Five albums I brought with me to work today....

1. Comus- First Utterance This album had quickly secured a place at the top of my CD piles. Surreal, prog-folk goodness. Anyhow, I think this record is fucking brilliant, up there in weirdness with Twink's Think Pink and Bruce Palmer's The Cycle is Complete You can hear a songhere (although its not the best one, it gives you an idea of the madness of come- but you have to listen to the whole thing). Also, you can find short streams on the Aquarius Records website. The clips are misleading because of the continuous shifts of melody and themes in any given song (which admittedly can drag on at points, but I just think of them as seperate songs).

2. Roxy Music- For Your Pleasure I love this record-whats not to love...the brilliantly unsettling "danceable solution to teenage revolution" ( Do the Strand )? or the ode to Ferry's perfect woman, the plastic blow up doll "I blew up your body, but you blew my mind" ( In Every Dream Home a Heartache). Its time you got reacquainted with this record.

3. Brian Eno- Here Comes the Warm Jets Um, what's there to say? Baby's on Fire.......its brilliance? keeping me interested with a melody consisting of two chords.....

4. The Comsat Angels- Sleep No More Great album, great band.

5. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King I could play 21st Century Schizoid Man over and over again... good album, but Im not feeling the rest of the album as much as usual lately.

I'm listening to CD's less and less and the iPod and iTunes more and more, but in the car it's still CD's. Today I grabbed from the A titles stack:

American Idiot - Overly hyped but very listenable

Apple Venus Pt. 1 - fucking brilliant. Why isn't XTC bigger? Because they don't tour due to Andy's chronic stage fright.

Area One Sampler - I saw the Atlanta 2001 show on Moby's Area One Tour. Some good stuff - Outkast, Moby, Oakenfold and Nelly Furtado who was as cute as a button. They handed out sampler discs on the way out which is how I discovered Basement Jaxx and Bleachin'. The Bleachin' track on this disc "Peakin'" is one of those that I regularly hit the repeat button for.

Automatic For The People - Say no more

Axe Victim - Ahhh! Be Bop Deluxe. No Trains to Heaven and Adventure in a Yorkshire Landscape have some of the cleanest guitar licks ever. Bill Nelson definitely in the top 5 guitarists on my list.

Paul, that comus sounds right up my alley. I think Twink was my best find off of listmania.

Hey Billy, I think you will like it... the Comus was pretty hard to find before the reissue- and now the reissue is hard to find, but luckily its being reissued in June... I can burn you a copy now if you want.. just let me know

as far as my friday 5pack, lots (4/5) of fairly new stuff to me

1. Curtis Mayfield - Curtis

What can I say - Curtis is the man. My favorite soul singer and a really great and underrated songwriter. He really deserves to be on any of the great songwriter threads that get started but he never seems to get mentioned. I like Superfly a little more, just for the cohesiveness of the storytelling but this still is a top 100 for me.

2. Bob Mould - Body of Song

This will be a first listen. I've been anticipating this album for several years. I love the hell out of his first two solo albums and Husker Du, but haven't really cared for much since. I've heard some people compare parts of it to Warehouse...trying to hold back my expectation level

3. Joao Gilberto - the Legendary Joao Gilberto

His first three albums -- including Chega da Saudade, the album that invented Bossa Nova -- combined on one cd, all of which are out of print as is this. I recently paid $65'ish for it on Ebay and this will be my first listen.

4. Judee Sill - Heart Food

I started a thread about her here if you are interested in any info on her. This is another first listen. I've given one listen to her S/T and wasn't disappointed.

5. Nao Wave

Brazilian post punk compilation. It really was a must buy for me, but without really having that high expectations. This will be only my 2nd listen but so far I'm pretty pleased with. I still haven't heard Soul Jazz's competing Sexual life of Savages comp and almost ordered that the other day before deciding that it would be overkill until I digested this one.

I listened to this on my way home from work, put me in a great mood for the weekend.

These are two albums I keep meaning to check out, and never do... thanks for reminding me.

Not listening to much today, but during acupuncture last night, I heard El-Hadra The Mystic Dance. Very relaxing stuff. Found this description online:

El-Hadra, The Mystik Dance is the rhythmic trance meditation of the sufis, performed by Klaus Wiese on zither, Ted de Jong on tabla and Mathias Grassow on keyboards. The pulse of the rhythm is very important because it corresponds with the breath and heartbeat at the same time. Starting slowly then accelerating and intensifying El-Hadra is breathtaking, a whirling ecstasy.

Could be appropriate music for... ahem.... more intimate moments as well.
