I stumbled across this board a while ago and come here to get some music recommendations. I decided WTF, might as well join in. Some of you seem pretty smart, so I was wondering if anyone else was concerned about this: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/. I thought it was a bit paranoid at first, but the current administration's every action leads me to believe they are taking it very serious.

About my music preferences:

Favorite Genre: Pop Rock
Favorite Bands: Weakerthans, Spoon, The National, New Pornographers, John Vanderslice, Wilco

Favorite Albums This Year:
1. The National - Alligator
2. Josh Rouse - Nashville
3. Calla - Collisions
4. Spoon - Gimme Fiction
5. Go-Betweens - Oceans Apart
6. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
7. John Vanderslice - Pixel Revolt
8. Love as Laughter - Laughter's Fifth
9. Pernice Brothers - Discover a Lovelier You
10. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

Nice. Good call on The National. Its probably my favorite album this year so far. If you have been lurking for a while, then you probably know how divisive the album is on this board. Some people love it, while others hate it because of his voice.

Dalen, of course I'm a little paranoid, especially when it comes to our government. But, I have some questions for you. Do you believe this scenario will never happen? Do you believe the world has an endless supply of oil? Do you believe Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunmen?

I street teamer is someone who posts solely for the purpose of advertising something, usually a lame band "trying to make it big". They're often considered lower than dogcrap, hence why we give that designation to newbies. Stick around and your title will change as you post.

And welcome to our group. Odd people fit in very well here.

Oil is a finite resourse, and even Shell has stated that peak production will happen in the near future. New forms of energy do need to be found, and God help us if they aren't.

I've now read two posts of yours, and I think I can already tell that you believe the war in Iraq truly is about "fighting terrorism," or "liberating the Iraqis." Maybe I'm wrong, paranoid people often jump to conclusions, but if I'm right, then it is pointless for us to ever discuss politics.

Wait, I've read Dalen's posts for a few years now, and I couldn't tell you exactly what he's thinking about anything.

Sage much?

It is pointless. Don't ever mention it here again.

Some of us were true haters, and are finding this to be a grower.

Welcome. One thing you'll learn quickly is that some of us love to argue about politics. If you don't take things personal, it's good fun.

Dalen is just your normal republican british music loving buddist with an almost eerie ability to find new music and share. It takes all kinds and he adds a much needed amount of diversity to the board.

Will we run out of affordable oil eventually? Yes. It's a finite resource.

The real question is whether we will run out before an alternative takes its place as the main energy source in order to keep things running smoothly. Oil Crash theorists seem to thinks it will run out early. I have some good friends in the industry who feel otherwise, and they point out that a lot of the oil crash estimations were based on currently (at the time) known sources and technology. More sources are being found, and improving technology can make previously unavailable source much more accessible. On the other side of the coin, oil use could be increasing due to population growth and third-world development. It's a tough call.

For those who don't buy into the war on terrorism or newamericancentury.org's mission statement, peak oil is a framework they could use to make sense of Bush's foreign policy. Could it be true? Sure it could. If it is, what can we do about that's going to make a difference? Moderating our own oil consumption and pushing for alternative energy sources is probably the best start. I think busting out the ol' Y2K shelter is going a bit overboard at this point. A lot of the survivor mentality assumes that staying alive and keeping the human race going is essential and ultimately a good thing, and I think anyone who really believes in a higher power and an immortal soul needs to double-check that survivor idea. Serenity prayer, yo.

Welcome to the board. I like the National record quite a bit.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, lot of nice people on this board. I've only posted on one other message board before, Hipinion, and it was filled with little dickheads. It doesn't bother me being attacked on a message board, but at least make it funny.

Good to see lots of love for The National' s new one. It's the definition of a grower. I can't believe I was disappointed with it the first couple listens. Now I think it's better than Sad Songs.

Sketch, that was a great post. I think the reason that concern for a possible oil crisis is rising, is the fact that crude oil is over $60 a barrel and expected to reach $70 by the end of the year. This coupled with the fact that India and especially China are quickly becoming economic powers is cause for a lot of concern. With these two countries drastically increasing their demand for oil in the next few years, can enough new oil fields be discovered to keep up with the rising demand? If not oil could soon reach $100 a barrel and a global recession would certainly soon follow.

Dalen, it figures the one band you won't let me talk shit on happens to be one I hate. But there is no doubt that my musical taste is very limited. I keep trying to expand it, but I just can't.

That's because this board is about music, and dalen is the enigma, and cool, regardless of his politics

If I had it my way, Dalen would not be welcome on this board because I would only allow Mexicans and anarchists.

Resistance is futile. :o
