Or, Why the fuck did it take me this long to realize the ABSOLUTE GENIUS of his work with The Catholics?

Last week or so I stumbled upon "Blast Off" on random and kept the album rolling. Fucking insanity. Sounds almost like Sticky Fingers-era Stones outtakes. Nice'n'dirty.

As I said to Yail last weekend "Why didn't you grab me by the ear and force me head toward the speakers? This Shit Rules!"

So, he shot me Pistolero and Black Letter Days and the S/T, all of which have been kicking my ass.

Black Letter Days is today's fave, but that is sure to change over the course of the week.

With this, plus Lucero, plus Alejandro Escovedo, and Love as Laughter, I have enough "billy" alt-countryish rock to be in heaven for a while.

i prefer the solo albums to the pixies. i know that's a little inflamitory to say, but it's just how it is so leave me alone. anyway, the only records i don't love through and through are devil's workshop and show me your tears. i could never really get into those two. especially with the former being a double release with black letter days which is one of my favorites.

i'm an idiot for not having anything past "cult of ray"
a huge idiot.

and even only having three of his albums i agree his solo is better than the Pixies, "teenager of the year" is top 5 albums ever for me.

Appresh. BLD's is top shelf material. I used to put 'I Will Run After You' on too many mixes in '02.

Black Letter Days is by far my favorite. Dog in the sand and Pistolero are close behind.
I bought a collection of rarities at a show in San Diego a few years back titled Odd Balls that is pretty good. It has great one liner descriptions of each song like, "me trying to sound like Springsteen"

He does owe me 18 bucks for that FrankBlackFrancis turd he dropped last year. What a complete waste of time that was!
Make that 18 bucks, a personal apology, AND the 45 or so minutes I spent listening to that garbage.

Yail turned me on to FB and I became an instant fan.
"Black Letter Days" & "Frank Black & the Catholics" are in heavy rotation at rancho de l'albion.

Since discovering FB I have gone back and listened to Pixies music and must say I appreciate the more mature songwriting and stripped down stylings of Frank withou the Pixies.

It's the kind of music that inspires one to invest in a home studio.

"THe Man Who Was Too Loud" from the Peel Session with Teenage Fanclub might be in my top 10 songs of all time. The album version, not so much.

And let's not forget all those albums with the Catholics are live to two track and usually recorded in five days. Ponder that while listening to Dog In The Sand, Devil's Workshop, Show Me Your Tears, Pistolero and Black Letter Days.

So according to this thread, I am the Frank Black guru, eh?

Teenager of the Year and the s/t Catholics are probably at the top of my list though I could make a case for any of them with the exception of "Cult of Ray"(good, but mediocre) and Devil's Workshop (surprisingly enough, I just recently got it and havent really given it much time)

One of my favorite and certainly most listened to artists and he usually puts on a good live show as well to boot, to boot.
