I've been listening to Alice in Chains Unplugged all morning and I forgot how good this set was. I was never a big fan of the group but I find this performance pretty moving.

Now I have an urge to "discover" some other great acoustic performances I may not be too aware of or have never given a shot. What you people got for me?

pipe down Jocko, I hadda take a leak.

I've said it before, but when will VH1 Classics start rerunning the MTV Unplugged's from the early 90's? The Cure, REM, AIC, Allman Brothers, and of course Nirvana et. al ar GOLD JERRY, pure gold....

Rain your hate on me haters, but I always like the Dave Mathews/Tim Reynolds accoustic album.

Yeah, I was going to add Neil Young and Eric Clapton.

I can't really think of "acoustic" albums that weren't party of the MTV Unplugged series. If they were they were probably folks albums. It seems that this was the trendy thing at the time. Let's take rock bands and strip them down and then everybody had an acoustic album. Some better than others.

Others that come to mind:

Grateful Dead - Reckoning (their best acoustic session IMO)
Nick Drake - Pink Moon (again, folk)

Oh and where's the love for Tesla's "Five Man Acoustical Jam". I used to love that shit. Still love "Love Song" on there even thought they bust out the electric for the big solo.

That's more where I was headed R.D.

I'm familiar with all of the Unplugged series and the Dave Mattews/Tim Reynolds (agree, great stuff). I guess that was one instance where MTV got it right for a change (who knew?). I've been exposed to a few of the VH1 Storytellers, but may need to look more in this area.

Nirvana Unplugged is the only album of theirs I have spun all the way through this century.

Don't forget the Yo Raps Unplugged, if for nothing else the fact that LL fucking SLAYED Mama Said...

Check the Bob Dylan Live 1964 for a pre-electric Bob in top form. All of those "Bootleg Series" are awesome, especially if one were to listen in consecutive order (throw in Before the Flood, Last Waltz and At Budokan and you'll be astinonished..but that's a whole nother thread)

Collective Soul has a new cd out called "From The Ground Up" which is all acoustic and pretty good. Their music sounds more indie this way.

Foo Fighter's new acoustic disc was pretty good, but I have only listened to it once so far, and my first impression was that it was pretty even toned.

Collective Soul? ....(shudder)... They also have a new single out that is "Living After Midnight" and "Where Are We Running" interspliced.

<---- not proud they're from GA too.

Duh...I forgot:

Alejandro Escovedo. The bonus disc which now comes with Gravity is a live set from Santa Monica in 1993. Absolutely stellar.

Ian Hunter Strings Attached (although it can't exactly be called stripped down, because the fucker's got an orchestra in tow, but it's mostly acoustic + strings versions of Hunter and Mott the Hoople classics)

Indubitably. Tindersticks - Waiting For The Moon Might not meet your standards since, as far as I know, they're acoustic around the clock.

Listening to RJ as I post. It sends chills.

I've got to agree with the Alice in Chains Unplugged set. It's really the only album of theirs that I find listenable.

The other unplugged set that was particularly notable for me (other than the obvious faves) was Midnight Oil. Fanfuckintastic.
