Call me a sentimentalist, but I've always had a soft spot for the eloquence of Tonio K.

"Now I know it's not unusual
it's nothing so unique
There's probably hundreds of wonderful love affairs
that go bad in this town every week
But all of them others
them sad-hearted lovers
could cry in their beer, what the hey,
it didn't concern me
was none of my business
I never had nothing to say

But suddenly, darlin', the table has turned
you've left me for somebody new
and now it's hard to express the resentment I feel
for the years that I wasted on you

I'm full of H-A-T-R-E-D
I'm bitter and malign
You've got me P-I-S-S-E-D off
I'm angry most of the time
Why don't you G-O-T-O-H-E-double L
you tramp, you philandering bitch
I'm gonna K-I-L-L one of us, baby,
give me time and I'll decide on which

And I know I'm acting immature
I'm acting like a child
I should display some self control
instead of going wild
And I do wish I could accept all this
as simply "life" which includes pain
and act upon the actual fact
that no one is to blame
Yes, I wish I was as mellow
as, for instance, Jackson Brown,
but "Fountain of Sorrow" my ass, motherfucker,
I hope you wind up in the ground"

Sort of. Marvin Gaye owed her in the neighborhood of $600,000, half of which came from the advance on the record, and the remainder was to come from future royalties. However, if the record didn't sell enough to cover the second half, he still had to pay out of pocket.

It didn't sell enough, but before she got the cash, Marvin Gaye was bankrupt, then dead. By that time, the tax man came and collected their cut, and I don't think Anna nor the kids ever got the remaining $300,000.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert but I guess I'd always assumed that the settlement was 100% tied to his next album which turned out to be "here, my dear" from this from AMG (although i thought I heard the same elsewhere):

Quote:
One of the conditions of the settlement was that Gordy Gaye would receive an extensive percentage of royalties as well as a portion of the advance for his next album. Initially, Gaye was contemplating giving less than his best effort, as he wouldn't stand to receive any money, but then reconsidered at the last moment.

I mean why would you consider tanking something if in the end you'd still owe her money when it didn't sell.

Don't know if it was his originally but...

Johnny Cash - Delia's Gone

"Delia oh Delia, Dela all my life
If I hadn't of shot poor Delia I'd have had her for my wife"

"She was lowdown and triffling she was cold and mean
kind of evil make me want to grab my sub-machine

"First time I shot her, shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second one she died.

I have never known anybody named Caputo. Except for that Belleville dude, but Caputo's just his stage name.

I think he also reconsidered tanking the whole thing out of respect for his fanbase, in addition to his pride. I still think it's a fascinating story and an interesting album, so I wasn't trying to call you out or anything.

The story just tends to get gussied up a bit anyway. Really simply put, what lawyer would take a deal tied exclusively to future earnings? That's license to couch it right there to fuck the ex.

I assumed that those were the two reasons he didn't tank it....I meant more why would he even consider tanking it if poor sales wouldn't have resulted in lower payments to her.

Whole story I guess is gussied up as you say.

The whole mid 60's period singles era is all pretty kiss off:

Heart of Stone
Play With Fire
Get off My Cloud

Also:
Ron Wood - Knock Yer Teeth Out (tribute)

"Big Shot" by Billy Joel, which just popped up on my random. Yeah, a large bulk of his stuff is unlistenable crap, but this is one pissed-off song. Lyrics? You bet...

Quote:
You went uptown riding in your limousine
In your fine Park Avenue clothes
You had the Dom Perignon in your hand
And the spoon up your nose
And when you wake up in the morning
With your head on fire
And your eyes too bloody to see
Go on and cry in your coffee
But don't come bitchin' to me

Because you had to be a big shot, didn't you
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn't you
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You know what everything's about
You and to have a white hot spotlight
You had to be a big shot last night

They were all impressed with your Halston dress
And the people you knew at Elaine's
And the story of your latest success
Kept 'em so entertained
But now you jsut can't remember
All the things you said
And you're not sure you want to know
I'll give you one hint, honey
You sure did put on a show

Yes, yes, you had to be a big shot, didn't you
You had to prove it to the crowd
You had to be a big shot, didn't you
All your friends were so knocked out
You hand to the last word, last night
You're so much fun to be around
You had to have the front page, bold type
You had to be a big shot last night

Well, it's no big sin to stick your two cents in
If you know when to leave it alone
But you went over the line
You couldn't see it was time to go home
No, no, no, no, no, no, you had to be a big shot, didn't you
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn't you
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
So much fun to be around
You had to have a white hot spotlight
You had to be a big shot last night

Elliott Smith / "I Didn't Understand"

thought you'd be looking for the next in line to love then ignore
put out and put away
and so you'd soon be leaving me along like i'm supposed to be tonight, tomorrow and everyday

there's nothing here that you'll miss
i can guarantee you this is a cloud of smoke
trying to occupy space
what a fucking joke
what a fucking joke

i waited for a bus to separate the both of us and take me off far away
from you 'cos my feelings never change a bit i always feel like shit i
don't know why i guess that i "just do"

you once talked to me about love and you painted pictures of
a never-neverland and i could've gone to that place
but i didn't understand
i didn't understand
i didn't understand

Elliott Smith / "Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands" (written after his friends staged an intervention and got him to go to rehab in Arizona)

everybody cares, everybody understands
yes everybody cares about you
yeah and whether or not you want them to
it's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head
to a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally
and a quiet lie that makes you wanna scream and shout

so here i lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
raining it's guiding light upon everyone
for a moment's rest you can lean against the banister
after running upstairs again and again from wherever they came to fix you in but always fear the city's finest follow right behind

you got a pretty vision in your head
a pencil full of poison lead
and a sickened smoke illegal in every town

so here i lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
raining its guiding light upon everyone
here i lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
raining its guiding light upon everyone

you say you mean well, you don't know what you mean
fucking out to stay the hell away from things you know nothing about
