some chick was asking for new music from this year, and i came up with some sort of list and omits a great deal, but i just looked at some shit. here's what i said:
Quote:
some of my favorite albums from 2005:
dalek - absence (really gritty, street-level, socio-political hip hop over really irritating noise rock and grinding noises)
common - BE (best neo-soul record in a long time. almost entirely produced my kanye west, just smooth, positive hip hop)
jesu - jesu (more loud, droning noise rock. thunderous guitars and feedback and stuff, but somehow sounds peaceful)
antony & the johnsons - i am a bird now (cross-dresser who writes very surreal piano ballads and has an amazingly haunting theatrical voice. album also guest starts people like lou reed, devendra banhart, boy george and rufus wainwright)
kiki & herb - will die for you (live double album from this duo, which consists of one cross-dresser and one dude. more piano ballad, songstress stuff, but without the beauty. it's just weird, and really drunk and has extra long story monologues.)
architecture in helsinki - in case we die (super fun happy twee pop from australia. perfect for sunny weather)
eluvium - talk amongst the trees (surreal ambient pieces of music that float in your mind and consume you)
fantomas - suspended animation (one of the most fun records of the year. 30 tracks and just sounds like a heavy metal cartoon on speed)
deadbeat - new world observer (ambient and dub music. real chill)
m. ward - transistor radio (concept album that is sort of folky. sounds old-timey, and is completely fantastic)
quantic soul orchestra - pushin' on (superb jazz/funk/breakbeat from these dudes)
nostalgia 77 - the garden (more jazz and funk. they do a cover of "seven nation army" that is amazing)
sharon jones & the dap-kings - naturally (sounds like some old soul recorded in the 60s or 70s, but is completely new and just fucking awesome how retro it sounds.)
robyn - robyn (the swedish pop star is back, and this new album is similar to that gwen stefani album and kylie minogues music, but with like 400% more badass)
ttc - batards sensibles (french electro/hip hop. crazy for dancing)
the kills - no wow (just about the only indie rock record that has been worth my time this year)
robbie fulks - georgia hard (it's country, but it's not country you'll see on cmt. it's too country for the mainstream and too country for the hipsters. great songwriter. sounds like lyle lovett kinda)
ryan adams - cold roses (return to form, more country-tinged rock)
anyway, im leaving out a bunch of other good shit, but this suffices for now.
