Reading these reviews, seems like i missed something -- http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists ... ndssayyeah . i didn't hear the whole album, but a majority of it and was underwhelmed. Should i give it another go? Tiny mix tapes says RIYL talking heads, the arcade fire & thom yorke. This should be rollin down my alley...

Like everything else in life, it all comes down to personal taste. Why force yourself to like something if you're just not feeling it? I, for example, totally am diggin' their sound.

Btw, I've heard them compared vocally to David Byrne vs the others.

i really like it. the voice still bother me every now and again, but i'd really really like to check them out with Songs:Ohia or even with the National when they come around to philly.

Me too. I've been very underwhelmed from what I've heard so far.

Like the godawful Louis XIV, this band must have some crazy connections to be the recipient of all of this hype. They are just not that good. Period.

no kidding. please don't compare cyhsy to louis xiv. yes, to each their own, but for crying out loud!!!!

and fyi, cyhsy isn't signed to a label yet, so for an unsigned band, they're getting a decent amount of hype. you either love 'em or you hate 'em.

timmy I have it on my jawn...I will be online tonight if you want to try and connect..

IMHO I dig it..The singers voice does need a little getting used to, but overall I'm starting to dig it more and more...

On another note.I also got that Anniemal cd recently, and that shit sucks...
Not much talent there...

I've liked what i've heard on KEXP. Plus they're playing at the John in Morning at Night show in sept or Oct.

Pretty cool.

I really like this, and I'm enjoying it more with each listen. I also don't mind the singer's voice and liked this initially, though.

Exactly. Where is the hype coming from? They must have some pretty good connections for an unsigned band.

Timmyjoe, check under my stuff tonight (tcj.) I have it, but really haven't gotten a chance to fully get into it yet. It sounds pretty good, but not as stunning as I'd hoped it would be.

I don't think they have many more connections than the usual northeast corridor, unsigned band that has an obvious amount of talent. I started seeing them pop up via booking and on NY blogs about a year ago, so it's not like they came completely out of nowhere.

As to the album, I think it's an alright debut - maybe a 7? - and shows a band with a good deal of promise, a fairly consistent sound, and aspirations beyond Rothko and Trash (and a love-em-hate-em singer!). But, I don't think this is anywhere as compelling, vital, or important a collection of songs (err, an album) as it has been made out to be via comparisons to Aeroplane, myriad Talking Heads records, Funeral, and so forth. A lot of their progressions and melodies merely repeat ad naus, without *really* going anywhere, aside from capturing a feeling (e.g. this is the sound of a band jamming on one particular groove and melody that they all like). But is that the kind of sustained "wow" that is deserving of all the hype? I say it's not and is largely a reflection of how dreadfully uninspiring the rest of indie rock is in the 05.

They strike me as the kind of group I'd've latched onto when I was a bit younger and in need of vicarious emotional expression via music (Emergency & I anyone?). Nothing wrong with that at all on either count (me changing), I just don't find this stuff particularly transcendent.

But worth the vitriol and hate that I see in the rush to condemn the tastemakers and their users? Not really!

-kv.
