Post subject:  Out of Print Outpost

I posted not long ago about an album that is out of print and no longer available and thought it may be fun to have a little thread to post downloads of stuff otherwise unavailable. I guess I'm figuring since the stuff isn't available for purchase it's not really stepping on anyone's toes. I tend to be slow to get around to burning old vinyl, so this will probably be a pretty sporadic thread for me to post stuff in, but I'd love to see some other folks post their out of print favorites too. Anyway....on to the first selection...

Let Them Eat Jellybeans

Out of print classic hardcore compilation featuring most of the biggest bands of the era, including Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Subhumans, DOA, Flipper and more. This was an extremely popular compilation in its era and genre that many people would like to see reissued. While stories abound as to why it won't be reissued (from the singer of the Feederz running off with Jello's wife to contract squabbles with SST), the bottom line is this thing is unlikely to see the light of day in the near future....unless you click on the link below.

Well....a thread asking about this band got me pulling out an old record and it's held up pretty well, actually. So, another Out of Print record for y'all is...

Image
Tex & The Horseheads

LA roots punk outfit from the early/mid 80s. I grabbed this one and the follow-up, but remember being pretty disappointed in the follow-up. But, this one had enough to keep me interested. It's damn short, under half an hour and 8 songs, more an EP really. But, the opening track, Oh Mother!, which many people heard on the First Enigma Variations compilation, is a great track and their closing cover of Jimmy Reed's Big Boss Man is solid. I always liked the cover art by Mad Marc Rude as well. Grab a listen and see for yourself.

Sam Cooke: My Kind of Blues

OK...a different track for this one. This is about the only album of Sam Cooke doing blues, but he doesn't do teh normal blues standards, instead opting for somewhat mroe contemporary material. Strong vocals throughout, of course, and the song sleection is interesting. This is one that I have to believe will be coming back into print someday as the guy is an absolute legend, so how he has stuff out of print amazes me. But, this one is, sofor now, if you wanna hear it, you'll have to click below...

Oh yeah...the upload is from my mono copy, not the stereo one in the picture.

The Fleshtones: Hexbreaker!

Some of you may remember the lead singer, Peter Zaremba, from MTVs early alternative show The Cutting Edge. Others of you probably wouldn't recognize Peter Zaremba if he hit you in the face with a sledge hammer. Either way, it's easy to recognize a great, fun, good time garage rock record. And, that's exactly what you get with Hexbreakers!, the sadly out-of-print classic from a band that has been doing retro-styled garage rock for a long time now. This is another one from the early 80s. Click below and give a listen.

Gonna toss one more up here real quick since I just burned it to CD for myself. (It fit nicely on one disc with the Tex & The Horseheads, by the way.)

The Flesheaters: Forever Came Today

1982, hardcore has taken over the punk scene, louder, faster, harder rules the roost and here come The Flesheaters, old school LA roots punk warriors cranking up the volume. This one's raw, powerful, ragged, weird. This is the second version of the rotating band of Flesheaters (look for albums by the first version that featured members of X and the Blasters in the not-too-distant future). Booze soaked, crunching rock. Play this one loud; serve with your favorite whiskey. Again, I'm stunned that this one and the first two Flesheaters albums have remained out of print for so long. So, if you wanna here it...click below:

And, just for fun, here's a link of a good article with more details about this band if you're interested:

It's been a while and I really can't imagine anyone here would think this next one is worth any sort of wait. But, I just burned a disk and thought it would be fun to toss it up here.

Los Angeles Free Music Society: Darker Skratcher

Mostly experimental collection put out by people working under the guise of the LAFMS; a nice mix of noise weirdness and more structured songs. If you like general weirdness and odd noises, this is something you may actually enjoy. Others may still like the 45 Grave track and the opener is pretty much of a mind fuck. Great to listen to when heavily drugged or trying to clear out a party. Side B is somewhat more structured than side A for the most part.

Here's the track list:

Side A
Boyd Rice & Daniel Miller / Cleanliness & Order
Jad Fair / XXOO
Vetza / Stale Puppy-Dog Tails
the Rick Potts Band / Platform Swimfins
Monitor / Guardian
Doodooettes / Pork Had Better Behave
45 Grave / Riboflavin-flavored, Non-carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood
Non / Non-watusi

Side B
Foundation Boo / Nap
Airway / Perpendicular Thrust
Dennis Duck / Davey the Worm
Le Forte Four / The Lowest Form of Music
Human Hands / I Got Mad
Bpeople / The Other Thing

Post subject:  Enigma Variations

Haven't posted anything here for a while, but now I got another one.

Image
The Enigma Variations

Mid 80s label compilation with a really diverse selection of tracks over 2 LPs. You want heavy hard shit, listen to the 45 Grave track or Citadel by Red Kross. You want psychedelia, try Plasticland or Rain Parade. Roots rough edged acoustic? Greg Sage & Naked Prey. Reggae inspired Caribean dance music? The Untouchables. Just plain goofy? John Trubee and Scott Goddard.

Not everything stands out; that SSQ track may be one of the worst dance/electro songs ever (but damn was that singer hot). The Cathedral of Tears song is pretty disappointing. But, plenty of great stuff and not all of it available elsewhere like a great Jet Black Berries song and alternate takes on songs by TSOL and others. The Pandoras tear it up. Just lots to like on here.

Here's the complete track list:

Side A Artists/ Songs:
1. Screamin Sirens - Maniac
2. The Jet Black Berries - Shadowdrive
3. Naked Prey - Flesh On The Wall
4. Tex and The Horseheads - Oh Mother
5. Greg Sage - Straight Ahead
6. Chris D. / Diviine Horseman - Time Stands Still
7. John Trubee - A Blind Man's Penis

Side B Artists/ Songs:
1. Rain Parade - No Easy Way Down
2. Plasticland - Disengaged From The World
3. The Pandoras - Worm Boy
4. Get Smart! - Just For The Moment
5. The Leaving Trains - Leaving Trains
6. Green On Red - Sixteen Ways II
7. Game Theory - 24

Side C Artists/ Songs:
1. 45 Grave - Insurance From God
2. The Effigies - Blue Funk
3. Kraut - Juvenile Justice
4. Redd Kross - Citadel
5. TSOL - Flowers By The Door
6. Channel 3 - True West

Side D Artists/ Songs:
1. Cathedral of Tears - A Situation Of
2. Passionel - The Yellow Boat
3. The Untouchables - Lebanon
4. The Pool - Where Did We Go Wrong
5. Scott Goddard - Cowpunk
6. SSQ - Playback

Not surprising that a label sampler like this is out of print. This was originally priced really cheap just to get you to try some things out (pre-internet, this was a common way of hearing new music in case you youngsters out there didn't realize) and hope you would go buy more . But, it's still something well worth listening to, so if you're curious, click below:

The artwork and your description sold me on it -- I do so like the weird stuff -- and I'm pretty sure a couple of dudes at work will like it, too. I mean, these are people that enthusiastically brought me copies of Charles Manson Sings and William S. Burroughs/Gus Van Sant's Elvis of Letters.

I'm back, and this one is just a damn great record that need to get back in print and fast, actually since it was briefly in print again in the 90s, and copies of the 90s CD go for some pretty hefty prices, I kinda expect someone to do something about this one soon. But, for now, here ya go...

Suicide Commandos: Make A Record

This slice of 1977 Minneapolis pioneering punk is a semi-remembered classic. This is the band that gets lots of credit for kick starting the scene in Minneapolis. Of course, if the record sucked, I wouldn't care. But, the thing's a great, aggressive pop punk classic. Fast paced with great guitar work by Chris Osgood, this thing is a sure winner if you like early punk stuff. Great cover of She, and originals like Attacking the Beat, Real Cool and more. Here's the tracklist:

Shock Appeal
Attacking The Beat
Mosquito Crucifixion
Mr. Dr
Semi-Smart
Call Of The Wild
You Can’t
I Need A Torch
Kidnapped
Premature
I Don’t Get It
Real Cool
She
Burn It Down
Match/Mismatch

FYI, if you burn it to CD, you're gonna want to leave the gaps between all of the tracks except the first two, which run right into each other and will need to be gapless to sound right. Oh yeah, and you'll have to click below:
