Bunky is a strange animal. Maybe not as strange as diverse. According to their bio, they have been a San Diego scene live staple for a few years now. Born To Be A Motorcycle is Bunky's debut album and it should provide fans with a document of the band's quirky sense of adventure. The cover of the album is appropriate with what appears to be a self portrait of the band. The band is comprised of two people, Rafter Roberts and Emily Joyce and contain a bunch of the San Diego scenesters. The album starts out with the poppiest of pop tracks called "Baba". It's got horns all over with a big driving beat sounding like a cross between the Donna's and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The second track follows suit but the wackiness begins on "Funny Like The Moon" where Joyce sings almost cabaret style until they get to the chorus, where they completely rock out. The next track, "Gotta Pee", has some almost deafening guitar walls alongside of Emily's cute as hell voice. She's not the only vocalist though, Rafter takes a crack at it on a few songs as well. He's got a great all-round voice too. He can do the mellow, ballad style ("Lipstick Life") as well as angrier and more aggressive sounds. For the most part, Bunky is pretty harmless even though they are indeed inventive. Quirky indie pop fans need to step up and discover Bunky. It's bloody brilliant!
