My sister got a mac. (Boo, Hiss)
She has an iPod mini.

She needs software to rip her cd's. Recommendations?

She also hates iTunes because she can't get her music off the iPod. Can you recommend some software that does this for a mac? Does it require formatting the iPod and starting fresh?

Thanks.

no, i have mine formatted for windows (so it works on both os x and windows) and it works fine. to rip the music, you can use ipodrip, which, although not free, offers a free trial. if you want something free, you can use senuti. for cd ripping, i recommend lamebrain, a basic front end for lame, widely accepted as the best mp3 encoder there is.

podworks is the program i use/endorse to get songs from any ipod onto my mac laptop. it's like $8 but it's worth it if you've ever tried to use sucky freeware programs. hell, $8 is cheaper than the first album i "backed up" on my computer.

I know you can get files off the ipod, but the ipod does a job of renaming the files, and shortening them. I have also noticed it sometimes gives it a license plate type coding.

i would recommend it if not for the fact that it doesnt have an os x port. as soon as i learn to program, thats on my list of things to port, along with xmms and a java direct connect client.

Can you really do that? Format for Windows and it runs under OSX too? I had no idea.

yup. it formats to fat32, which all versions of windows, os x and pre os x, linux and unix can read just fine.

That looks pretty god. Does it keep the correct file names or does it use the ones the iPod assign it?
