I used to have a 20 gb one, and loved it till it was stolen. Several months later i'm thinking of getting a 60 gb one. I have no idea about the standard/quality of iPod competitors like iRiver and creative, so what do y'all advise, given so many of you are experts in the field of ownership?

* i realise i spelt 'buy' wrong in the title.

I recently posted a similar thread, and although I can't say that the obner opinions swayed me in either direction, I did just buy a 60GB iPod. So far I am very happy with it :)

the only hesitation that i would have is that Apple usually plans their updates to the line to fall around this time of year so any bigger models in terms of capacity might be just around the corner. there've been some rumors already but you never know.

except i need to get it either tomorrow or in twelve days time, because that way i'll be getting it duty free hopefully (i'm flying out of the country, and then back again).

Good thread: Since I too am considering an ipod.

Question: Will the apple ipod only play "apple-approved" mp3s?? or can it play everything??

Your experiences with this question is greatly appreciated.

I've got a 20 Gb model and it can play anything, not just the Apple iTunes store tracks. I think most iPod users would say they've had some problem with the device at one time or another. Mine broke, I sent it back and got a brand new one in return.

I would love a 60 G model in the worst way. Godspeed on your decision.

there's an 80 gigger coming prolly this month. so, i would wait for that to drop and then go scoop up the 'old' 60, which will be about a hundo-pack less than it is now. you have to jump on it pretty quick tho, cause i'm not the only cheap bastard that rocks that move with apple.

I vote no.

I have never forgiven Apple for ClarisWorks, and HyperStudio was a fuck-around too. So, I wouldn't support the Cupertino crime-family, ever.

I think the pertinent question to ask yourself is "Do I have, or, will I own 2,000 good albums I'll want to listen too in the next year and half before this thing is shagged/obsolete".

I'd imagine most people, even fanatical music freaks, don't really need a 60GB I-Pod.

Wait for Apple to reveal the next version of the Ipod sometime this fall. It's sure to be 80gb and there are some hints that it may have video capability (Itunes added video support as of the latest version.)

As for competitors, the Sony unit, can't remember the name but an Obnerite posted something about it not too long ago, looks very interesting. That was only 40gb, however.

His 2600 posts lend this opinion some credibility.

We'll, I've got a 60 GB and it's always full. It holds about half of my collection. Admittedly, there are some songs on there that I don't want but I remove those and add new music as it comes in. Personally, I could probably make use of a larger hard drive. So far, it's been a quality toy and I'd recommend it.

Fanatical music freak who owns 2000 good albums here . . . I NEED a 60gb - no, scratch that, I need at least an 80gb. Maybe I'm not like most people - I don't listen to one album over and over. I change out what's on my 40gb Ipod seemingly every month or so because it gets full and I just can't decided what to delete, so I Restore it and start fresh. I want as much of my collection with me at all times, plain and simple.

i have a 20gig rio & find 20gig very limiting. i'm hoping there's an affordable 200gig player in 1.5 yrs (when i plan on buying a new one). i -heart- variety.

I agree. Bring the 80. You never know who around you is going to want to listen to Godley & Creme and then follow it up with "99 Problems." Is the 80 really happening, or is it speculation at this point?

There are confirmations an 80gig is coming out soon?? I never heard this, but I honestly don't keep up on Apple news.

Though I have had a problem or two with mine, I still own and look forward to turning on my 10gb iPod daily. 10gb is a joke in size, but I won't replace it till she crunks out. I'd buy the 60 for sure.

From what I've seen, it's "dependable speculation." Apple was reported to have made a deal with . . . Toshiba, I think? . . . for a huge amount of their tiny 80gb hard drives. I feel pretty confident that we're going to see at least a 20gb increase in the biggest Ipod this Christmas season. Apple's got to have something big to release for the season, and I think video is only part of the enticement they plan to offer. (I still don't get why anyone would want to watch video on a 1.25" screen, but whatever . . . )
