27. Archer Prewitt - Wilderness - I have an Archer Prewitt album and never, ever listen to it. Not really sure why. Maybe because it seems kind of cold. It just doesn't engage me. 2/5.
28. The Cure - Like Cockatoos - I also had a Cure song on my mix for awhile then took it off. They have so many good songs its hard to decide on one. I thought 10:15, In Between Days, etc. but they all felt overplayed. I've never been a big fan of this song, though. 2/5.
29. Bauhaus - Mask - Dana, I like you, you are a great person. However, I just think our music taste is very dissimilar. You are going to fucking hate my mix. 1/5.
30. Duran Duran - Palomino - I'm not one of those big anti-Duran Duran people. I think they are enjoyable. This is a pretty cool song - haven't heard it before. 3/5.
31. Turin Brakes - Emergency 72 - never heard this band. This mix is picking up a bit. This is pretty good. 3/5.
32. David Bowie - Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud - getting a lot of Bowie exposure lately. Great song. Bowie has a really cool voice even if I have no idea wtf he is talking about. 3/5.
33. Scissor Sisters - The Other Side - I'm not one of those Scissor Sisters haters. I like at least 10 per cent of their stuff. This is ok. 2+/5.
34. David Gray - As I'm Leaving - I'll defend David Gray. His first few albums are pretty damn good and this is one of my favorites. 4/5.
35. James Angell - Call Off the War - if I had to choose war or this song, I choose WAR. 1/5.
36. Crowded House - You're Not the Girl You Think You Are - I love Crowded House. One of the most underrated bands ever. Just the best melody and vocals this side of - well - everything. Great tune. 4/5.
37. Peter Murphy - Cascade - I was about to give this a one then litsened a bit more and hey, maybe I like this a little bit. Some Peter Gabriel shit going on here. I really hate the part where he just talks. 2-/5.

Nice job putting together a ton of styles and bands I didn't know. I liked the first mix better than the second mix. Gave me quite a few new bands to look into.

Thanks Rodney... you know, you might be surprised... I might *not* hate your mix. Hey, different strokes for different folks, and this was about ME. If you even pulled one song from it that made an impact, then that's all that matters.

If I Take You Home, Will You Respect Me in the Morning - A dnorwood mix in two parts

1. Van Hunt - If I Take You Home (Upon...) – Hmm, nice way to kick things off. I’m not familiar with the artist or this song. Kind of a cool theme title, too, by the way. Anyway, this is got a slinky, sexy vibe that is contrasting rather sharply at the moment with my existing mood and my decaf coffee. However, the groove is working its way into my brain. Apparently the artist grew up emulating the pimp lifestyle of his father. I choose to take that literally as opposed to the current, rather stupid, use of that word as an adjective for everything from clothes to peanut butter. This is a great opening song. 3.5/5

2. Chic - Good Times – Okay, full disclosure time. I don’t hate disco, particularly disco that sounds like this. This, of course, was widely sampled on ‘Rapper’s Delight’ and, in my mind, one of the greatest songs of all time ‘The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel’. This is a fantastic song and I’m enjoying here it, even though it’s way too fucking early to be playing something this groovy. I choose not to be a drag. These are the good times. 4.5/5

3. Bill Withers - Use Me – I really, really love this song. I always have. This tune is pure cocaine. 5/5

4. Roxy Music - Take a Chance With Me - Kind of a weird segue, to be honest. For that first minute and a half, I started wondering if I was listening to Black Sabbath without the heavy. I’ve never really heard Roxy Music before Radcliffe set me up with their debut album. I do enjoy Bryan Ferry’s voice, but I still don’t understand the fascination that many have with them. It’s not terrible by any means, but doesn’t really touch me with that ‘wow’ stick. I suspect it is a relative to a certain time period. 2/5

5. Nirvana - Love Buzz – Nice touch here. I like the early Nirvana stuff and haven’t heard the songs on Bleach in a long while. I can’t believe Kurt’s voice here; I don’t think I’d have recognized this immediately, to be perfectly honest. I love Nirvana, then and now. 3.5/5

6. The Jam - Start! – I’m a fairly big fan of this band. In contrast to Roxy Music, for instance, when I first heard the Jam I could see why this excited people. This song is fucking great with killer bass line. I love the ‘If I never, ever see you’ bridge. And another great thing about this song, it’s short too. I’m a big fan of snappy tunes like this. (When I finish this mix review, the very first thing I’m putting on is The Jam) 4.5/5

7. Count Five - Psychotic Reaction – Ahhh, more good stuff. This is another great track. (To be honest, my mood is vastly improved 7 songs in, I’m really feeling this and it can’t be the coffee because it’s decaf). I don’t know what more anyone can say about this song. It’s just great rock and roll. I’m trying to remember the first time I heard this and I can’t at the moment. Maybe I’ve always heard it. Think about that. 5/5

8. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy – My mood has now flip flopped like some shit-heel politician. This song is single-handedly responsible. This fucking song is better than the most potent strain of Zoloft squeezed from the very best trees of the Amazon owned by Pfizer. They can’t patent this, though. 5/5

9. Dead Kennedys - Police Truck - I’ve only heard a few songs by this band. I borrowed Bedtime for Democracy from a friend when I was in grade 9 and I shut it off. I thought it was pure crap. Had I borrowed Give Me Convenience.. I would NOT have shut it off and who knows where I would be today? Maybe I’d be skinny from all the speed. 4/5

10. Killing Joke - Eighties – Awesome! AAAAAHH EIGHTIES!!! I really dig this song. With it’s ‘Come As You Are’ intro and perfect inclusion in the party scene from “Weird Science” this song makes me want to hop around the apartment. Of course I’d be all alone and would look quite the fool. And frankly I don’t have the energy right now, but I will get trashed tomorrow and put this song on full blast. And then, I promise to hop around. 5/5

11. Bad Brains - I Against I – This is one band I’ve heard of but never listened to, however, they are supposedly one of the most important bands in American Hardcore. According to that recent documentary, they ‘changed music’. With that hyperbole aside, I can safely say that this isn’t a bad tune at all. I generally have an extremely negative opinion of hardcore music, particularly their fans. I get that ‘punk changed your life’, now shut up. That being said, I probably would have listened to this in early high school. 3.5/5

12. Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr - Another kind of weird segue in terms of tone, but not years, I suspect. I think the latter two bands co-existed in the early 80s. I was aware of them, but never heard anything outside of ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’. Anyway, this is kind of dark right out of the gate and I see why folks really got into these guys. I like Peter Murphy’s voice, but to be honest, this song sounded dreadful to me. I don’t know if he was shouting Latin phrases or some variation of backwards speak, but I really wanted him to shut the fuck up. The saving grace of this song was at minute 3.41. 0.5/5

13. Fugazi - Bad Mouth - This is something I can appreciate. Never heard much in the way of Fugazi either, although my music magazines always yakked about them. I wish this song would have kicked in and actually started though. I was waiting for something that never delivered. Kind of like...life? Heyyy, maybe that's the hook. 1/5

14. Depeche Mode - Useless This is Depeche Mode??! This is pretty good, I’m not familiar with this song at all. With the prominent guitar, I’m guessing this is latter day period (EDIT, yep 1997). I’ve got a bunch of DM albums, that still get a decent amount of play, but I don’t think I’ve heard anything past Violater. Based on this song I’d be interested in checking out some more. 3/5

15. Sinead O'Connor - Red Football - Wow. I’ve never heard this song before. I really love this first two Sinead albums, but she lost me after her caberet album. She’s still sounds pretty great here. I actually miss Sinead, she had so much promise. Then she went bucky. Too bad. 3/5

16. Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire - WHOA. I don’t know this song and I consider myself a monster Concrete Blonde fan. I see that it’s on the Still in Hollywood compilation. Fuck, I had in my mind that it was like a greatest hits compendium and I never even bothered. I’ve got all their albums and even Johnette’s spin-off bands Pretty & Twisted and Vowel Movment. Anyway, this song is tremendous. This sounds like it might be an outtake from the Walking in London period. It’s got an excellent shuffle to it and my god does she sound great here. I love her. 5/5

17. Blondie - I Know But I Don't Know - I love Blondie. This is such a good song, and couples greatly with the previous track. I’ve actually never put the similarities this close together, but wow. This has such a great groove. 4/5

18. Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille - Full disclosure, part II. The Later Years: I have a fondness for the French electro/disco pop, stuff like Air, Mirwais, Daft Punk, rhinoceros, and Dmitri from Paris. Nice song. 3.5/5

19. The B-52's - Lava - I’ve never been a huge fan and don’t own a single album but I’ve actually always enjoyed their songs when I hear them, even during the Cosmic Thing era when one particular song was threatening to drive an entire world mad. This song is no exception, although it did push it a bit by going nearly 5 min in length. 3/5

20. Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City - I was this close to putting a SCotS song on my mix too. I can’t remember which one, but it was from a DGC compilation. Anyway, this is really great. Your choice was better than mine. This is toe-tappingly awesome actually and by the end I’m singing along. And the best part?! 2 min, 34 seconds long. Bee-yoo-tee-full. 4.5/5

21. Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion - Hey, this I like. Good chuggin’ groove going here. I’d never really listened to this band, they fell between the crack somehow. This is basically what the Tragically Hip sounds like, so I have to like it. 3.5/5

cd 2

22. R.E.M. - Camera – Always a good choice, from any era, in my opinion (save for the last couple of albums). This song is not one of my favourites, to be perfectly honest. It just never picks up, not necessarily in tempo, but just in emotion or soul. Is it possible he’s been a dead this whole time and is actually a zombie? 2/5

23. Andrew Hyra and Kristian Bush – I Don’t Know Much – Not familiar with these guys at all. This is pretty good overall. Not too spectacular, but I don’t know if it should be. Based on the lyrics and music I feel I should be touched by the emotion, but I’m not. 2/5

24. Let's Active - Crows on a Phone Line - I’ve heard of these guys, usually mentioned in the same sentence as REM, Athens and jangle. This is pleasant, but a bit unremarkable. Basically, I don’t know where they’re going in the song. There’s not a spot here that hooks me in, and I don’t necessarily mean a catchy chorus. 2/5

25. Luka Bloom - The Acoustic Motorbike - Now this song hooks me less than 30 seconds. It did what the previous track couldn’t do in nearly 4 min. It’s kind of a weird Irish folk-hip hop. I’d be interested in hearing more of this. 3/5

26. U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart - Wow, I’ve only heard a bit of early U2. And by a bit, I mean hearing this album about 3 years ago. Outside of that, I’m obviously quite naïve regarding their pre-Joshua stuff. It’s hard to believe that this is the same band that crafted ‘Vertigo’, isn’t it? I mean, it’s qualitatively a totally different band, for better or worse. This song is pretty great, actually despite the fact it’s over 8 min long. 3.5/5

27. Archer Prewitt - Wilderness - Another artist I’ve heard of, but never listened to previous to this song. I think there was quite a bit of board buzz about him, but I can’t remember when. Either way, I like this a lot. My nearly universal rule is that if there are handclaps, I will like it. This definitely qualifies 3.5/5

28. The Cure - Like Cockatoos - Never been much of a Cure fan, mainly due to lack of exposure. I simply didn’t hang around people who listened to this band. In the towns I grew up in, if there were Cure fans, I’m sure they had already killed themselves long before I could ask to borrow Staring at the Sea. That being said, I don’t hate this song, but it’s didn’t do much for me. 2/5

29. Bauhaus - Mask - Like my own mix, I doubled on a few artists that were important to me. I see you have done the same. I’m not going to comment on this one, out of respect. 1/5

30. Duran Duran - Palomino - I’m an acknowledged fan of this band, I had all the albums back then. I only have Decade in my collection now (although I’m still looking for Notorious on cd). I’ve never even heard this song before, so I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. 4/5

31. Turin Brakes - Emergency 72 - I can’t believe it’s a guy singing, first off. That’s kind of freaking me out. Anyway, I rather like this song. It’s kind of sexy, actually, despite the strange voiced ‘man’ singing. So far, this is a standout track for me on cd2. 4.5/5

32. David Bowie - Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud - I’m a fairly big Bowie fan, but I’ve never heard Space Oddity mainly because I’ve never liked the title track. However, the handclapping has me liking this song and I see I’ve thrown the bowie out with the bathwater again. I’ll make a point of checking out the whole album now. 4/5

33. Scissor Sisters - The Other Side - Full Disclose, part III, the present: I enjoy the Scissor Sisters, quite a lot sometimes. I think it's great pop music. This isn’t one of my favourites off the new album, because if I’m listening to them, I want the crazy, over-the-top shit, like ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ or ‘Filthy Gorgeous’. If I’m gonna be ghey, I’m going all the way, but don’t hold me to that. 4/5

34. David Gray - As I'm Leaving - I’m not familiar with a lot of his work, but this is really, really nice. I’m very impressed by this. This could be a great country song. Seriously. If I heard a pedal-steel right now I’d be in heaven. I clearly need to check out a few more David Grey songs. 4.5/5

35. James Angell - Call Off the War - Never heard of this dude, but apparently he’s like a musical Unabomber, living in the woods after being ripped a new one by the music industry. I respect the guy’s decision to persevere in the face of adversity and personal defeat, but maybe it’s for the best? This isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but damn it’s just not that great. And it’s nearly 6 min long. 1.5/5

36. Crowded House - You're Not the Girl You Think You Are – Wow, nice addition here. I haven’t heard a lot of Crowded House, but this is a welcome surprise. There’s something to be said for a simple song like this, although it might be contrast enhancement compared with the previous track. 3/5

37. Peter Murphy - Cascade - Okay, it’s not Bauhaus, for that it’s immediately more welcome in mind. I actually had a friend in high school who played Deep constantly in his car. I mean this guy was a Beatles/Led Zep fan, a real classic rock kind of guy, but something in that Peter Murphy album resonated with him. This is far more pleasant than hearing his former band, but isn’t doing much for me, I’m afraid. 2/5

----------------------

Wow, Dana thanks for the effort that went into this Herculean task. Considering the variety in your mix I’d imagine sequencing must have been a bitch. I definitely get a sense of your musical history over the years, and based on this mix I think I'd feel more positive recommending certain bands for you to check out. Overall, I think it’s clear that I was a much bigger fan of disc 1 than disc 2, which just never really worked for me, despite there being several songs I really enjoyed. It’s possible that these may grow on me further after a few more listens, but overall, I’ll be keeping Disc 1 out and near my stereo, (with a couple of tracks programmed out ;). )

My overall rating: 8.1/10 and 6.1/10

hey thanks, Chas... glad you found some stuff you liked... to respond to some of your comments:

Yeah, the Roxy takes a bit of time to kick in, and in retrospect, I probably should have put that song elsewhere. But I'm not sure where I would have put it, as it seems to be a "one of these is not like the others" kind of song.

Killing Joke? Drunken dancing? You must send a photo. ;)

Stigmata Martyr - yes, he is singing in Latin:
In nomine patri et filii et spiriti sanctum
It's pretty dark, so I get why some people don't like them. It's so dark and freaky, well, it's kinda like a car accident to me, and once you listen to the full repertoire, it actually grows on you. Plus there are some huge Bowie/Pink Floyd influences on Bauhaus, if you take the time to listen for them.

Depeche Mode's "Ultra" album is excellent. Highly recommended imo.

Part of the reason I picked that particular R.E.M. song, not only because it's one of my favorites, is BECAUSE it lulls. It's lazy, like a hot Georgia summer night, sitting on the back porch, listening to the cicadas. And it's a pretty beautiful sentiment, considering it's about having a secret crush on someone.

The Luka Bloom song came off his album "The Acoustic Motorbike" which I think came out in 92. The sole reason I bought that album to begin with is his cheeky but beautifully Irish cover of LL Cool J's "I Need Love." It's so amazing!

I'm really surprised both you and Rodney hated the James Angell. Hmmm... I didn't realize I'd be that far off the mark with him. Perhaps seeing him perform live or hearing the album in its entirety makes a diff.

Anyhow, I appreciate you taking the time to review. Thank you!

edit: also, Chas, I would definitely pick up that concrete blonde album... it's a lot of live versions, b-sides, previous cuts, etc. And yeah, I totally hear the comparisons to "Walking in London," which reminds me, I haven't listened to that album in ages.

If I Take You Home, Will You Respect Me in the Morning - A dnorwood mix in two parts

1. Van Hunt - If I Take You Home (Upon...) Not really my cuppa, sounds like it would be the best thing Prince has done, had it been Prince.

2. Chic - Good Times S'all right, you can really see the impact it had on The Clash.

3. Bill Withers - Use Me I didn't get page one of the playlist and your commentary, but the opening three tracks are kind of head-scratchers. This is decent, but on first listen, I was struggling to figure out where this mix was going.

4. Roxy Music - Take a Chance With Me Blissful--and somewhat daring on a mix, since this album works so well as a whole. There's a real danger that the songs lose something when pulled out of context--this one works.

5. Nirvana - Love Buzz Nifty early single...whatever happened to these guys?

6. The Jam - Start! Not much to add here, the Jam are one of my all-time faves.

7. Count Five - Psychotic Reaction Loves me some Nuggets.

8. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy Possibly the most effective track on the mix, love it.

9. Dead Kennedys - Police Truck I had this on an early draft of my mix. I used to recite the lyrics to this song (among others of the early eighties) with a fellow waiter during one of my summer jobs in high school.

10. Killing Joke - Eighties It's a shame these guys didn't write more pop songs, because this is classic.

11. Bad Brains - I Against I Not generally a big fan of U.S. hardcore, but Bad Brains were one of the best. Dig it.

12. Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr One of the best from their killer debut. Always loved David J's bass-work here.

13. Fugazi - Bad Mouth This one's all right, not mind-blowing, though.

14. Depeche Mode - Useless Wow, this song opened up with promise--then they turned it into a Depeche Mode song. Too bad, really.

15. Sinead O'Connor - Red Football Blech.

16. Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire Did Andy Prieboy have a hand in this song? It's got his prints all over the sound and story. Tres chouette.

17. Blondie - I Know But I Don't Know Solid.

18. Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille Cute, but not something I'd want to hear frequently.

19. The B-52's - Lava This is my favorite song from their debut...by a longshot, and their debut is in my Listmania top ten.

20. Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City :rawk:

21. Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion Whoah, this is a lot nastier than I remeber Drivin' 'n Cryin' sounding. I may have to revisit this band.

cd 2--cd 2 was really a 180 turn from disc one. Whereas I like almost everything on disc 1, there's not much that strikes me on disc 2. Maybe because it's so subdued and introvert...err...spected.

22. R.E.M. - Camera I've really lost my appetite for these guys over the last 20 years.

23. Andrew Hyra and Kristian Bush – I Don’t Know Much Kind of mopey, and not as charming as Iron and Wine.

24. Let's Active - Crows on a Phone Line I was never able to "get into" these guys, despite the ravings of all of my friends. But then again, "all of my friends" were tireless REM apologists.

25. Luka Bloom - The Acoustic Motorbike Best song on disc 2. Love it.

26. U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart I think I put Boy on my Listmania, there's not a weak track on it. Not sure that this one works well on a mix, but it certainly fits the mood of this disc. Nice inclusion.

27. Archer Prewitt - Wilderness Next...

28. The Cure - Like Cockatoos At least it's not a Smiths tune. Not a big Cure fan here.

29. Bauhaus - Mask Mask is the Bauhaus record I play the least, this one works given Disc 2's mood/context. Somehow The Passion Of Lovers would seem out of place here.

30. Duran Duran - Palomino Man, they sound a lot like Polaroids-era Japan.

31. Turin Brakes - Emergency 72 Not my cuppa.

32. David Bowie - Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud Wonderful song, from a wonderful record, quite possibly Bowie's best.

33. Scissor Sisters - The Other Side Not a fan.

34. David Gray - As I'm Leaving See above.

35. James Angell - Call Off the War See above the above.

36. Crowded House - You're Not the Girl You Think You Are Is it me? Am I the only one on the planet that really likes Split Enz but wants nothing to do with Crowded House?

37. Peter Murphy - Cascade Pleasant, and well written. Definitely doesn't have the fire/excitement that flows through his first three solo efforts--I guess that's why Deep is the last release of his that I own.
----------------------
Awesome, all around. Two discs is no easy task, and I'm not sure that I could compile two. Thanks for the work that went into it, and sharing this with us.

Cheers!

If I Take You Home, Will You Respect Me in the Morning - A dnorwood mix in two parts

Disc 1
1. Van Hunt - If I Take You Home (Upon...) – Groovy in a timeless sort of way. Definitely comes across as a tad repetitive and a bit long. Just not hitting me right. 2/5
2. Chic - Good Times – This song was a hit when I was a little kid, and hearing it brings back a lot of cool “just discovering music” memories. Admittedly, I’m pretty damn anti-disco. That said, watching my wife dance with my three year old son in the next room while I spun this mix for the first time, I was reminded that tracks like this were designed to get people on the damn dance floor. And that it does quite successfully. 4/5
3. Bill Withers - Use Me – Now this I dig…quite a bit. 4/5
4. Roxy Music - Take a Chance With Me – A girlfriend introduced me to Avalon during college, and while I own it, I rarely give it a spin. It’s aged a bit for me, but the nostalgia it resurrects is undeniable. 4/5
5. Nirvana - Love Buzz – Cool little number and one of my faves off of Bleach. 3/5
6. The Jam - Start! – Not one of my faves, but damn, I love The Jam... 4/5
7. Count Five - Psychotic Reaction – Love the beginning of this tune, but when the pace doubles, it takes a turn for the worse. I’ll continue to revisit the song, but those instrumental sections are a brutal listen. 3/5
8. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy – The back-up singers and maracas get me every damn time. 5/5
9. Dead Kennedys - Police Truck – Love the DKs but not big on this tune. Never realized how “surfy” it sounds - saves it for me… 2.5/5
10. Killing Joke - Eighties – Love the beginning of this song and appreciate it for the reasons you mention in your notes. Unfortunately, it’s just too repetitive, and I think I’ve heard it just too many times. 2/5
11. Bad Brains - I Against I – Yeah, now we’re talking. This cd was on heavy rotation my senior year in college. The drummer is a damn machine. 4/5
12. Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr – Murphy had “the dark” in him this early on, but the band just couldn’t pull it off musically. Quite intense but cringe-inducing at times. 2/5
13. Fugazi - Bad Mouth – This cd came out the Summer I referenced in my liner notes. IMO, Fugazi could do no wrong in the early 90s. 5/5
14. Depeche Mode - Useless – I either love or despise Depeche Mode tracks. Can’t say I hate this (it’s got a solid groove that runs steadily throughout the song), but it’s not a keeper. 2/5
15. Sinead O'Connor - Red Football – I, too, have never heard this particular track, but I like it quite a bit. I can’t help but wonder where her career could have gone had she not made some of the choices she did. The last 40 seconds cost this one half a point. 4/5
16. Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire – Yet another Concrete Blonde track that I just can’t get into at all. 1/5
17. Blondie - I Know But I Don't Know – Interesting stuff, Dana. Hadn’t heard this one before, and it already feels like a grower. 3.5/5
18. Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille – Always liked this hip little track and hadn’t heard it in years. 3/5
19. The B-52's - Lava – Run o’ the mill B-52’s – even their mediocre tracks are catchy. 3/5.
20. Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City – You’re kidding me, right? I’ve seen SCOTS twice in the past three months. Definitely a can’t miss live, and this tune always brings it. 5/5
21. Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion – Quite the adjustment from your damn fine run from tracks 17-20. I listened to quite a bit of Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ back in the day but always preferred Mystery Road over Whisper…. 2/5

Disc 2
22. R.E.M. - Camera – R.E.M. defined my musical tastes between, say, ‘85 and ’89. I was a devout follower, worshipping all that they released until (but not including) Document and following them on tour throughout the Southeast on several occasions. This is one of my favorites…the slow build, Mills’ barely noticeable background vocals during the chorus, and the way Stipe changes key and holds notes throughout the last verse. Some of their earliest work still gives me chills. 5/5.
23. Andrew Hyra and Kristian Bush - I Don't Know Much – After many listens, this track has failed to grow on me. I find myself waiting and wanting for something more to occur, but it’s just more of the same - repetitive lyrically and musically. 2/5.
24. Let's Active - Crows on a Phone Line – Damn, Dana – I’m sensing that our musical tastes were very similar during the time period I mentioned above. As a fan of most things Athens musically during the late 80’s, I was very familiar with Let's Active and saw them open for R.E.M. a handful of times. This, too, is one my favorite tracks, and the Cypress/Afoot combo on cd is one of the best buys on the market today. It’s nice to know that there are other Let’s Active fans on board. 5/5.
25. Luka Bloom - The Acoustic Motorbike – Not something I’d listen to regularly, but I’m sure it fits the bill while you’re out riding. 2/5.
26. U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart – God, I used to love some of the deeper tracks on early U2 releases. There’s an underlying tension and passion in both of these tracks, and it’s amazing how well one segues into the other. Thanks for including. 5/5.
27. Archer Prewitt - Wilderness - I can’t recall where I’ve heard his name, but I’m not familiar with any of his material. I love the mellow beginning, but when the handclaps and additional instruments kick in, the song loses some of its strength. 2.5/5.
28. The Cure - Like Cockatoos – While this hasn’t traditionally been one of my favorite Cure tracks, I can’t deny the creativity that surrounds it. I usually skip it when spinning Kiss Me…, but having to review it for your mix forced me to sit and listen to it intently. I now find everything about it quite intriguing (lyrics, arrangement, sounds effects, etc.). 4/5.
29. Bauhaus - Mask – Dark and twisted. Yup, the last 2 minutes do save the song and seem to point at instrumentation that Murphy would use more prevalently on future solo releases. 3/5.
30. Duran Duran - Palomino – I really don’t mind Duran Duran, but this particular track doesn’t do a damn thing for me. I’ve begun skipping it on repeat listens. 2/5.
31. Turin Brakes - Emergency 72 – The song does build nicely, but there’s simply not enough here to keep my interest. 2/5.
32. David Bowie - Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud – Bizarre and indecipherable? Certainly. A classic? Yup. Not something I listen to every time I spin your disc, but it’s nice to know it’s here when I need it. 3/5.
33. Scissor Sisters - The Other Side – Not too damn shabby – actually has a mellow 70’s feel to it and has gotten better with repeated listens. 4.5/5.
34. David Gray - As I'm Leaving – Hadn’t heard this particular track before and have come to really enjoy it. Few people can pull tracks like this off as consistently as David Gray. 3.5/5.
35. James Angell - Call Off the War – Yeah, this isn’t something I want to listen to again. 1/5.
36. Crowded House - You're Not the Girl You Think You Are
– Hard to deny the talent in this band. Very melodic, and while I generally prefer the more upbeat CH, this is pretty good. 3/5.
37. Peter Murphy - Cascade – Candidly, I’ve struggled to get into post-Deep Murphy. This is good but runs on a bit long. I think “The Scarlet Thing In You” is one of the lone tracks on Cascade that I can listen to and enjoy on a regular basis. 2.5/5.

Summary
As I mentioned before, I'm quite amazed (both by your review of my mix and some of the tracks you've opted to include here) by some of the similarities in our musical tastes. The lion's share of bands you included in "The South" section of the mix were and continue to be personal faves of mine. I'm scoring these mixes a 3.5/5 and attribute some of the lower scores to your including bands with whom I'm not at all familiar and may require repeated listens to appreciate. All in all, a great listen.

Thanks for the reviews, guys...

edit: now for a more comprehensive response... was feeling lethargic yesterday...

Billz: sorry the first page of the notes didn't make it... I did all of this kinda quickly on a weekend as far as putting all the packaging together, so I do apologize. Not sure it would have made much difference for you, but I can always pm you the first page.

also, thank GOD someone else likes my Stigmata Martyr track... I don't get y'all sometimes! ;)

re: Andy Prieboy on "100 Games," I think you are correct, sir.

Glad you liked the Luka tune... it's quite catchy, I think.

I'll take your Japan/Duran comparison as a compliment, har har.

bgl3:

re: Sinead O'Connor, I've thought the same thing. I think she has a lovely voice, and I really miss the fire from "The Lion and the Cobra." She had an amazing opportunity and squandered it big time. I guess not everyone is meant for worldwide stardom. I've heard her last album (the reggae one); it's alright, but not a favorite. Her "Sean Nos Nua" album is pretty good, and it's traditional Irish tunes. She's one of those people though... no matter what crap she puts out, I'm probably going to buy it.

Archer Prewitt-- you don't like handclaps??? For shame! ;)

Bauhaus/Mask- yes, those last two minutes are pure Daniel Ash. You hear it a lot in L&R songs like "Saudade" and "American Dream."

I don't know if any of you reviewers cared to note or not... but disc 2 seems to be more of an "introspective d" effort, so I can see why it perhaps didn't resonate with all of you. But anyhow, I appreciate your comments, and I'm glad you all found at least one thing you like.

If I Take You home, Will You Respect Me in the Morning

The Groove

1) Van Hunt - If I Take You Home - Hmmm...funky...a little bit of Prince...little bit of Lenny...I like the phaser on the guitar. Good opener.
7/10

2) Chic - Good Times - I'm pretty well acquainted with this, and I don't even own it. How can one not like it?
7/10

3) Bill Withers - Use Me - Funky, smooth, soulfull, and propelled by a badass electric piano line.
8/10

4) Roxy Music - Take a Chance on Me - This is awesome. I'm a complete sucker for this kind of thing. A kissin' cousin to "More Than This." Never heard this one before, and I actually have a CD-R of Avalon. Man.
9.5/10

5) Nirvana - Love Buzz - I really like Nirvana's Nevermind and In Utero. This is Ok, but doesn't make me feel as if I missed out on Bleach.
6/10

6) The Jam - Start! - Kick out the style, bring back the jam!
8/10

7) Count Five - Psychotic Reaction - Kinda Kinks-y. This caught on with me pretty fast.
8.5/10

8 ) T. Rex - 20th Century Boy - Aside from Electric Warrior, there's a shortage of T Rex in my library. I need to work on that.
8/10

The Anger

9) Dead Kennedys - Police Truck - We're on a roll here. Love the combo of punk and surf guitar licks.
8.5/10

10) Killing Joke - Eighties - The only Killing Joke CD I have is Night Time. When I first heard this a couple of years ago I thought "come as you are." "Love Like Blood" will always be my favorite, but this ain't bad, even if it is a bit repetitive.
7/10

11) Bad Brains - I Against I - They've got chops for sure, but I'm not sure how often I'd listen to this. Didn't they eventually become more reggae based?
6/10

12) Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr - They played this song live at Coachella, and that syncopated squawky guitar lick that Ash does towards the end of the song was getting a lot raised eyebrows from the Coldplay fans I'm sure. That bassline is pretty evil. I really do take my Bauhaus in moderation lately...especially with the random shouting and spoken word at the end.
7/10

13) Fugazi - Bad Mouth - So this is the origin of emo? Doesn't sound that emo to me, but I can't say I am all that into it.
5/10

14) Depeche Mode - Useless - I'm kind of biased. I've liked them since I was 15. One of my favorite songs by them, and easily my favorite off of Ultra.
9.5/10

The Woman

15) Sinead O'Connor - Red Football - Never heard this one. This is good. She really has been overlooked in the realm of female vocalists.
8/10

16) Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire - Hmmm...2nd mix that deemed Concrete Blonde worthy of inclusion. Dig the buzzy guitar sound they used.
7/10

17) Blondie - I Know but I Don't Know - A punkier side of Blondie. Cool.
7/10

18 ) Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille - I was indifferent to this at first, but it's kind of fun and well layered despite it's repetitive feel. Clever use of samples. If this has never been the soundtrack for a runway presentation, I'd be very surprised.
8/10

The South

19) The B-52s - Lava - I've never felt I've been missing out on the B-52s, but this is enjoyable. Kate's a cool singer. I never felt that guy vocalist added much.
6/10

20) Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City - Man this needs to be in The Groove section.
8/10

21) Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion - When I DJ'd for my college radio station back in 1994, they had me playing a song by these guys that always put me to sleep, so this is a pleasant surprise.
7/10

22) R.E.M. - Camera - I like R.E.M. but I haven't managed to get into this as of the time I am writing this review. But R.E.M. songs have been known to sneak up on me in the past. That 15 or so second jam at the tail end of the track was an interesting touch. The first 2 spins kept fooling me into thinking I was listening to the next track.
5.5/10

23) Andrew Hyra and Kristian Bush - I Don't Know Much - Weird....I've heard a peppier version of this. Is this a cover? A friend of mine in college liked a band that did this song. May be the same band. I don't know. It's OK.
6/10

24) Let's Active - Crows on a Phone Line - I've kind of kept my ear open for these guys. I'm not particularly reeled in by this, but I did like the song you put by them on the last mix (or at least I think that was you).
6.5/10

The Self-Awareness

25) Luka Bloom - The Acoustic Motorbike - That's some consisently fast strumming. This one gets better with each listen. Sounds really good loud.
8.5/10

26) U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart - I consider myself a big U2 fan for the most part, but I actually do not own Boy. I don't know why. Never got around to it. I guess because I didn't really get into October like I did War, Joshua Tree (which I am really tired of), Achtung Baby, or Pop. I don't recall ever hearing this song before. It's quality U2 and certainly better than anything off of Atomic Stinkbomb.
7/10

27) Archer Prewitt - Wilderness - Reminds me a bit of Cat Stevens.
7/10

28 ) The Cure - Like Cockatoos - One of the stand out moments on a rather long album (Kiss MeX3, not this mix ;) )
8/10

29) Bauhaus - Mask - I like a lot of Bauhaus. I'm not real crazy about this one. I'm more of a "Double Dare," "Passion of Lovers," "Silent Hedges," or "Kick in the Eye" guy.
5.5/10

30) Duran Duran - Palomino - Waddya know....a Duran Duran song I wasn't familiar with. And I actually consider myself a big fan. This is good.
7.5/10

31) Turin Brakes - Emergency 72 - I have this CD but haven't listened to it much. This is 1 of 2 songs I really like on it.
7.5/10

32) David Bowie - Wild-Eyed Boy from Freecloud - I'm more familiar with his quirky, meandering, or rockin' side. So, it's nice to be exposed to a more reflective side.
7/10

33) Scissor Sisters - The Other Side - This just didn't seem like a band that I would like, but this is pleasantly catchy.
7.5/10

34) David Gray - As I'm Leaving - I've liked a couple of songs by him, but I think I might need a little more time with this one.
6/10

35) James Angell - Call off the War - I'm not really big on the song but I like the texture of it. Chaotic and soothing at the same time. Quite a maelstrom of sound.
6.5/10

36) Crowded House - You're Not the Girl You Think You Are - Neil Finn is a quality songwriter. Not one of my favorites of theirs but still a solid effort.
7/10

37) Peter Murphy - Cascade - Peter Murphy is a fine vocalist. I'm not as familiar with his solo material. I have that Wild Birds comp but haven't spun it much. Coolest moment of the song begins at 4:50.
6.5/10

A well balanced mix and quite different from the others. A lot of this is actually not that far removed from what I listen to , although my mix this time around doesn't necessarily reflect that. heh. I think I'll be looking further into the Dead Kennedys and T Rex for sure. And I'll spin my CD-R of Avalon again. If "Take a Chance on Me" is any indication, it's been needlessly neglected in my library. Thanks!

01. Van Hunt - If I Take You Home (Upon...)
“This has got to be the most revolting thing I’ve heard in years. Ewww…ugh, no. CRINGE! This song makes me wanna turn straight, and be like one of those clueless straight men with no fashion sense.”
RATING: 1.5 (…out of 10)

02. Chic - Good Times
“Well, good times indeed. This song seems a bit out of place on this mix, and would have been so much more enjoyable on a dance or disco mix.”
RATING: 5.5

03. Bill Withers - Use Me
“Groovy. It’s OK, I suppose. It’s gone a nice groove but it’d not as soulful as I’d like it to be.”
RATING: 6.0

04. Roxy Music - Take a Chance With Me
“I’m conflicted. I don’t know if I like this song or not. The intro is a little too corny with it’s 80’s style, but the rest of the song redeems itself. I love the vocals, by the way. The mix so far is all over the place.”
RATING: 6.5

05. Nirvana - Love Buzz
“I’m so over Nirvana. It’s not bad but I’m of the opinion that Nirvana songs have not aged well.”
RATING: 5.5

06. The Jam - Start!
“For me, this is where the mix begins. I love this. Very nice. Bouncy, melodic, emotional.”
RATING: 7.5

07. Count Five - Psychotic Reaction
“Whoa, this reminds me of the 13th Floor Elevators. This is how I like my 60’s psych pop, melodic but messy and noisy. This mix has some sort of rhythm finally.”
RATING: 8.0

08. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy
“Yeah. Not one of favorite T. Rex songs, only because I’ve played this song out, unlike some of the more obscure non-singles. Still, top rate stuff. The mix is really hitting a stride now.”
RATING: 8.0

09. Dead Kennedys - Police Truck
“Whoa, is this surf rock? I really like this. Not as hard as some of their stuff. Very enjoyable.”
RATING: 7.0

10. Killing Joke - Eighties
“This screams 80’s, but not in a bad way. I don’t think I’ve heard much Killing Joke. I always under the imperssion that KJ were more of a progressive rock band, similar to Rush. I guess I was wrong.”
RATING: 6.5

11. Bad Brains - I Against I
“Uhhh…this is rough. But it’s still very melodic. I don’t think I can listen to a full album of this sort of thing, but I suppose it’s OK on this mix. It fits perfectly, actually.”
RATING: 6.0

12. Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr
“Interesting. Nice intro. I’m not a fan of the vocals though. They’re too Monster Mashy.”
RATING: 5.5

13. Fugazi - Bad Mouth
“I like this a lot. It would’ve been so much better if there was a chorus. It just didn’t seem to wanna go anywhere. And I hate the spoken word part. Ugh.”
RATING: 6.0

14. Depeche Mode - Useless
“Ahhhh, I’m officially turned on. Something about the vocals that always seems to put me in the mood. Very nice.”
RATING: 6.5

15. Sinead O'Connor - Red Football
“Taken on it’s own, this song is amazing. On this mix, it loses something for me. Some of the lyrics can get a bit annoying. Cohesive is something this mix is not.”
RATING: 7.5

16. Concrete Blonde - 100 Games of Solitaire
“Hmmm…I don’t know. I’m not feeling this. There’s just something that doesn’t fit.”
RATING: 4.5

17. Blondie - I Know But I Don't Know
“Ugh…uhhhh no. I’m not a Blondie fan and this song has not changed my mind. Between this and the Concrete Blonde, something about these songs doesn’t work.”
RATING: 5.0

18. Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille
“OK, now this I can enjoy. Easily, my favorite song on the mix. I can sit in a lounge and listen to this sort of music all day.”
RATING: 9.0

19. The B-52's - Lava
“This song has what Concrete Blonde and Blondie seem to be missing. It just makes sense. Very enjoyable.”
RATING: 8.5

20. Southern Culture on the Skids - Soul City
“A little too funky for me. It reminds me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don’t like it at all.”
RATING: 4.5

21. Drivin' n' Cryin' - Whisper Tames the Lion
“Wow, this is good. I love the vocals. Good old fashioned arena rock. The mix ends on a good note.”
RATING: 7.0

The overall rating may not reflect it, but I didn’t enjoy this mix very much.
It was too all over the place.
I felt like I was listening to a sampler as opposed to a cohesive mix.
Unfortunately, the songs were not strong enough to even make the sampler idea work.
Some strong tracks by T. Rex, Count Five, The B52’s, and especially Dimitri From Paris made part of the mix enjoyable.
Thanks Dana.
NOTE: Review for Disc 2 coming soon.

OVERALL RATING: 6.19 (Music) + 1.00 (Liner Notes) = 7.19 (…out of 10)
