SEPTA is also the most expensive in the country. At least Portland's is free.

and there are rednecks in ATL, just not nearly as many as people think. This is because there's been a pretty massive influx of people down there over the last 8 years or so, largely from the north. Not that we don't have rednecks in the north (why don't people understand that?), but rednecks aren't usually the type whose company just moved their headquarters to ATL for tax reasons or whatever. so yeah...

and Nacho, don't forget that NY has a whole heap of redneck rural areas (probably more than PA), as does IL, CA, MA, and pretty much every state in the union (not sure about Hawaii). PA is not alone in this respect. And don't forget that Pittsburgh is a kickass town as well.

True - I've spent lots of time in the redneck areas of Western NY- that's where I grew up (outside of Buffalo). But the difference is the influence the rednecks have in each state- not very much in NY, but tons in PA. We're talking about a state that elected Rick Santorum, after all.

portland's is only free downtown in the fareless square (and they are talking about doing away with that). riding max our the bus lines outside the city costs about 1.55 for all zones. pretty cheap. portland's system is good for such a small city (as opposed to Seattle who is way behind).

ATL is overrun by carpetbaggers, but it is also where many folks settle after coming to UGA or TEch for college...so you have a shall we say "more enlightened" populace.

NY rednecks still hold som sway. Their State Senate is solidly Republican, and just 5 years ago they had D'Amato as Sen. and Pataki as Gov and ol what's his gar gave Hilary a run for her money.

Hell, even in MAss, the only reason they are so Dem dominated is Unions.

there are rednecks everywhere. In Hawaii, they call them locals.

Yeah, Republicans do have a lot of power in NY, but I wasn't equating being a redneck with being republican. Most of the NY Republicans I'm familiar with are at least reasonable people. Rick Santorum could never get elected in NY.

Wrong.

SEPTA's max fare rates, on the R commuter lines are the most expensive, something like 3 dollars or so per ride. I hardly ever ride the commuter lines.

Subway, buses, and trolleys are only a $1.30 token, and transfers are 60 cents.

This is about half as expensive as DC Metro.

Yeah i should've modified that to the trains.

and I think the one thing we should all be able to agree on is that DC is a royal shithole.

The DC metro is 1.35 for unlimited transfers within zone 1. I'm not sure how there zone system works, but it was fine for me when I was there in May for a week.

My big problem with SEPTA is that you get a lot less from SEPTA for what you pay for. It's probably comparable in price to the Metro, but at least the Metro gets you around to different parts of DC relatively quickly.

From what I've seen of DC, I can't say it's any more of a shithole than Philly is. They both have some pretty rough sections, and also some nice ones.

Basically, it's set up for commuters, not really getting around the city, b/c it goes to so few parts of the city. I know all of those systems mentioned in that list (with the exception of BART, which I've never used) have subway/el systems that are good for actually getting around the city. And SEPTA is the 2nd most expensive to use, behind BART.

I don't know what you are talking about, but ALL subway systems are set up for commuters primarily, not for getting around the city. Pretty much the only area that doesn't have service that desperate needs it is the Roosevelt Boulevard corridor. Everywhere else (S Philly, NE Frankfurt, Center City, W Philly especially) is already decently serviced.

SEPTA hits up more parts of the city than BART, and has more stops than the Boston T. Of course, Philadelphia also has about three times the land area of City of Boston, so there are more areas to service.

The reason people don't use SEPTA, for just getting around, is because Center City is so walkable.

The biggest problem with the SEPTA subway lines is that it lacks a Roosevelt Boulevard line, and that it's absolutely FILTHY.

Are you the heir to some kind of SEPTA fortune or something? I think we live in alternate realities. Subway systems I've used- NYC, Boston, DC - are all very good for getting around the city. From any one point in each of those cities, for the most part, you can get to many other parts of that city. The SEPTA subway simply doesn't do that.

Basically, if you want to get around to different parts of Philly, you need a car. That's one thing I really don't like about living here.

oh sweet lord how i hate duck boats.

they fine black dudes for playing 50 Cent too loud, but that fucking atrocity gets to shimmy its way down South Street playing Bar Mitzvah music with some ass rod begging the kids to quack as loud as they can.

No you don't.

It's just as difficult to go from say, Port Richmond to Cedar Park, than it is to go from Morningside to Alphabet City or Chelsea in NYC, where the subways don't run.

I live in Queen Village, so if I want to go to the Art Museum neighborhood, or someplace like Roxborough or Chestnut Hill, driving is the only way to get there within a reasonable time.

I live near 6th, so we're practically neighbors.

I really like Bella, it has more character and personality than QV (though I like QV a lot, too). Plus it's a little more centrally located. If I stay in Philly beyond mid-2006, I'll probably move a few blocks over to bella.

Queen Village to Art Museum is like a six dollar cab ride, 20 minutes by bike, or a 10 minute walk up to Market street, and then a 15 minute ride on the 38 bus.

Rox is a little tricky, I'll give you that, but it's also far away, so it'll take you 20 minutes by car as well. Hop on the R5 from Market East and you can get out to C-Hill/Rox in less than 25 minutes, though it will cost you $3.50

And what the heck, you can ride Phlash for free pretty much, from South Street all the way to the Museum.
