Has anyone here changed their major midway through?

I'm thinking of doing this and I'd like to hear what some of you, the ones who have done this, feel about it.

If you care...I'm currently a Respiratory Therapy major soon-to-be Secondary Education (English) major.

Aren't you like halfway through, and old by now as well, chris? ;)

I was going to change, decided against it, unless its specialized (like say, respiratory therapy) or will help you get a job that pays actual money (like say, business) then it doesn't really matter. I have a degree in newspaper journalism and count on 1 finger the articles I have written for a newspaper that were not opinion or review type stuff, and work in a completely unrelated field (where I would no sooner talk to a member of the press about what I do than I would sit on a hot stove)

Can I make fun of your soon-to-be old major?

Breathe in...out...in...out...yup, I think you've got it.

On a serious note -- I don't know anyone who hasn't changed their major. At least, no-one interesting.

Apologies to anyone who has not changed their major...and is interesting.

before @ uci: criminology
dropped out

now @ community college: business marketing w/an emphasis in advertising

was shooting for: transfer to get my ba in business marketing. this past semester decided against and now i'm going for transfer with ba in communications. almost done w/aa. so close.

wasted a lot of time deciding what i should do and what not, but i wouldn't have it any other way. no one taught me how to do it, had to learn it all myself... plus with working full-time, it made me decide if i really want to stay in this industry but now i'm more motivated to get my damn degree and get the hell out of this damn company, whatever.. trial & error.

i changed my major from computer science to psychology after it took me two semesters to get through the pre-calc math courses and then failed the first (of like, three) ACTUAL calc course. plus it didn't really help that i would have failed the introductory programming course had i stayed in the class. i realized that psychology was damned interesting and if it weren't for this discovery, i honestly have no idea what else i would have chosen as my major.

What I do for a living has absolutely nothing to do with what I majored in. What a waste of time.

College is a scam.

Yeah, I can get you a great deal on a couple of University of Georgia BA degrees. Real cheap.

Might as well have gone in the service.

Not sure if its a scam. I have heard many people say that what it mainly does is give you time to grow up (yeah right) and shows prospective employers you were able to stick it out and finish. Makes sense to me.

Yiasou, Opa.

I did a major change when I was in university. No regrets, at all.

I went from a Major in Wildlife Biology to a Major in English and a minor in Philosophy.

Currently, I'm a head of English at a high school. Absolutely, love it.

PM me if you have further questions/comment.

Cheers,

audiobill :P :P :P 8)

Well welcome audiobill, you must be new. By your little greeting, can I assume you're Greek? ;)

architecture -> business management -> journalism -> art history -> criminology/criminal justice (because it would take me the least amount of time to graduate given the credits i already had).

don't change majors. Follow your gut instinct.

and teaching sucks your will to do a lot of things like, oh... procreate, be productive in any way, live...

That's the thing...teaching was my first choice but I chose RT since it probably would pay more, etc. I don't know, I'm confused now.

like you need to study english education to teach high school. get the practical degree, fall back on teaching if you want later.

Seconded. Not followed, but seconded. Started out as an English major (creative writing, actually) and jumped ship two years in for studio art. Dumb. I wouldn't have the job I have today, most likely (web designer,) but I'd probably be doing something writing-related, which makes me a lot happier.

Man, nobody knows what they want to be until they're at LEAST 28, sometimes never. Going to college at 18 should be illegal.

You are in a category that houses, at most, half a percent of the population of the US. And you are lucky.

I dropped out of Journalism and into Communications Studies exactly halfway through, and it was a wonderful idea. I left journalism to enjoy free reign in a well-equipped recording studio and free reign with the written word, pontificating on sound production, ambient, minimal and electronic musics, and semiotics. I left journalism and I still give good lead.
