(this is for recording me live, not boolegging, though i wouldn't mind doing that as well)

i want something that is small and works on batteries and that isn't too expensive.

and also is easy to dump onto my hard drive.

i was looking at this, but fear sound quality would be an issue:

I mean if you just want to be able to hear sounds coming out of it and have no sound quality what-so-ever I guess that'd be fine. What kind of quality are you looking for?

Back in the day, the mini disc recorder from Sony with the optional stereo mic got disgustingly good live recordings, and I mean "how the fuck?!?" good. Don't know about modern options, tho.

so that's a vote of "no" on the digital voice recorder?

It'll document what occurred, but it won't be something you'll want to listen to for pleasure.

When I was in college my buddy used to record shows all the time with a Sony Minidisc recorder. They turned out really well in most cases.

you're the victim of some GA / Chicago strife in another post earlier.

Thanks for the seconding. Those things were sooo cool. Except when they broke, which they all did.

...eh. I mean, if it was super clean, etc, maybe. Oh, and if it came with that mic, and the price was right, reputable seller, yada yada. Yeah. You're stuck with minidiscs, tho. Other than that, no real downside. Battery-powered, lightweight, 5 second setup, and just way too good a sound for something that small. Just get a case for it, and treat it real real good.

I wouldn't do it dude. There's got to be something else out there. MiniDiscs are deader than dead and hard to find.

so against what everyone told me, i got a voice recorder.
this one to be exact:

Image

i recorded myself playing, and i have to say it sound pretty damn good.
you can hook up an external mic to it, which made it sound even better.

i'm going to have to test it at one of my performances to get a full read on it's quality, but if it sucks i can always return it.

though i worry i'm already becoming attached to it.
it's so easy to carry around and just hit record that i might keep it just for recording song sketches and such.

How much memory is on it, which I guess really means how long will it record for?

45 minuteson the high quality setting, 6 hours on the bad one (which is a file i couldn't open.)

That's better than I expected. It's not great, because I imagine it's internal memory, so 45 really means "45, then you gotta go home and reload," as opposed to minidisc or something removeable. But if it was relatively cheap, it's a good, simple alternative sounds like.

i recorded all afternoon, stupid long harmonica freak outs and such.
sure i have a Pro Tools set up, but i'm too lazy to set everything up.

i think i like this thing.

and yes, it's all internal memory (and it's actually 60 minutes)
