Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me.

I didn't know who Tom Waits was until I was 18. That's when I found out he wasn't the dude from Celtic Frost.

Go polka.

Well, you weren't born for another five years, which would have made you a pretty determined pre-soul, I guess.

Yep.

Well anyways, on a serious note, whenever I get into a conversation about Tom Waits with someone older (meaning my dads age) they tell me i'm too young to listen to him. It's kind of annoying, but I guess teenagers are just supposed to listen to bad music or a certain type of music and that's how it is. Everyone just thinks you like Green Day or Destinys Child or something.

That's okay, polka, I was listening to Kate Bush and Leonard Cohen when I was your age and older relatives thought I couldn't possibly "understand or appreciate" them.

So I got two copies of Kilroy Was Here for Christmas.

Feh, I said. And am still saying it.

Who says that Tom Waits is better than Green Day? Just because he's got "indie cred" and doesn't get played on MTV three hours a day doesn't make Tom Waits listeners any more smarter or more elite than Green Day listeners.

That's one thing that bugs the shit out of me about music listeners in general.

No, it's just typically what people listen to at our age. I think Tom Waits is better, personally, obviously.. and do you think middle aged men care about "indie cred"?? do you think I care about "indie cred" Christian? We've been friends for quite some time now and I think you'd know enough about me to know that's not important to me. No, I know a lot of people, if you sat them down and made them listen to both artists they'd choose Green Day over Tom Waits, because people hold different opinions. But I was merely commenting on what 45 year old men had to say about me listening to Tom Waits. Not "ooh give me some INDIE CRED because I listen to Tom Waits and not Green Day"

I forgot i'm such an indie elitist. I have ulterior motives to everything I do, especially when it comes to listening to music because I only listen to music that makes me KEWL.

it's more of a "What's popular != what's personally interesting" comparrison.

You play Green Day's Dookie for a bunch of people and then play anything by Waits, what the hell do you think they'll pick? Most people would choose Green Day over Waits because the former have written some upbeat, dumb and catchy tunes, while the latter has an annoying voice with some pretentious, maudlin' songs.

Are we really going to sit here and compare Green Day and Tom Waits?
It's not fair in the first place, and really I was just using Green Day as an example because they're popular in general and really popular with people my age.

Tom Waits has plenty of good songs and albums, but there are several times where he tries WAY TOO HARD to make his voice sound that way, and at times it can almost be funny to listen to how it comes out.

Green Day has plenty of great tunes and other than Dookie, which is way too catchy and upbeat, have several good albums.

Yes, we're comparing them.

Tom Waits is beautiful and brilliant. How many times have we had this sort of discussion? And you know it's an unfair comparison.

You brought it up, but honestly so what if people your age listen to Green Day or whatever the fuck. Let them listen to whatever makes them happy. If that's Green Day great, if god forbid, it's Tom Waits or whoever, super.

But to your earlier post, why the fuck would Tom Waits be "obviously" better than Green Day? Because he's some grizzled old guy which automatically grants him wisdom through song, which passes on to you the listener?

Tom Waits is better to me, "obviously"... I didn't say that was everyones opinion. Yeah I brought it up but I didn't think i'd get some drawn out discussion about it. I was just using Green Day as an example. It could have been Yellowcard or Simple Plan. They're pretty popular. Fall Out Boy? My Chemical Romance? Blink 182? Want me to keep naming bands? Can you defend all of those bands? Would you say you like those bands better than Tom Waits? Why aren't we discussing why Destiny's Child is better than Tom Waits? If Green Day is a fair comparison why can't we compare "Jockey Full Of Bourbon" to "Bootylicious"??
Tom Waits hasn't always been "some grizzled old guy" in fact he put out one of my favorite albums in 1974, The Heart Of Saturday Night. He was what, almost 30 then? I'd say that's pretty young. He's a good storyteller, I like his voice, his style of music.
Yeah, when did I say people can't listen to what makes them happy? That's exactly what i'm doing with listening to Tom Waits so why don't you shut the fuck up with that side of the argument.
