i fucking love H.L. Mencken. I don't understand why there isn't more of an ear out for him, especially these days

Yeah, a guy who said things like "The only way for a journalist to look at a politician is down his nose."

Contempt, not just suspicion, but contepmt for thos in power.

This won't happen of course, because I don't see Dems getting behind a plan that would cut taxes for evil corporations, even if the end result would be beneficial to their cause. That's part of the problem is that you gotta break some eggs to make an omelet, and most politicians today are just fine grabbing a McGriddle in the drive-through.

actually arent targeted tax custs a more liberal ideal? clinton/gore were great at it......

also meinken is widely concidered to be a racist.....so thats why people probably dont get too crazy about him

should we start a poll for when the GOP will turn on DeLay and possibly Bolton?

Excellent line.

I am not against high gas prices. If supply is short, high gas prices are the answer. That's what will get us to reduce our consumption.

The problem is that gas prices are relatively inelastic in the short run -- in non-econospeak, that means that when gas prices spike up, everyone is forced to pay more, because people still have their cars and follow the same daily routine. Perhaps you will try to drive a little bit less, but you still have to go to work, you still have to pick up your kids from soccer, etc. In the long run, however, high gas prices will raise the demand for more fuel efficient cars and public transportation.

Oh and their are 8 Billion dollars in tax breaks for energy companies tucked away in it. Between this and the bankruptcy bill just passed, it's very hard for me to believe that the GOP isn't in the back pocket of special interests.

Here's some more Mencken:
The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.

The only good bureaucrat is one with a pistol at his head. Put it in his hand and it's good-by to the Bill of Rights.

The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
