Late review I know, but it was a good one. Some things take time, right? The first few times I listened to it, I tried to listen to it from the perspective you had approached, with your mindset and the actual assemblage of songs. Over time, I tried to see how they worked with my life... some did, some didn't. I also tried to pull out the lyric that sticks in my head (I'm a lyrics girl, if you didn't know).
1. Libertine Takes a Lover - The Parlour Steps - Beautiful tune. I'd never heard of these guys before. Nice way to start it off. "Fading in our romance, eating up the scenery..."
2. You Never Had It - the Magic Numbers - you know what's wild? I was at home one night, in bed, reading my book, listening to a show on a local station called "the Bottom 40" where they play stuff they don't normally play during the day. This song came on. I was shocked. And I kinda smiled because I was all like "yeah, I heard that song, like MONTHS ago" because of this very cd. I really like this one. "Don't be scared of losing something that you never had."
3. Seven Miles - Nikki Sudden - This one didn't really grab me. Sorry, no lyric to cull from this one.
4. Hidden Grove - Slender Means - "I wanna lose myself in the leaves, wanna be reborn into the trees, and lay my head down on the boughs of heaven." Do I ever. This is wonderful.
5. Heretics - Andrew Bird - Andrew is one of those guys that I always enjoy, but I find myself NOT listening to him very often, or at the very least, not reaching for his albums before another one. "Wait just a second now, it's not all that bad, are we not having fun?"
6. Somerville - Pernice Brothers - As much as I love Pernice Bros, good lord, don't they want to make you slit your wrists at times? This is a great tune. However it sounds very unlike what I'm feeling right now. I feel like I'm the girl he sings about in the song. "The penny lost its shine, dirty echoes on the promenade, in rubber flip flop sandals"
7. Baby's Got it in the Genes - Roman Candle - " Living without you, well it ain't so bad, I got a memory of you I didn't know I had, and it's rattling around, being called back out of the deep." Sometimes I feel this way, but it's not always in a nostalgic wistful or sad way. It's just a reminder to me sometimes. Nice tune.
8. Brighter Side - The Revelons - "She was looking at me, I was all she could see, she was my baby." Man, do I know this feeling. I've LIVED this lyric for a long time. The unfortunate thing is when you see only what you want to see, and not what's really there. Not my favorite tune on the mix, but it's good.
9. Hellbent - Largest Living Things - I fucking love this song. Thanks so much for turning me onto this. Is the rest of their output like this??? "I remember my nervous hands wrapped around your thighs." Seems like a silly lyric to pull from the song, but man... sometimes things just feel that way, don't they?
10. Replace You - Jay Bennett - "Whenever we're together, we just make each other feel so lonely." The music itself isn't necessarily my thing, def. have to be in the right mood for it. This song just makes me think of the things we tell ourselves to make it seem like it was no big thing, when we really know in our hearts otherwise.
11. And Never Look Back - Matthew Ryan - another song that really wowed me. This one is amazing. "People and cars on the avenue but I can’t hear a thing, cause I’m looking for you, I’ve been haunted by all that I can’t have"
12. Please Hold My Hand - Kinnie Starr - you know I'm *typically* not into these types of girl singers, but this song was great (I will occasionally delve into this type of music, but it's generally not what I crave by any means). "I know it's hard for you, I'm such a stubborn girl, always wanted my way."
13. Spider's House - Califone - good song, but not my favorite. "familiar peace in the pain, pulling you wrong in soft belief and midnight finish, a violent quiet freeze."
14. Life and Then - the Violet Archers - Another band I've never heard of. This is kinda nice. "Here we sit and stare, pretending we don't care"
15. Mirror - the Beige - "if you could see yourself, oh how happy I'd be, cause you've never been one to judge." I *have* felt this way before. It's futile trying to point out to someone to look at themselves when they're completely unwilling to do so. Excellent tune.
16. Knives of Summertime - Sparklehorse - again, doesn't really work well for my situation, but I can certainly appreciate it. I feel like I should listen to these guys way more often. "And i did swallow stained glass tears, absorbed by the sun for many light years"
17. Dead End - The Format - GREAT tune. "I love it when you talk so much and act like nothing went wrong."
18. When Canyons Ruled the World - Butch Walker - "Like those cheesy 80's movies, she epitomized all things we'd come to know" So true. So ME, right? RIGHT?
19. CBGB's - Syd Straw - "Are you doing what you wanted to, did you follow those intentions through, and all the dreams you had, have any or all of them come true, if they haven't yet I hope they do." Oh man. This one hit me hard. Thanks for making me cry, motherfucker.
Overall it was a solid mix, Rads. Thanks once again for turning me onto some new stuff. This mix probably seems outdated to you now, given your current circumstances, but some of it hit home with me. Send some of that positive karma my way will ya?
