Given Cap'n's woes, would it be best to just remove the "Anything Goes" forum and let people take out their need for disgusting content elsewhere, like Hipinion?

Having that stuff here forces work folk to make a tough choice. Is it worth it?

I say yes, we got along just fine without this stuff at the cmj board. I don't think we need it here.

Cut it. It's got to the point where I'm scared to open any NSFW posts from Monty and KOCF anyway.

Maybe, but if they're buried and quickly lost in the backlog, they're a shitload harder to stumble across than if they're gathered up nice and pretty on the main page.

That's exactly right.

Number two, if there is any inkling that potential content doesn't jive with your job description, then it's your job to stay away.

I rarely post from my second job for this very reason.

I say yes it should go.

I don't want to sound like a fascist but I think the posters need to be a little bit more responsible about what they post. If you want to look at www.Hong Kong Muff or Eskimo Dong.Org fine but there isn't really any need to post it on the board.

I, myself, got into trouble at work when the web marshall detected pornography on the Obner site and now someone has lost there job. It's not to much to ask is it?

i don't care because i've neve been there, but these posts will be made. We're gonna have to come up with some sort of list with exactly what is safe for work.
obviously genitalia, gore and dead people are taboo, but people complain about that pic of the skinny lady and big shirtless ron. what about pics of vomiting, poo, etc... that's not so easy to define.

Should we set up a S&P board?

No. It's your job and your responsibility to not get in trouble at work. If there is content that could get you reprimanded or fired, don't come while at work. It's really that simple. There are millions of things that can be construed as offensive.

I rarely pop into the board on Mon, Tues & Friday because I don't want something questionable here to reflect negatively upon me and my job. For the same reason I also do not visit The Onion or The Smoking Gun at work. No nudity, but there is questionable material that can be construed by some as an interference in the workplace.

It is your responsibilty to be mindful of these matters. Most of us here are not paid to browse the web while at work, so even if content is questionable the screwing around on company time aspect is quite valid in its stead.

It's a little bit of preparedness and responsibility. If there is a chance of heavier traffic and you've been told never to be late again, you leave the house 15 mins early. You don't just show up late and blame the traffic.

ok man nice sermon. I think most agree. what we're talking about is if there is a need for that section. and I think most agree that there is not.

But the point is that even by getting rid of the section you really aren't solving anything. And when that doesn't work, what next?

The facts are people browse this site at work. Everyone knows that.

Therefore if you post pornographic images or links knowing that this is the case and that those images or links could potentially get someone into trouble or sacked, then the consequences of posting that content is at least partly if not wholly your responsibility.

It's not good enough to post filth on the board and then just walk away. You talk about "preparedness and responsibility" but the responsibility is on the originator not the browser. This is a music discussion board we shouldn't have to be prepared for disgusting images when we click on a thread.

Bullshit.

You know the content, you belly up to the bar.

Are you honestly saying it's Larry Flynt's fault if you are dumb enough to take a Hustler to work?

Read it again and you'll see that it's not just pornography that will get your ass in a sling.

Plus, you also apparently missed the point that Squirrgle didn't browse the NSFW images at work. The investigation revealed them.

If you pick up Hustler you would expect to see pornography.

If you pick up Rolling Stone you wouldn't. Big difference.

And I didn't miss the point about the NSFW images not being opened. Quite the opposite. The fact that they were posted here at all is the problem. You don't need to read them to get fired therefore it makes puts anyone browsing this site at work in danger of losing their job.

If people can't safely browse this site at work Obner will die. Fact. I'd say at least 50% of the posts are made from work and probably a whole lot more than that. Therefore anyone posting these sort of topics is not only saying "I might get other people into trouble but who gives a shit" they are also putting in jeopardy any sort of community we have here.

I would not feel comfortable taking any of these photos into my workplace, which is generally pretty hands-off. I share an immediate office with a woman whom I respect and enjoy working with, and even if she didn't voice her concerns about the offensiveness of this material, I wouldn't subject her to it.

I kind of agree with everyone. Shitcan the NSFW section. Very few want it and they can go elsewhere for that type of stuff. Whether you look at it or not, its presence reflects bad on the community/site. Would you go to playboy's site and read an interview, not going at all to the pictorial section and expect it to reflect well on you at work. Of course not.

That said, Elvis Fu has a bit of a point. I feel like Monty's getting some undeserved blame for what's not really his fault. We all kind of condonded the acceptability of those posts by creating a forum for them. Knowing that they were here, I wouldn't dream of coming here from an any computer in an office when I thought the current content would be frowned on. And if I did, I'd hope FT, Haq and others wouldn't feel like they played any role in my getting into trouble. I'll take responsibility for my own actions (not that cap'n isn't).

Personally, though, I think we're overstating the importance of the NSFW section in getting Cap'n in trouble. I'd hazard a guess that he would have been fired either way. 700+ posts from work and putting your employer in an awkward situation with a client, customer, affiliate or whatever that guy's firm was are sufficient grounds for being fired in my view. You guys are all taking risks with the amount of time you spend here while at work and any work-related posts are especially risky. Just don't kid yourself about that.
