I've been paying relatively close attention to the chickenpox issue since, like, 6 years old. In that time, there's no way I had any blisters and didn't know, and mom swears I didn't before that, so I can only take her word for it. I also recall a friend getting it at like age 7 or 8, and I was around him. But I've been told that very rarely, some people just happen to be immune. I hope it's one of the two, because yeah, it's suppose to really get nastier as you get older.

As far as I know I never had it either. My sister told me she thinks the Fu scenario of getting it-but not really is the most likely.

I think this all goes back to PE in schools. When I was in 7-8-9 grades, we didn't have PE electives, we had PT. You ran suicides in the alotted time or the whole class did it over. You ran bleacher to bleacher in the alotted time or the whole class did it over. You did push ups, sit ups, crunches, squat thrusts, pull ups, etc... All before you did whatever game was that day's activity.

And, you played a sport. And in the summer, you got kicked out of the house to go "practice" that sport. Which often meant 7 am tennis lessons in the summer, followed by taking your ass outside and mowing the dam lawn.

And none of this was "C'mon Connor, its time for your lessons, put on your helmet and get in your car seat and mommy will drive you in the AC to your soccer practice" it was "LOOG! Get your ass out of bed, you gotta be down to the tennis courts at 7 am, and I will be damned if I'm driving you." And then when you were late, you ran laps and did extra drills for being late.

AND, you didn't eat pre-manufactured cookie dough as a snack...you knew when meal time was, and you didn't drink a fucking VAT of soda with meals, you drank milk or water.

Oh, and if any of you think this is just the product of a military home it was moms, not pops cracking the whip at home.

That said, I am now a lazy big fat fuck, but I sure wasn't when I was a kid, and I wil be damned if the kids I will eventually have (and not really want) won't be subjected to the same damn treatment.

I don't know why but I always feel awful when people tell me that they were beaten as a child. My parents never beat me so I can't even begin to know how that feels.

I wasn't "beaten," but I got spanked, if there's a difference for you. Probably happened all of twice, tops. Once you figure out they actually mean it, the threat is enough.

I buy it because it tastes better.

My tap water is great. I would also drink the tap water in Ruston, La., which wasn't as good as here, but probably not of the quality of whatever burg you inhabit.

I only buy bottled water for the bottle, then I refill it out of the tap.

I guess I meant any sort of physical punishment. It's odd but my father never beat me or even threatened to, yet I still had a genuine fear for him. I wonder what's that all about. I hear we have a Dr. Phil wannabe among us, perhaps he can enlighten me. ;)

I'm for corporal punishment up to a certain age, but I don't believe it's absolutely necessary to get your point across.

I deserved to have my ass whipped from time to time.

Yeah, I've thanked my parents for spanking me and told them that I probably needed it more; Shit I was an insolent little bastard.

The random beatings with canes and straps, not so much.

Most effective was the FEAR of my dad more than actually getting a whippin; but my mom would come after us with a fly swatter to the legs in the summer to chase us out of the house and it worked pretty damn good.

that's my thoughts. I wasn't spanked alot, but the threat was always there, and it meant something. I wasn't spanked after around 9 or 10 years old. It was effective and I know that at times it was the only way to control me.

OPA, you shouldn't feel bad because I really apperciate it. It wasn't easy for them to do because it's not my parents natural temperment.

My mother was the enforcer. She'd pull out a belt and I'd get it pretty bad, but looking back now, I deserved it. Now I can count on one hand the # of times my Dad hit me. He threw a shoe once and hit me in the face. Felt so bad, he took off from work, I didn't go to school and we went to an amusement park.

Got the belt from Dad but the switch was way worse.

I'll be whipping my kids ass.

Grandma whipped us with Hot Wheels track. I took a straight whipping once, and I believe all the other grandkids fell in line.

Moms used the wooden spoon.

Dad hit me a total of 3 times, and I know I deserved all of them, though his methods would have him under a jail these days, it put Teh Fear in me: Metal Buckle on a military belt, coat hanger, and a backhand accross the face in which his West Point ring chipped a tooth.

But, I can think of several times, especially as a teenager, when he shoulda took me behind the wood shed and didn't.

I got the wooden spoon and the open palm more often than anything, but the belt once or twice.

I would say I was spanked the appropriate amount, and that I harbor no resentment or emotional hangups as a result.

Dad was always rational belt user. Mom was a wild woman who preferred the backhand across the face.

Also the kneeling on hard floors for long periods of time was an effective and painful tool preferred by my step mother.

This thread is depressing. It went from fat children to children being beaten with belts and wooden spoons. :(
