ok, so many of you are aware that mlle and i have upcoming nuptuals and we've booked a honeymoon in bali with travel insurance (keep reading. . .) so now i read the travel advisory against all "non-essential" travel to all of indonesia (especially aceh, jakarta, sulawesi) and the u.s. embassy just closed (albeit temporarily i suspect) and this australian chick just got 20 years.

so, as i said my money's safe because i have travel insurance (thank the fucking lord for that one) and we're going to take this weekend to figure out what we're going to do. an alternative is chiang mai, thailand (but there's no beach there) or maybe we'll keep it all western hemisphere and just go somewhere warm like st. martin/st. maarten, take one week instead of two and bank the cash and vaca time for later in the year. i don't know i just wish i didn't have to deal with this crap two weeks before my wedding.

thoughts? what's the non-americaners' view of travel to non-jakarta indonesia these days? i've tried to check out other countries view of the sitch' to no avail--my web research skills are lacking.

The australian girl was lucky not to get the death penalty - she had 9 pounds of marijauna on her.

I went to Anguila for my honeymoon. It's right off st. martin. the caribbean is just so much easier than any where else for us.

st. martin is fantastic. you'll have a relaxing time. save a week for later in the year, and just spend a week now.

oh and congrats :)

As much as the U.S. government likes to go overboard on their travel warnings, I don't think I would be a good idea (IMO).

I put a bit more faith in the Brits and this is what they say: British Foreign & Commonwealth Office

What about Cosa Rica or Belize? There is also Croatia/Slovenia, which are supposed to have really beautiful but as of yet undiscovered beaches. Or are you set on that region?

If you want seclusion, beauty, safe, non-touristy, incredible food everywhere...go to St. Bart's. It's pricey in season, but I think the season is near the end.

this is where we went to vacay and had our own little bungalow on the beach.

I just set that photo on my desktop. It's like the visual equivalent of R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming"

so there were a couple bomb blasts in sulawesi--i think that pretty much settles it. granted, different island, but it's hot over there nonetheless. we're leaning towards a full two weeks in thailand (bangkok, chiang mai, and koh samui).
