hmm... i grew up in a college town with 5000 people and another 5000 during the school year. there was a thriving scene for a few years while i was in high school, but not much since then. the jazz june is probably the biggest band to come out of it, but my favorite was grieving eucalyptus, even though they spent more time talking than actually playing at any show.

Yeah, but they all move there to fight for a suck off the music industry's teet.

If it's my HOME, home town (Highland Park, IL)....
It has to be:
Caviar (I carpooled to Hebrew school with their drummer - Jason. He was a dick to me, as I was a bit of a geek and he was one of the "cool kids".)
or
The Redwalls
Who are actually from Deerfield, but I grew up right on the border between Highland Park and Deerfield, and actually had a bunh of kids from Deerfield in my classes.

Oh, and Richard Marx is from Highland Park, too. But he's not "good".
My current home boasts the keys player from Umphrey's McGee as a hometown boy, as well as James Young of Styx, of course.

If you wanna be an ass, go ahead. But don't act like Motown, the birthplace of techno, two of the most important punk bands ever and probably the best current rock scene ever are negated by a trio of unfortunate novelty acts.

Oh, and I forgot Sufjan Stevens.
That oughta make all you indie-loving asses shut up.

Nashville has a shit-ton of bands, and I REALLY need to get out and check out some local acts. It's strange that I have all of this music sitting right under my nose but complaing there's nothing to do in this town.

Dude, STFU.

I picked those out of your post to clown on you, not on Detroit as a whole. The thread was about picking favorite bands, not one city versus another.

I'm certainly not gonna hold Atlanta over any other major city in terms of musical contributions.

My heart beats for you. Man, I want to go back to the Detroit History Museum strictly for the Techno exhibit they have.... oooh it was like being a kid in a candy store!

Um, as for LA bands, I'm with T, WAAAAAAAAAY too many bands. So for now, I'll just mention my current favorites:

Silversun Pickups
Giant Drag
Frausdots
HELEN STELLaR
Autolux

Lucky for me a lot of well known bands and good music has come out of Glasgow; from the very beginning of pop music in the UK (Lonny Donegan was born here and without Lonny Donegan there would have been no Beatles) right up to recently Pitchforked reviewed Sons and Daughters but I'll narrow it down to two.

Teenage Fanclub - They were the band that made me realise there actually was a local music scene.

Orange Juice - It would take way to long to even scratch the surface of my love of Orange Juice.

Not from here originally, but Phoenix-and-area has been home to Megadeth/Dave Mustaine for a long time. So that'd be my favorite, I guess.

Others from or in the Phoenix-area:

Alice Cooper (Alice is constantly on the air shilling for local car dealers in commercials, or out golfing! Talk about not living the image he used to project.)
Sacred Reich
Flotsam & Jetsam
Gin Blossoms
Glen Campbell

That's all I can think of right now.

How about Meat Puppets?!!?! (I think they're actually from Tempe or Mesa... but, close enough!!!)

Hey Z, isn't Jazz June from Lancaster? Did you live there?

Anyway, here's me:

Muncy, PA (my hometown) - Lips n' Assholes
Baltimore, MD - Landspeedrecord or Lungfish
Pittsburgh, PA - Modey Lemon probably, although lately I've been getting more into Karl Hendricks Trio. I always wrote him off as generic 90's alternative rock, but some of their stuff is really good.
Houston, TX - Yeah, sure, King's X and Geto Boys I guess, all that new Screwed rap the kids are into, whatever. But the theme here is that Houston music sucks. The John Sparrow are a decent local band, if a little too affected and fashion conscious.

Chad Van Gaalen

He's the featured artist on CMJ right now. I love his music, but I'm especially glad to see him have some success because I hope it'll make people realize that there are some quality artists here in Cowtown.

You can get some mp3s here.

ever: the sonics
now: tough one... I like The A Frames, The Charming Snakes, Kinski, Fruit Bats, The Lights, The Blood Brothers, Crooked Fingers (although i think he's splitting), damien jurado, and a couple of others that are slipping mymind right now. i guess a frames would have to be my favorite current one after looking at the list I just made.

Cuff the Duke is the band I'm going to forward that is a local band about to make waves. They do a gothic alt. counrty thing that is refreshing. Young kids all of them, yet with that wisdom and musicianship way beyond their years. It's as if they've taken many of the local canadian indie influences and infused them into their alt. country ways.

Cuff the Duke is indeed an excellent band. RIYL: The Sadies. So, Bill, this most mean you are from 'Shwa Rawk City ... ?

Montreal. Of all time would probably be Leonard Cohen or maybe Mitsou. Since moving here, it would have to be The Arcade Fire, honestly. But currently I'm extremely excited about Dreamcatcher (new CD/LP called "Nimbus" shortly forthcoming, see www.ohnono.com). Goa! is also presently of interest.
